- Bialowieza forest. The last remaining primeval forest in Europe often referred to as the last remaining wilderness of Europe is located on the border between Poland and Belarus and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Bialowieza forest is home to about 2000 European bison, Europe's largest land animal.
The bison occurred almost all over Europe until the early Middle Ages. In the 1920s, the bison was under acute threat of extinction and the last free-living bison was shot in the Caucasus in 1927. All bison alive today are descended from twelve bison kept in enclosures.
The first free-ranging herds of bison were reintroduced in the 1950s in the area of what is now Białowieża National Park. Now it is by far the largest bison population in Europe.
As I heard that in winter they are particularly easy to spot even from the road without going deeply into the forest I was absolutely thrilled with the idea to see them and we have set out on the road...
