  • Back in the field today to buck more logs. Let's compare the difference between the STIHL ms261 and the ms462 Chainsaws cutting through Maple. I brought my Kubota LX2610 compact tractor and HLA Attachments Grapple to stack the rounds for splitting later. Cheers!

    7:40 Gord, you knew that already about not sawing to the ground, but good discussion for those who need it. On that note tho, it is good to be aware of any dirt/rocks that get caught in teh bark. When I finish the cut I have the bottom of the log facing me or facing downward rather than facing straight up. That way any dirt that has accumulated on the bottom of the lot gets pulled off (hopefully) before mixing with the chain. There may still be some dirt/rock hit by the chain, but this helps minimize any dirt/rocks mixing with the chain and causing any damage and hopefully extending the life of your chain. Good luck.

      LOL! Yes indeed I did David, and that was why I showed it and mentioned it. Good point about the rocks - I look first and decide based on what I see. Great tip though! Cheers - enjoy your weekend!

    I like to start with my 462 but generally end up finishing with a 50cc saw the lighter weight can make a big difference.

    Great video Gord, that 462 is a brute and a sawing machine. Didn't look like the 261 was throwing chips, more of a dust? It's a great saw too but has to be sharp all the time. You have some beautiful weather up there right now, won't be too long till you need to switch closets to the layered clothes getting closer each day;-) Stay safe up there and keep up the great videos. Fred.

      Hi Fred! Yes, I noticed a bit but lots of chips too - however a few others suggested it as well - I stopped by the saw shop today and got new files for the 261 - will re- sharpen and try again this weekend - I'll let you know how it goes for sure. Cheers my friend!

    Nice job, GP. Its nice having a couple different saws to work with. That MS261 is a great limbing/small log bucking saw. The MS462 is a beast. Very similar to what we do. We use MS180 or Husky 55 for limbing/small bucking. Then MS461 for the big logs.
    Have a great day.

    Hi GP, I think that your MS261 is slower because it is not sharped not beauce the motor is smaller. On your video, I can see the chips size is much bigger with your MS462. But I can be wrong.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good day Denis. I did sharpen it but did notice a bit of dust, too. The cutters are smaller on the 261 than on the 462. Cheers and all the best!

    You are getting it figured out!👍
    I saw your comments on getting some new small files and they should help on the 261. Even though...it was the best it has cut in awhile now.😃 Keep at it and you will see how rewarding sharpening your own chains can be and you will get faster at it also...Have a great weekend!

    I totally agree with you about rolling the log and not cutting all the way to the ground. I think you proved it in this video. When the 261 started out you could see the chips, but by the 9:25 mark it looked more like dust (or at least much smaller chips). As you know, it doesn't take much to dull a chain! 😁👨‍🚒

    GP. I have the same two saws and I just sent the 261 off to be ported with muffler mod. I hardly ever pick up the 261 just because it is so slow compared to the 462. Hoping the ported 261 gets more used upon its return. I definitely like the weight of the 261 compared to the 462. Stand up and buck with the 462. No need to be bending over. Cut with the front half of the saw. Nice video.

    Good fun comparing the house cat to the jaguar GP !! LOL Lots of times I'll cut 3/4 or more through on the whole log, then roll the whole log with a cant hook before up-cutting the remaining portion. By cutting up from the bottom, a lot of time the vibrations created by the chain passing through will dislodge and bounce away small grit and grime that may be imbedded in the bark from the ground, minimizing contact with the chain. For the few that you have to, the top cut option is always available. Of course as always, that's only my opinion. Stay safe, stay cool my friend.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Morning T! Excellent advice my friend - several others have suggested the same thing. And it makes good sense, however, I am finding that sometimes it is better to cut down instead of up from under, when i can see the curf is slightly compressed (no flat ground around here !! LOL). Have a great day and thanks as always mon ami!

    You can change the drive sprocket on the 261 to a 3/8 drive and then you can run the same 3/8 chain size as the 462. That way you would use the same size file on both saws.

  • @JelenOutDoors
    @JelenOutDoors 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    GP, the 22 more cc's in the 261 sure makes a difference. Music to my ears. I wasn't sure or not when you noted chisel chain if you meant full chisel or semi chisel. Full chisel will cut faster but will dull quicker than a semi chisel chain. Semi chisel cutter have a rounded shoulder / side plate while the full is more flat/square. Anyway I suspect your pro saws came with full chisel chains. If you ever get a chance try a full and semi skip tooth chain. Have a great weekend.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi JO - it is a full chisel. Does the semi skip chain cut better?

    • @JelenOutDoors
      @JelenOutDoors 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GPOutdoors Skip is used with longer bars, less cutters equals less friction and less friction is easier on the saw and that keeps the rpm's up and the engine cooler. Does a skip chain cut better, well it's not a matter of better but rather different since the skip chain arrangement is ideal for wider wood and not so good for small stuff. Your full comp will be smoother and quicker with slightly smaller chips while a skip will will disburse debris easier but you'll feel more vibration. You need to experience it since words don't really describe it that well.

    I went the same route with the Stihl 261 first then a 462 for the same reasons. Love my Stihl saws! The 261 is perfect for the smaller stuff, light and nimble even with a light weight 25 inch bar. If you really need to get some work done the 462 comes out. A pound or two doesn’t sound like much of a weight difference but tell me what you think after a few hours.

    Hi Gord, have you had any issues with starting the ms261 cm when it is already warmed up. I just picked one up and it doesn't seem to like to start after it is warmed up. I assume I have to to the carb reset process but was wondering your experience. Thanks for another entertaining and informative video.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Morning Mainer. Yes, but my fault. Here is what I have found - after it is warmed and I use it for a while, turn it off then use it within about 5 minutes or so, i just depress the decompression button and pull the rope and it starts right away. If I leave it longer I find I have to cold start it - decompression button and push the run button to the cold start position and then pull. Sometimes I leave it too long and then try to just push the decompression button and pull...and keep pulling and then smell gas ( flooded). LOL. Then I leave it for a bit and then try starting until it starts So, over time I learned if I leave it longer than about 5 mins, I have to cold start it again. Also, if you find that when you first start it for the day, it takes 8-10 pulls, that is normal for a version 3 saw ( 3rd generation), It is because of the M -Tronic. If you are not sure what version you have , look at the serial number sticker on your handle, you will see in the bottom right hand corner of the sticker, "M3.0", or "M2.0" for a version 2 etc. Hope this helps!
