WOW. THis was fabulous!!! Vasilis are a GREAT dancer!! As a Mediterranean Greek here in NYC, this was really impressive. So I know this is a weird place to get emotional, but hear me out: I live in the US and here no one really talks about the Balkans (or most of Eastern Europe) so I didn't know anything about these countries and their cultures for a long time. At the same time, I'm Ashkenazi Jewish, so the traditional music from my heritage sounds similar to that of the Balkans. I had always just assumed that not many people knew the style of music and that it was dying out. I'm so happy I was wrong. It's amazing to listen to songs that I previously thought where an isolated phenomena, and realize that there's an entire region that gets it. It's been equally cool to hear music from the other side of the world and feel almost at home and familiar. I've been trying to lean more about the Balkans recently. It's awesome and y'all have the coolest culture! Anyway, that's it. Have a nice day :)
That's Great Hannah! My family is from Macedonia and I married an Ashkenazi Jewish woman. Our families always loved and got along well with each other as there were so many shared values and cultural elements. Klezmer sounds VERY much like Macedonian dance music! Our people even look physically alike -- people often puzzled over whether I was born Jewish or my wife was Greek or Macedonian. And Vailis, if you read this, Thank you SO much for this treat!
Hannah 🥰 our culture is still alive! I am Romanian and my husband is from Serbia but we moved as kids to Sweden! I remember when growing up in Romania everybody in Bucharest, where I’m from, listening to American/English music, Italian, Greek and some Arabic & Turkish! Anything but native music! Funny thing tho, as soon as many left Romania they suddenly started to listen to their native music! Me, I listen to everything cause I’m music addict ❤️❤️❤️ no music no life
Shalom from Serbia❤️we are very similar, almost the same. It is a shame because in the US they just think that Europe means France, Germany, UK, Spain, Italy… The Balkans with it all countries , culture are probably the most beautiful what Europe can show. I have friends who are Ashkanazi and Sephardic Jews and we were positiv shoked how similar we are. Greetings from Serbia
It's quite great, Hannah, that you've found a kindred cultural spirit at the other side of the world, namely in the Balkans. I know that feeling as well, as I myself feel strangely fascinated and "at home" with the traditional music of several other regions of the world I have little or no connection with. Though, of course, Klezmer and Balkan music do indeed share many similarities. In that respect, I would highly recommend watching one Balkan documentary (if you can find it), called "Whose song is this?" ("Чия е тази песен?" in the original). It was made by a Bulgarian woman, Adela Peeva, and it starts almost like a joke - a Bulgarian, a Serbian, a Macedonian, a Greek and a Turk are gathered in a pub in Istanbul. Anyway, the movie is about a song (a melody, actually) that exists in all Balkan countries and, naturally, most people here believe it's purely their own song. So the author sets out on a journey across the region, showing the different songs based on that common melody. Unfortunately, something that could serve to unite us, instead tends to divide us and Peeva demonstrated that with some rather provocative segments during her final demonstrations in Bulgaria and Serbia (i.e. where she and her husband are from, respectively). In any case, what I find interesting about that melody and which I am very sad that Peeva didn't really explore further, is that it's a melody stretching far beyond the Balkans - from Spain all the way to India. And from what I've seen, its origin actually seems to be from the al-Andalus, from the Sepharadic Jews, and from there it seems to have spread east, influencing an Italian Renaissance composer, Boney M's hit "Rasputin" and possibly even the national anthem of Israel. It's quite fascinating! Greetings from Bulgaria!
My grandparents came from Marmara. They were Greek living in a Turkish island. I can see both cultures in the dance and music. Beautifully done. And by the way, the videography was fantastic,

That was a great message! Thank you very much! :)
