- Today we explore this beautiful abandoned manor house that sits in the wide open English countryside.
Built in 1564, the second family to reside here held the estate for nearly 200 years, the last member of the family was beheaded for treason and the mansion passed to Henry the eighths widow, Catherine Parr.
It was eventually purchased from the crown and worked on a great deal, that is what we see here today, including the early English renaissance walled garden.
It was eventually inhabited by just one women right up until the second world war, after the war the council purchased the estate and it was then used as a children’s convalescent home.
The idea at the time was that poorly children would benefit from country or sea air, some would have stayed here for a few weeks, some a few years, tragically permanently disabled children where sometimes abandoned at these places.
Finally, it became a hotel in the 1960s and was still in business until June of 2020, after already going into administration, it was forced to closed its doors for good due to the pandemic...
Its neat hedges and tidy pathways still holding their shape, this may the final glimpse of this garden in its prime.

Just one thing about its history: Catherine Parr died on the 5th of September 1548. If this building was built in 1564 there is obviously no way she could have lived here.
Suggest they're using the historyrabblegabble as an excuse to roam and particularly highlight the remaining items of liftable value..... Ie note the attention upon the fireplaces. Scuse me if I'm wrong but I ain't that fick.
The manor has been around since 1087 and is obviously now not the original building, the present building being built in 1693. It is not even the same place Katherine owned but on the same land. It was converted into a hotel in 1960.

It’s hard to imagine how 500+ years ago when this was built the handcraft it took to carve the wood items like the fireplace mantles to be able to build this so long ago and a lot of the mansion is in fairly decent condition. That stained glass is stunning.
I'm American, where the oldest buildings are barely antiques. I love seeing these magnificent buildings so steeped in history Beautiful enormous works of art. Really appreciate the posting
I would disagree - while we obviously America does not have the history of the UK as it is much newer, I’d hardly call homes and buildings that stand today from the 1700’s barely antiques.

Awesome. At 29:57, the stained glass contains Catherine Parr's emblem, the Tudor Rose, which appears repeatedly throughout the home. That secret passageway is killer! An amazing opportunity to see a manor with historical significance built nearly 500 years ago!
No it doesn't. Katherine's emblem was a blond woman surrounded by a Tudor rose like a dress. Katherine never saw the inside of this building as it is not the same one from her time.
That is Henry 's Tudor Rose.
I agree with the Tudar 🌹 and only some things could possibly be from then but everything else is too modern ,
These houses were continuously updated by each generation.

Someone with lots of money can bring this property back to its original beauty, with tender love and care . Who will care ?? 💕

Unfortunately it’s got a lot worse recently.
A few weeks ago some low life’s ripped all of the lead of the roof exposing the wooden beams,it’s open to the elements and looking very poor.
Such a crying shame.

This is such a lovely place. I loved the drone footage, especially as you looked down over the house and garden and came down into the garden, so pretty. Jess you did a great job with the introductory voice-over. All so good, i truly hope someone takes 5his place on and it doesn’t stay abandoned... but at least we got to see it 😊🥰

The tunnel was apparently a smugglers tunnel that went all the way down to the beach,how true it is I don’t know,as it’d have to be a couple of miles long.
had a tour of the cellars when I was a school kid by the then owners,good vid guys,hopefully it’ll be up and running again soon,such a great building.

Hardly smugglers, those tunnels were built for escape of the Nobility during the wars of the Roses, and from religious persecution, smugglers would have come later..that was for survival
More than likely those tunnels were the remains of an ancient sewer system designed to flush out sink, privy, and kitchen waste water, along with run off from the roofs during storms. Water from “toilets” may have been “flushed out” with buckets, from strategically placed indoor privies. Most likely built hundreds of years ago. The rain water would have flushed most detritus out but every now and them someone from the manor would have had to go in and brush/shovel out the larger matter not taken care of by the rains. The natural stream in there could have been purposeful to help move all the muck as far from the manor as possible. Too many people, living close in an estate generations ago to have cesspools so close to the house. Brilliant sanitary engineering for the times. The Hotel or the school probably sanitized the tunnels years ago that’s why they look so clean now. Only rain water from the roofs running off in there now. 🌺🌸

They should not have got in there really. It is now owned by someone else and was not actually abandoned in the first place. It was waiting for a buyer that's all.
That was marvellous! Such a wonderful place. Could imagine Katherine Parr, Princess Elizabeth and Thomas Seymour living there. It really put a frame around the many stories told about their relationship. Thank you so much.
They did not live there, this building was erected over century after her death.

I agree. It does look like a great restoration already with a really first class interior finish. Someone has put a lot of time and care into this house with an excellent high standard and with good design skills, who really understands the character of the building. The attention to detail is remarkable and It looks brand new inside and not gloomy like a lot of big places. It is lovely and really in keeping with the period and character of the place. Not many houses look good empty but this one does, so imagine how it looks furnished.

Lovely and dramatic intro. EWF said it was too dangerous to enter the tunnel when he was there. But it seemed pretty safe once you passed the slate near the entrance. Right proper explore! And the palace was amazing.

I absolutely loved this tour! Such grandeur! I'm from the U.S. and we have nothing to compare with this place! Of course our country is just a babe compared to England's....I have always been in awe of your castles and manors! Can you imagine the intrigue that happened in this place during the Tudor reign? I have read a lot of books on the history of Henry VIII. As far back as the War of the Roses....I can only hope someone decides to take this beauty on so it doesn't fall into disrepair! Henry VIII has nothing to do with The War of the Roses. He was born in 1491. The war of the roses was from 1455 to 1487. You're mistaking Henry VIII and his Father Henry VII
@@rosierennie5867 ....the war of the roses was between the Lancastrain's and the York's. Henry Vll took the throne after defeating Richard lll. Henry Vll married Edward lV daughter, Elizabeth. The red and the white roses were made one....it merged the Lancaster's and the York's. It was from them two that Arthur and Henry Vlll were born.

Beautiful manor. I think it's a shame though, chopping all the upper grand rooms up to make hotel room. That little bathroom with the fireplace right next to the loo, would have been one grand room. The cheap doors on the first floor, and light fixtures. Shame it was not restored.
Also I wonder if the stained glass is original? Tudor Roses 🌹 everywhere!! That’s just Amazing!!! I hope it’s protected and no dumb ass kids get in there and destroy all of that irreplaceable history!! Especially the stain glass windows! I can just see Catherine Parr walking up those stairs in her elegant gowns.
Yes, it's a beautiful place. i also hope no one gets in there and destroys anything. On the main staircase, I believe that is Henry & Katherine Parr in that stained glass. They were and remained very good friends!
What a lot of these kids don't recognize is they are opening up these houses to theft of the period pieces that are left that keep it being valuable, getting it sold AND to people being shot who come for a ''visit'' after these houses are sold. All it takes is one good barrister/solitictor/attorney with a good paralegal.
The Tudor rose stained glass would have been Victorian replacements for old murky windows.Like the Stars on the ceiling in the chapel at Hampton Court.

I am sure that someone with a lot of money will come along and buy it, either a rich oil Sheik or technology entrepreneur, just as a tax write off, but hopefully it will go to the National Trust, and they can return it to it’s original glory.

Would be nice to see it bought and opened back up, whilst its in good condition!
Wowzers! What a thrill to be able to tour such a beautiful historic property! I'm not surprised there are so many chandeliers - the size of the spaces and the height of the ceilings would require fixtures that could throw as much light as possible. If there had been any doubt to whom the home belonged you'd only need to see the gorgeous tile floor in the main hall with its repeating pattern of Tudor roses to know its historic legacy. That sigil is carried out throughout the house in the stained glass doors and windows as well as the outer carvings of the stair treads. Alas, the rose tiles in the fireplace surround are not Tudor roses nor are they original to the house as they date from the Art Nouveau/Arts & Crafts period (late 19th - early 20th century). Good heavens how awesome that must have been! I would have loved to spend a day just going through and examining plaster work and mouldings, floor tiles, wood carvings, and fireplace details. Thank you so much for the excellent video!

knowing the history of most childrens homes you can only imagine some horrors that may have gone unnoticed for some poor children adults were so cruel back then

Half the kitchen floors in the US had black and white checkerboard tiles or linoleum at one time or another. Stop buying into stupid conspiracy theories. Sadly the kitchen must have been ripped out and replaced with a modern industrial one, most of that had been removed so the room was a real mess and we left it out 👎 Shame some original features have been lost here!

Love how you research and share this in your presentations with excellent commentary which is sadly lacking with several UK explorers.
As much as I love these guys, this was a bit of a travesty to be honest. The building was not abandoned and the link to Katherine is so tiny it doesn't even matter. It has a far more interesting history than being owned by a queen who probably never even saw the inside of it. This was an illegal explore and hope they don't do that again!

Amazing .. 👏 loved it.. I think the viewers comment about the tunnel once being an advanced sewer system for that time period, w/ water flowing to keep it washed out, and probably power cleaned in recent times, seems the most plausible. I thought at first it would have been an escape route, but bc it narrowed so much, most adults probably wouldn't fit.
Wow best find I have watched so far. I loved that you went in the basement and tunnel. A lot of explorers dont look in the basement and attics and I feel it is always a let down. They are the best bits

Stunning home! I wonder if Cathrine Parr haunts it? She died while giving birth. Queen Elizabeth 1st stayed there until her Uncle by marriage Seymore got her in trouble for tickling her. Or something crazy like that. Amazing history in the home. Especially all the changes after Henry’s the 8th Son took to the throne.

Such a gorgeous place ! It's been kept in good condition so perfectly. That tunnel did it for me. I reckon Sam would have regretted not going down if he didn't. I'm not a claustrophobic person but seeing how narrow it was made me feel uneasy. Sam's eyes are just like my son's, I felt I was looking at my son ! Absolutely great explore 👍🏻
Whoa....that was absolutely beyond words! Starting from the end, I'm going to guess that 'rabbit tunnel' was larger when it was built. Over the very many years the building settled and things shifted, the tunnel was squeezed into a smaller more narrow passage. I hope your Mom's don't ever see that footage! So much appreciate your video of that glorious place! The details in the rooms, and how every bathroom was different, and those gorgeous fireplaces! Got the impression a crew goes in there periodically to dust, keep out cobwebs and vacuum. Just discovered you this evening and looking forward to seeing more videos! Cheers from Texas!
