      Winter pruning is the best. You can prune watersprouts and suckers at any time during the year. You can also prune diseased and damaged wood any time during the year. All else in winter.

    Is it advisable to prune a plum tree in the springtime after leaves have started sprouting? It is March here in Louisiana and I just found your video!

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is not really advisable but you can do a small amount. Say instead of 30% of the tree like I pruned in the video, only prune 10% of yours.

    I thought pruning plum trees over winter while dormant increases the risk of disease such as silver leaf because the tree cannot heal the wound?

    Yipes I am so clueless but this is still the most helpful video, thank you. So do I remove MOST of the 1 year old growth but leave some for future pruning? But not to remove more than 30% at a time.

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome. Just don't remove more than 30% of the tree's total branches.

  • @bhovendralall2475
    @bhovendralall2475 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is it the same if I space the branchs out instead of cutting to much off? Let's say you have a branch that crosses in the middle, can you pull and guide it outward like if you wanted to use some of the branches for a nice shadey spot

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could do that but remember that pruning will help induce growth the next season. So, it could actually add the the foliage and thickness of the tree and ultimately add shade.

      Hello. Glad you are here. We just use a hardwood mulch around the trees. We don't use any composted manure. Usually, the compost sold around here is composted vegetable matter with leaves, etc.

    Hi thanks for the video. I have a couple of questions.
    How long will a branch fruit for? Will it just keep fruiting for the life of the tree, or should I be looking to keep a few of the younger shoots (1 year old) to replace some of the older shoots that become less productive?

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome. Just keep an eye on what is fruiting and what isn't. Remove old wood that is unproductive and keep some newer branching that look promising for the future.

    • @CountryLivingExperience

      I think you mean leaves? Most insecticides will not harm the tree itself. You need to choose the best spray for your particular insect problem.

      We use liquid copper. It is a natural fungicide, bactericide, virucide, etc. It always works well for us on a variety of plants for a variety of issues. Takes a few treatments to kill the blight but it works. This is the one we have always used: amzn.to/2T33To5 Southern Ag Liquid Copper Fungicide. Hope that helps.

    thank you so much for this, will definitely use this as a guideline to help prune my plum tree in the winter. You mentioned that you can prune fruit trees twice a year. When is the other ideal pruning time besides late winter? I have a severely overgrown plum tree on the home we just purchased.

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can prune in the early fall and very early spring with good results. Summer pruning is a challenge and should only be done when there is disease or damage.

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, no problem. Prune means two things in English. To prune something means to trim and thin it’s branches. Used that way, it is a verb. A prune is a dried plum fruit. Used in that context, it is a noun.

    Thanks for the video. It helped answer some of my questions. I still have one though. How do you keep it from growing too tall? I've seen some Italian plum trees (which is what I have) that are shaped almost like a giant umbrella. This appeals to me since I'm of that age where falling off a ladder could very well be the end of me. lol Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. .........Angie

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it was helpful. Shaping a tree is important for sure. When it is winter, focus on cutting the top portion of the tree down to a manageable size for you. Do not trim much else from the tree that winter, but save it for the next season. Remember the 30% rule. The tree will remain healthy if you prune no more than 30% every pruning season. If it is physically too high, get a friend to do it the first year and then you will not have to worry about it again. You will just need to maintain the shorter shape.

    • @whatanitemare
      @whatanitemare 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks very much for taking the time to reply. I'm waiting for the leaves to fall so I have a clearer picture of the branch structure. I'll be sure to remember the 30% rule!@@CountryLivingExperience

    I thought the current thinking was to prune stone fruit trees immediately after harvest (late summer/autumn) when fungal disease is least likely.
    Nice clean up of the tree but I'm still waiting to see how you brought down the height so that the fruit is reachable

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually current thinking is for a Spring prune. I have always done it like this and not had any problems. These trees were on the property before I bought it. It is going to take some time to prune these to a reachable height without stressing the tree. I did another pruning video after this one. It is in our video archives on our channel. Go check it out.
