This performance is amazing, but it's true it feels a little bit restrained. Check out some of his concert performances, there are quite many of them on youtube, I can recommend some if you are interested. I feel like Taemin gives his most when he performs in front of his fans 💙
I agree. Taemin gives his all in front of a live audience. I honestly feel frustrated with the camerawork. The camerawork did not do much justice to taemin's talent. It did not highlight key points in his dance.
Yes, I agree. I love watching everything Taemin is in, but I really dislike the camerawork for MNET in general and this MAMA performance in particular. It is clear MNET was enamored with their CGI effects and wanted to show them off instead of Taemin, because that's the only reason why I can imagine they would zoom out so much that Taemin and his dancers are barely ants on the screen.
I also agree that he feels restrained in this performance. He is at his best in front of a live audience, but even some of his other covid-era performances with no live audience were better than this one, the KBS Song Festival performance of Criminal + Idea being one of them. I would have recommended that over this video, tbh. Despite the interesting choreography and that beautiful outfit (and brilliant Taemin of course), I don't really like this video that much. I think there were a few factors making this MAMA performance more challenging and less enjoyable for him, which may have affected his performance, including the fact that the venue they were being filmed was extremely dusty (due to construction) which probably made it harder to breathe while dancing and singing, and that there were no dedicated locations inside the building for the performers to wait before their pre-recording, so performers had to wait outside in their cars. (And then even the day of the live show, idols had to wait outside while actors had dedicated green rooms to wait in.... but I guess we can't be too surprised since it's MAMA we're talking about -_-)
@@justshairal7178 It not only didn't highlight key points of his dance, I think the camerawork actively detracted from his dancing by choosing to zoom all the way out into space right at those key moments. 😂

If you’d love to see some interpretative dance from Taemin you should see Just Me And You - it’s a VCR from his BeyondLive concert. As for his performances I really recommend MAMA 2016 and Famous from Xtm Arena Tour. Also I love his performance of Drip Drop with Seulgi, which they did in Tokyo in 2019 and basically just watch any of his solo concerts - these shows are just on another level!
The VCR for Just Me and You is one of my all time favorite pieces he’s ever done but I’ve heard that you never see reactions for it because it’s one of those quickly yanked down due to copyright issues. So I’d love to see it but it must be gone into carefully!

My all time favorite MAMA performances of TAEMIN are definitely his legendary trilogy stage from 2016 and MOVE and Gashina collab stages from 2017. I think in this performance (specifically during IDEA) his outfit and the dirty floor made him restrain his movements. Taemin clearly looks uncomfortable. But nevertheless, he really slayed the stage. I love the Criminal rendition and dance break in this a lot.
Taemins natural hair colour is black. The is the best isn't he's like a siren once you fall for taemin or shinee for that matter your there for life. There's not exit from Taemin an shinee

I can't choose my Shinee or Taemin favorite life performance. It's too many of them. And this performance is not even my favorite list.
I am always mesmerized when I watch Taemin and this performance is beautiful. Can you imagine being in the audience and Taemin is the opening act? I love his medleys like this. The 100-second performance is fun too. Have you seen Taemin's Just Me and You (contemporary)? He and SHINee sing live quite often and I am here for it. I love their use of the backing track, so cool to be able to harmonize with your own voice, etc. I hear that Taemin's MAMA 2016 performance is super so I'm going to check that out now. Thanks for the inspiration and thanks for your cool video!

Because of the pandemic, MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) 2020 was a live recorded event without an audience. So, Taemin's stage I think was filmed live at the Dream Maker venue -- which is the same place that SM holds all their Byond Live virtual concerts -- and then aired the night of the awards show. For Beyond Live concerts they are live concerts that are streamed to fans who purchase "ticket" access to the live stream and the CGI elements in the concert are projected live in real time during the concert. If you search the Dream Maker TH-cam channel you can find really interesting behind the scenes looks at all of the Beyond LIve concerts from various SM groups, as well as other companies who have partnered with SM and used the same platform to hold concerts during the pandemic.
What Taemin says in the beginning of the performance is "Destroy me more". The whole storyline for "Criminal" is supposed to be slightly creepy, as well as sexy. He is literally being abused and asking you to please "destroy me more." So, what you see in the MV is the fact that he is supposed to be held captive by his lover who is the criminal he is singing about in the song. That is why at the beginning you see his wrists are tied up. As part of the story, he has been held captive for so long that he is now suffering from stockholm syndrome, so he is no longer fighting the abuse and that is why you see him throw his bindings away. The criminal (which is a metaphor for the pressure he has felt in his career) no longer has to tie him up to keep him there. (Because he has fallen in love with the pain and suffering he inflicts on himself as a artist, etc.) The backup dancers represent the forces he is struggling against as he fights with his mind over whether to stay or go, etc.
Yes, in "Idea" BoA is saying "Killing Me ... Killing me softly." These lines were originally supposed to be sung by Taemin, but he didn't think they had the right impact or message when he said them, so he asked BoA to feature on the song.
Taemin pronounces Idea the way you hear him saying it in the song because he is pronouncing it like the Greek word idéa, and not like the English pronunciation. The song is based on the Greek philosopher Plato’s theory of Ideas. Plato believed that an "Idea" is an ultimate reality. Every form has an idea, an image, or standard set for it and Plato believed that these ideas were eternal. For example, when talking about a human, everyone has an image, an ideal type of human according to Plato and once defined that description or thought is constant and never changing.
In the song Teamin is disagreeing with Plato's theory and he is saying that the world is not ruled by one ultimate definition of something or that there isn't only one voice. Taemin is saying he has many voices and thoughts influencing him. If he were to conform to only one way of doing something -- i.e., if he listened to everyone who told him there was only one way to be a Kpop Idol and he needed to do everything the traditional cookiecutter way -- then that would be like killing his spirit and everything that makes him who he is. Hence BoA's lines in the song that say "Killing me softly."
You definitely need to watch his "Criminal" and "Idea" MVs with the CC English subs on so you can see what the songs are about. The whole song and MV will make a lot more sense if you know what the lyrics are.

Yes, Taemin will always sing live in live performances. The ONLY thing SHINee is not good at is lip syncing, so they have specifically trained since their debut, to build stamina and endurance, in order to be able to sing live for hours straight and always sound flawless while performing these intense choreographies. It may be shocking because they sound so flawless even though they are dancing so intensely, but that is why they are such legends and why they are so highly respected in the industry.
SHINee are referred to as CDINee or CD-eaters, because they sound even better live then they do in their studio recordings. It is a running joke between fans and the members that you can tell when SHINee are lip syncing because they are so bad at it, that is why they avoid it at all costs. So when you hear SHINee sing, 95% of the time it will be live. (If you ask any of the members, what is something you are not good at? One of the very first things they will say is, "I am horrible at lip syncing." -- I have heard the members say this multiple times with my own ears.)
Yes, over the years they have become better at lip syncing then they used to be, but now they have gained the reputation as the group that always sings live, so unless they are required to lip sync for a specific reason, what you will hear is live vocals.
Other Idols and audio sound technicians, etc. who have witnessed SHINee performing live are always blown away, because in the parts of the song where most singers would take a break and rely on the backing track vocals to cover their voices so they can catch their breath and recover, this is where the SHINee members actually ramp it up and become their most powerful.
I guarantee, that if you were to listen to them singing a cappella while performing some of their most intense choreographies, they would sound just as flawless. That is why, even as rookies, senior artists would stop what they were doing to watch SHINee's rehearsals on music programs because SHINee's vocal talent is that impressive.
When SHINee debuted they were the first group to demonstrate how it was possible to sing live while performing intense choreography and still maintain stable vocals. Before SHINee, the thought within the industry was that it wasn't possible to sing live and also perform high intensity choreography at the same time. At that time, most groups would either sing live and have simple choreography, or they would have crazy cool choreography but lip sync to their recorded vocals. SHINee was the group that changed the industry and proved that if you wanted to compete you needed to up your game.
SHINee live is unmatched and it's literally referred to as the SHINee standard. It's the standard that all other groups strive to reach and SHINee are the vocalists that all other artists try to emulate.

He was included in the MAMA last minute, and they had to wait in a parking lot forever. it looks amazing but It is not a particularly good Taemin performance dancewise.

This MAMA performance isn't a favorite of mine due to poor camerawork and challenging working conditions, which means Taemin isn't really showing his best here. I'd recommend watching these SHINee and Taemin live performances instead:
SHINee - Excuse Me Miss (th-cam.com/video/jSORaqTQykk/w-d-xo.html): This is the classic first recommendation for a live SHINee performance, with R&B swagger, mirrored dances, and all the members looking sharp in white.
SHINee - Picasso (DxDxD) (th-cam.com/video/kaKRY4z1C1A/w-d-xo.html): You can see how much they feed off of audience energy here; when watching this keep in mind that this is one of their last songs in their 3-hour-long DxDxD concert.
SHINee - Spoiler (SWIII Seoul) (th-cam.com/video/Luih8XrAldI/w-d-xo.html): This performance is explosive from start to finish. The song was written by Jonghyun and is called "Spoiler" because the lyrics contain the titles for all their other tracks from the same album. This particular video I linked is sadly of only 480p quality, so if you can find a better version I'd highly recommend using that instead.

Talk about a coincidence. =0} I liked this. He looked great. It was my 1st watch too. Love his voice. Jimin still ult but I am a new Taemin bias. =0p It was an interesting medley.
