PokeRogue is a unique rogue-lite experience set in the Pokemon universe. Unlike traditional Pokemon games, PokeRogue features procedurally generated worlds, meaning the map and encounters change with every playthrough. This injects a hefty dose of strategy and replayability, forcing you to adapt to ever-changing situations. Additionally, while it doesn't have permadeath like some Roguelike, PokeRogue offers a challenging experience that requires careful planning and resource management.
The Let's Try series is a way to preview / review games in order to get my first impressions through the first moments of gameplay.

that meowscarada had something against reto.
Good job on reto keeping it PG during that fight, lol. I was throwing around expletives watching that fight.
I think the rival keeps items from previous fights, too so floor 195 is going to be liiiiit
that's a nice pair of legendary items you have there...... it would be a shame... if someone... would dance a plant in front of it.
He had an answer to magician meowscarada and stayed in anyway.
"It's hard to raise the happiness stat.. just like in real life 👀" I'm dead lmao
Right now passive like Magician or Pickup always stole one item, except if the item cannot be stolen or you have max stack of it. For covet, it is only 30%. So, maybe next run, you can try Pokemon with passive like Pickup or Magician, it really fun to steal item from an opponent lol.
That Rayquaza was playing XCOM, man
The whole "stealing your items" thing doesn't even necessarily need to be changed entirely, just adjusted to not be permanent. Like, just have it steal them for the battle. I think that'd be a fine compromise between getting rid of the mechanic entirely and the bullshit it currently is.
100% if you got it back at the end of the fight I'd say who cares, it is fun then. Adds an interesting counterplay interaction but doesn't tank a run where you lose every legendary item because they happened to have Covet.
I agree, it is very demoralizing to have your stuff stolen like that, but on the flip side. I think stuff the player steals should also not be permanent if this gets implemented. It's only fair for the change to work both ways.
Yea its tough considering you could just literally have a hot seat pokemon and abilities to just stack items like crazy, especially since you can see whats on every pokemon
@@inukami8963
Yeah I mean this is 100% how I’d handle it.
No item stealing should be permanent- or, alternatively, items stolen from wild pokemon could be permanent but any items involving trainers should not. Logically speaking, if I fought you as a trainer, I’d return your stolen items after the fight. I’d expect you to do the same.
A wild Pokémon I wouldn’t return their items to, but, after I caused them to faint, I’d take MY items back for sure.
It’s one of those things where, even if it isn’t entirely fair, it’s a mechanic that fairness shouldn’t be considered.
It’s sorta like how the poison mechanic in Roguelike card battlers should be lopsided in favor of the player. It doesn’t feel fun if you get poisoned and take damage before your turn even if that’s how it works against the opponents. Fairness and symmetry don’t matter if it’s a PvE game.
Man, that Huntail at the end of the beach threw so hard. Misty must be pretty, _puts on sunglasses,_ salty.
Ah the multi lens, easily one of the best items in the game, but for endless and not so much for classic even though it's still decent depending on the pokem.
It's a ridiculous item because it also works with multi hit moves.
The way the Multi lens work is that for each hit a move does that lens will add an extra hit depending on how many you have stacked (caped at 3)
So at max stacked multi lens (3) a single hit move will hit a total of 4 times.
A 5 hit move can reach 20 hits
And Population Bomb goes from a 10 hit move to a 40 hit move.
Now combine this with items like the King's rock, the grip claw and the shell bell, and things can get prety silly.
Or even combine it with moves like Charge beam or Ancient Power, each hit will have a seperate chance to proc it's secondary effect.
I put it on my Typhlosion with Flamethrower, Flame Charge and Roll Out. It was fantastic.
Flamethrower with 2 chances to burn.
Flame charge giving +2 speed in 1 turn.
Roll out getting 2 uses made it scale twice as quick.
multi lens is outright awful in classic mode due to the scarcity of items, furthermore without a max stack of 3 king's rocks I wouldn't even consider taking it before floor 1000 in endless mode, as it is strictly a damage downgrade (takes you from 100% damage to 80% damage for the first one, and gets worse from there), yes it is broken with the correct setups, but it's certainly not in classic mode that you can achieve this
@@darklink2300 I wouldn't call it outright awfull in classic, it depends on the situation and the pokemon. That being said, yes you're right the multi lens is more so better for endless than to classic, but i personaly would still take it as soon as i can get it regardless of having king's rock or not. Although most of the time you will have the king's rock since it's easier to find.
I guess in hindsight i should've probably mentioned endless mode, but i guess i wanted to avoid spoilers so i didn't, but oh well, i edited my original comment to reflect that it's more of an endless mode item than classic mode.
That’s some insane paralyze luck man 😂
"In this game, it's hard to raise the happiness level - just like in real life"
this hit harder than expected :')
I don't think it's possible to steal the vitamin supplement items, so Meowscarada was guaranteed to steal the leftovers once the leppa berry was gone. RIP.
You may never be in this situation again, but Pokémon cannot be frozen in harsh sunlight. That Lumineon never had a chance to be frozen.
ANOTHER THING to note: If you get past that Big Rival Battle....Waves 180-190 will probably REALLY challenge you AFTER that Rival Battle. The Rayquazas I kept fighting against were SHINY RAYQUAZAS, what the giant hell game. But yeah, there will be some challenging ones at roughly wave 145 and beyond.
I cant wait for the start of run 2. You have so many decent options for starters at this point
RIP TATSUGIRI WE WILL MISS YOUUUUU ;-;
Reto sounds like a mad scientist when surprised by evil rng.
KEEP UP THE SERIES PLEASE THESE ARE SO GOOD
Luck of the gods on that rayquaza fight man, that was awesome!
Excited and wanting more. I look forward to it. Love your commentary on the pokemon. Hope you are enjoying it Reto!
I also just been playing this game! I had a sucky couple runs but then the third run was popping off at the mo (only on like wave 75 but we'll get there!).
Amazing vid Retro :D
Y'all got any of them "let's trys" in stock?
That aside, the series content is great and I'm glad to see reto trying to do more of what he really likes. ♡
I'm waiting for something to impress me! The lack of Let's Try videos is because most things that I've tried have ended up really weak unfortunately. Hopefully something worth showing off will slide across my desk soon!
@Retromation totally fair! Better to cover games you enjoy than to pump out content you're not satisfied with. You do you - your fans craving new games will be patient and respectful, waiting for some devs to pop out some bangers. 🙏♥️♥️♥️
@@RetromationI might be late for the party or lack thereof, but do you take suggestions? Here, at the discord?
@@Retromation Abiotic Factor just hit EA...
The map is an amazing item to pickup. You've just gotten yourself on a one way road with a chance to encounter another area option that you failed the dice roll on everytime. Unlucky to not have gotten any use of it yet.
Item stealing definitely needs to be changed.
I understand it currently works symmetrically, but this is one of those, “Poison better affect the enemy before their turn starts BUT only affect me at the end of my turns” type mechanic where fairness is irrelevant.
There’s a few ways I’d change it. Either make it so stealing items is completely temporary (not my favorite solution but probably more simple) or, preferably, items stolen in either direction against a trainer are returned. Items you steal from wild Pokémon should be retained. Items a wild Pokémon steals from you are given back.
From a gameplay and “lorewise” perspective, this makes sense to me.
If I’m battling you as a trainer, I would give you all of your items back after the battle and I’d expect you to do the same.
Against a wild Pokémon, I wouldn’t give back an item. Once I KO the Pokémon, I would definitely take back my items, however.
It just doesn’t feel fun that something can just take away all of your items like that, especially when not all items are made equal.
Yes, more Pokerogue! You're going absolutely crazy on what is practically a first run.
Keep it comin Reto!
Can't wait for tomorrow's episode. I'd love to see another run after this one.
The more shiny pokemon in your party the higher the rate of items upgrading after a battle so its a way of meta progression because more upgrades=easier runs/more items
Some slightly obscure Pokémon knowledge for you. Rock type Pokémon get a free special defense boost during sandstorm
Can't believe I just binged six hours of watching you play this.
So I know you are normally ahead on videos, but my shift/c was working when I was playing today, so hopefully it’ll work for you soon!
Wooooh another one, im hooked
Loving this series!
good vid! keep the series
Love this series
Multi lens work as is written with teh increasing power reduction because you have to factor each lens also increases the hit counter
(100% -> 40%*2 (80) -> 25*3 (75) -> 17.5*4(70))
While it's true you lose damage, abilities that increase your stats or can apply conditions to the target are procced PER HIT (ice fang 20% flinch and 20% freeze rolling 4 times is usually a free win on a fast mon)
Been looking forward to this
I played this yesterday. Thought i was having a god run. Then i got to level 95. Got a Rival battle. And she killed me with 2 of her 5 pokemon. Veluza and snorlax
❤❤❤ also I like retries! A limit could be fun but I'm sure you'd make the right call. If it's a fun run no reason to cut it short!
The wording of Multi Lense is accurate. It's a reduction by that percentage with each extra hit. But the trade off is things like Covet, that also have an additional effect could proc again if it didnt the first time.
seems like the way Sturdy works in this game is that the pokemon wont faint from taking attack damage the turn it is triggered, so unfortunately multi hit attacks don't break through it, or at least that's how it seemed to work with the multihit item when I was using it.
Amazing series! I hope you keep it going for a little while ^^
I finally got to play this and omg its so good
well now you have to let me know your first starters!
@@Retromation I went all OG. Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur
i think that golem was shiny. i even looked online and the color matches up.... if it was ouch thats a rough miss.
btw i enjoy your content "Retromation" keep it coming and dont stop being awesome!!
I feel like more people would be shouting at me if it was. If so ah well!
Knock off should probably only make you lose a single item for that battle. Holy.
It’s nuts that you’re pretty bright and a critical thinker and can’t figure out that you get full hp / heals / status effect clear / full revives and so on every 10 levels.
Also, I found this because of you and jumped from both playing and watching slice and dice to being hooked on this. I can’t remember if I got to 150 or where I was, I don’t remember the Ivy fight I don’t think at 145, but yeah. I also got fairly far around the amount of runs you’ve put up. I honestly felt relieved failing to do more runs and not lose replay value early. I feel like after the first Roguelike/lite win the desire to push takes a hit.
Keep ‘em up.
Also idk if you figured it out yet but the multi lens probably means you get a 3rd and 4th attack and THOSE are weaker as you have more. At least that’s what I assume it’d mean.
If you do another run, mudkip is a baller, he just gets so much coverage early, but as always, keep it away from any pointy leaves
I stopped really liking pokemon after gen 2, but this is so concise and streamlined, Im highly tempted to dig in and get caught up to see every Pokemon once and for all.
It's so good
Would love to see an endless run after this one!!
I have negative interest in endless mode
Hey Reto I've been playing Pokerogue for quite awhile now and stream on my Xbox on twitch but have wanted to stream Pokerogue really badly, is there anyway I can do it from my phone and have the stream video be in full screen and not see the website URL?
Yeah, the reduction does make sense. You would think 50% reduction to gain another attack would be fair, but it's more than 50% since it's more valuable in a game with those armors blocking single attacks.
Awww the leftovers… 🍎 o7 🍎
Retro, have you seen the new Endgame of Devil update yet? It added another new mode.
As for the map I am not sure if there are times where you don't get a choice or most likely I think I click to many times and accidentally choose the top choice. That may be what happened to you the 2 times. Mine usually coincide with eggs hatching and the last egg to hatch doesn't go away as quickly. So I have clicked before the choice came up and it took that as my choice.
As im taking a dab "69 hp blaze it!" 😂
I am deep in run like you hopefully we both beat it
Lets gooo god i wish this game had an offline mode
Agree. But in the good side, we can play this on both pc, mobile and console
You can find something online that lets you download everything and run the server yourself so you can play it offline and mod it etc
i don`t understand why it stopped working on my pc. it worked once then nevermore, ive been playing on my phone tho. =D
Great run btw, mine furthest was until 141 when i got countered by an area where the pokemons were strong against all my team... i got kinda lucky tho, that i got to run the same 4 areas that i was good against pretty much all the run because i got the map at the begining.
You should have caught that charizard it woud have added more to charmanders stats next time
I just got lit up by Surge
I also got to this part and unfortunately Rayquaza is too strong for me, there's no way I can get past it like the Pokémon I have
you can see the level cap in the top right corner btw
ah nevermind I think I'm wrong
I first tried classique mode and am now on a endless one(wave 680)
Watching you play classique make me realize I like classique WAY MORE than endless
Waaaay less bul**hit(yes, even getting all of your item stolen is pretty mild)
Can you not catch bosses?
Why does percentage go up when stacks go up ? Because you attack twice, three or four times
I just assumed there was no way it was that busted, but I guess it is indeed just that busted
I might have missed something, but is it a attack reduction BY X%, atk*(1-X), or is it a reduction TO X%, atk*X? More hits on moves balanced for fewer hits seems to be worth the subtractive reduction if it is the case
@@hugofontes5708 one stack is two attacks total for effectively 120% total
There's also the bonus of avoiding protect, and sturdy , extra flinch chances etc
@@robs1509 so it's atk*X, it really buffs the more you get, wth
I find it funny that retro keeps getting things I have never gotten or 1 or 2 times while having already done 6 successful classic runs (still haven't gotten leftovers or a gmaxed pokemon)
Absolutely blazed at 69 hp
You should have caught the boss charizard so that your starting charmander would get better stats
Eh, don't plan on using Charmander again, there are so many Pokémon I can't imagine a situation where I'd want to use the same ones for another 6-7hrs
@Retromation well keep an eye out for Pokerus (the purple box) as it spreads and is an exp bonus for when you do your next run
It’s probably a good thing those leftovers were taken like that...because a certain final boss would’ve also taken them...
My god, the old forgotten info from two whole arcs back returning at the final fight of the anime to save the protag's butt, this series is truly epic
Magicarp is a bully
This game is fun because the AI makes intelligent moves a lot of the time!
Yeah, I feel like there are normal trainers that make normal Pokemon type moves and the skilled trainers like the Rival who play almost like a User (comparatively)
@@davidmcculloch7709 Rival is still bad but leagues ahead of official Pokemon ai lmao.
@@ninototo1the rival is objectively smarter than the non competitive/pvp pokemon players (on average)
@@someone7678amogus
duh theyre little kids
that item stealing im not playing this i cant handle that
You just can’t get good eggs man😢
I hate that fight cause I had a perfect run and everyone was maxed leveled with decent IVs but not a single Paralysis went off. He used Outrage spam and 1 shot every single Pokemon and his confused never went off on him either.
I strongly dislike this game rn lol
Leaf blade isn’t falling behind, you got rid of its booster(Coil) when you taught Leaf Storm. I’d say relearn Coil over top of either Leaf Storm or Toxic
use the gacha tickets!
That wasn’t the rival fight you were warned about - that’s the 200 rival fight. Get ready to get wiped lol
nope, I was warned about this rival fight. I was specifically warned about the shiny rayquaza. I am sure the other is bad too, but this was the thing the most people told me to be afraid of.
@@Retromation that fight was a fraction of the difficulty of the 200 fight - that fight is insanely hard
I'd assume so, it is the last one. This one is at a more random time, and thus more worthy of a heads up!
@@Retromation on a side note I’m really enjoying this series
The 145 rival is absolutely an early run killer before you get some better starters. Reto just has a pretty good team and got insanely lucky with those paralysis. The fight would have been a lot closer otherwise.
I don't like this game.
Nah who am I kidding I love this game. I recently managed to beat level 200 using a Tera Orb and a fusion using one very particular bug pokemon. Last time I got there I got WIPED.
