Guns of Navarone - Greek Folk Song

  • This is in memory of a charming old man who used to live in my street; he was a French speaker, but was from one of those exotic French islands somewhere like the Indian Ocean, and in his heavily accented English he would always say to me, "Greece, beautiful music ! Beautiful music ! Guns of Navarone, beautiful singing !". He would then hum this tune to me, and always asked me if I could get it for him. Well it was in the days before Internet, so it took me a couple of years, but I eventually found this song on a Greek Folk Songs CD, and it was just wonderful to see the delighted expression on his face when I presented it to him !

(But my girlfriend is from Dalian !) Wish I'd met that worthy gentleman- I speak fluent French and even better German (with an Austrian accent !). I've visited on Rhodes the sites where Guns of Navarone was filmed, and for 13 years, I had a house in Greek Cyprus - and I speak pretty good Greek too !. Guns of Navarone, together with Where Eagles Dare, will always be my two favourite war movies ! (But I haven't seen yet the sites in Austria where Eagles was filmed, though I lived there !). The café scene - obviously filmed on Rhodes (Anthony Quinn loved the island so much he bought a house there !) - reminds me very much of the cafes I knew both there, and on Cyprus ! Στην υγειά σου! Very emotional scene. The English and Greek commandos mingle with the celebrating crowd, which, of course, understands who they are -hence the little girl bearing the flower, as a token of respect for the commandos' contribution to the common cause. All of a sudden, the German oppressors arrive. The commando leader, Gregory Peck, although his team could fight or at least attempt to fight their way out, chooses to surrender in order to avoid casualties among civilians.
Greece paid a very heavy blood tribute in the period of the German Occupation (1941 - 1944) resisting the fascists in every available way (ambushing German soldiers, exploding facilities, bridges and airports hiding and aiding guerrillas and SAS commandos). Hundreds of thousands of people (men, women and children) were sent to concetration and death camps, executed or starved to death in a futile effort of the tyrant to suppress their uwavering and unequivocal devotion to freedom. Wonderful pages of bravery and self-denial were written in the book of Greek History and that's why it is truly heart-breaking that Greece, this little country that paid so dear a blood-price in the hands of the forces of evil, which she fought with unabated rage, instead of celebrating with the rest of the allies the triumpant ending of war in 1945, spent another five years entangled in the vortex of a civil war, that came to complete the disastrous work of the Germans.

The Greeks are very festive people in culture of both music and dress. I had a lot of Greek friends then, I respected them as I do all classes of the Baltic and Slavic.
The little girl did betray these men. If these commandos declined surrender , they as well as the town would killed. The SS would do this they did every country they occupied.

This scene with all those people singing and dancing, and the little girl bringing flowers is so anti-war although this is a war movie. Those people have lived war and knew that it is a terrible thing.,,,,,,,

    Repeat chorus (2nd Stanza)
    * mezedes being little appetisers of food, so comparbing the little mounds of food to the mountains)
** ylentzedes derives from the word to celebrate, so here referring to the people who know how to celebrate & enjoy life.

Greece and her people (like much of occupied Europe) paid a heavy price during and after WWII. When WWII ended the carnage in Greece got even worse for the next 4 years (45 to 49) during the Greek Civil war!
These two back to back wars truly decimated Greece but not the spirit of her people!

Hence, President Harry Truman’s brilliant concept of the Marshall Plan, which provided post-war Greece and other European countries with the economic and military assistance to assist them in their struggles with Communism.

well ,it depends in which area you live in Greece...the version Nana mouskouri sang are the verses of the song that every greek knows...the others versions have more verses that possibly are praising each area thy are coming from for example zante in zakynthos or kefallonia

What did the waiter say to the German soldiers ? I guess he said that there was no room for them because of the marriage. So the Germans looked for another cafè. I just understood "para poli" (too many) and "anderes kafe" ( other bar) .Thank you from Italy for answering. I apologise for my shaky English
