- Today I talk a little about these weird things sitting on my shelf... The glass insulator! From the telephone pole to sitting on roadsides, to train tracks, these curios little pieces of glass history go unbeknownst to many.

Glad I found this video, been searching around to see what these are. My grandma passed last year and left me her property, in one of the buildings in the back there was a room full of these things and I didn't know what in the world they were. Probably 40 boxes of em, my best guess is 700-800 of em. Most of em are green and blue, some clear and yellowish but most dark green. Hated to just throw them away b/c they were neat looking, gave a box to the neighbor who used them for walkway decoration but I've got no use for em, if anyone reading this is interested in them hit me up, I live in south western VA.
What a find haha!
@bennypit4411 Out of all these, some could have some value. You need to take pictures and make some research. Are they treaded or treadless?
As someone who's just recently got into hunting these pretty glass pieces, you really hit the nail on the head with this video! By the way, I believe that the CD-113 (Model 12) that you have, was used for individual home use as you can see the top wire groove for the main line and the smaller bottom groove for the line that would go directly to the house itself.
nice to hear the hobby is still alive! and thanks for the info about the CD-113 :)
Stapler as telegraph key.
Love it.

The two you could not identify were Cd 102s. The light purple Brookfield is very nice.
thanks, yeah I love them. Have so many fond memories of grandma with them.
The Hemingray 9 is a "pony" insulator, used on local, lower voltage telephone lines. it is classed as a CD 106 in the "Consolidated Design" identification system in use by insulator collectors. The "Star" insulator and the "BROOKFIELD" insulators are also "pony" insulators. Both are classified as CD 102.
It would sure be nice to take a time-traveling journey and be transported back 100 years ago, and walk up and down some streets in your average city or town. You would be amazed to look up and see gobs of aqua, green or blue glass insulators in the air, installed on the tops of telephone poles!
A few telegraph lines with insulators still in place are still up in a few places in the US currently (mostly along a few railroads), but not many! It won't be long before they are all dismantled. Sad.
Thanks for the great info David!
Not sure the value but the Brookfield is definitely the rarest one you got, the others are more common.
interesting maybe I should look back into finding what model it is.
Sup EJbuddy !
Your star CD 102 was made for General Electric, probably in Elmer, NJ.
Awesome! thanks for the info :)
Funny enough they were used on the bottom of chairs in railroad depots. Like you said people use them for candles and lights as well.
crafty folks
And we don't have that...
I like your video about insulators.👍
Thanks 👍
I built a whole era off my life based off these things, made new friends because of them gotten outside more and I usually live out side. I’ve looked even harder for stuff older than 1950, I have found new music because of insulators,if it wasn’t for these little guys I don’t know how good my life would be right now. If you want a good insulator hunting song look up Sonne by rammstine!
I keep finding y 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
