Hey Rei. Regan from NY here. I have been to Taiwan many times. It is still one of my favorite places. I cannot tell you how much your Asia bike/vegan tour videos inspired and helped me reconnect to my dreams after suffering some traumatic loses in my life. I was sorry to see most of them deleted. But happy some of them are still up. I hope all is well in your life and that you are still riding. ✌🏼❤️🚴
Totally agree mate. Next to NZ, Taiwan is one of my fav places ever. Portuguese called it Isle Formosa or Beautiful Island for a reason. I went to Taiwan and fell in love. Kept going back. People are amazing too. My brother & I met a woman on the train from Taipei to Hualien. We were going down to hike Toroko Gorge. Anyway, this woman lived in Hualien and was a total stranger to us...but offered us a place to stay and the keys to her car! I really can’t wait to visit again.
Hi Rei, I cycled the Taroko Gorge because you, yes you Rei inspired me. Your enthusiasm is infectious. It is the best mountain ride I have ever done. I am not ashamed to admit it but I went from the top down, down, down for a long long long way. It was fantastic. I was very lucky with the weather until about half way down when the clouds came in and a few tiny spots of rain started but by then I was into the gorge itself. Absolutely breathtaking is all I can say. Has to be one of the best mountain descents in the world. They are building lots of new big road tunnels lower down which is destroying the character of the old road so get there quick before it becomes a major highway if you want to ride this mountain road. But I did cycle up into the mountains from the west to get to Taroko National Park which was hard but worth every single turn of the pedals. Sadly I didn't have time to ride further south to Alishan and Sun Moon Lake like you did so maybe next time. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much Rei. I also tried to make a vlog but it is crap in comparison to yours. You are a natural presenter. Please make more vlogs as your films are so inspiring. Did you go back to Taiwan? Do you still cycle tour?
Welcome back Ray Pokel! Not sure if you have any interest at all, but we have a stand up comedy show in English on 03/07 at the Taipei Comedy Club if you happen to be around.
Hey Rei. I can’t tell you how much your bike trip thru Taiwan inspired me. Although i have traveled there before and loved it, i never cycled it. I remember watching your vids 4 yrs ago right after i donated a kidney to my brother which was an amazing experience. My bro & I talked about our dreams and we both started moving towards making them a reality. I decided to save some $ for a couple years and then make a similar cycling trip to yours. But soon as I reached my cash goal & quit my job, my brother sadly died from a freak brain aneurysm. Really Messed me up. How life can change in an instant. I am just now beginning to put my life back together and muster the strength to embrace my dreams again. Anyway...i noticed you haven’t posted for awhile. Wanted to send you some good vibes mate & Hope all is well in your world. - Regan
Wow, what a nice video. I saw many clips shot of Taroko from a car or a moped on TH-cam, but none conveyed as much the awesomeness of Taroko as your video. Really well done. By the way, that's the Pacfic Ocean, the largest ocean in the world!
That's an awesome upload. If anyone ask's why a cycle tour I may very well show them this video. Looks like you had a wondrous day. Keep up the good work.
Hi, I am a Taiwanese , I rode my road bike from Buli to wuling before. There are many tricky climb . But you look like very easy to climb. So I think your are awesome. You finished the Taiwan's highest mountain highway.
I envy you the good weather, man. Most of the times I have planned a trip in Taiwan it was marred by the weather. My best bike trip around the island was in May 2014. Alas, I haven't been able to replicate it.
You can ride in spring or fall that have a great chance to see a sea of clouds on the top of the road . Several roads like that are so beautiful you should ride in Taiwan . Welcome to Taiwan again : }
I rode thru Taroko on a scooter with my bro. Would like to try it on a bicycle one day. Beautiful area. I stayed in a great hostel on the top of a mountain in Hualien.
It was spectacular (both the ascend and descend as well as the scenery), wasn't it? It's a pity we missed each other by a day. We rode up from Puli to Wuling (3275m ASL) on 22 and 23 Nov 2014. We ended up with sunburn on our faces. We were prepared for the cold (really cold despite the sunny weather) and the steepness as my brother failed his first attempt to climb up Wuling earlier this year. A tip though, the Death Road in Bolivia offers similar 3000m exhilarating descend. 'Death' because the cliffside is not generally fenced. Have fun!!
I love Taiwan, and have hiked Taroko gorge a few times and rode a moped thru it too, but never bicycled there. Looks fun. Question, did you buy a bicycle there? Or did you bring yours from abroad?

So pleased to have found these vids again as I love Taiwan and riding in the mountains. I thought Ray had taken them down, obviously not this one.
That “javelin” camera rig worked so surprising well that it’s giving me ideas.

What handle bar are you using in the video, it seems to give you a very upright riding position and this is something I am trying to achive
thanks
Jones H bar. That's a bit late, sorry.
Now THAT was worth it all, wasn't it - forget about the hubs - and the nasty office ladies, didn'y ya?
Doesn't cycling involve moving the pedals???
+Joslin Webster ok I thought you were on an electric bike...
Dude I'm riding that and shooting my own video. We'll be Downhill Taroko Brothers.
We'll start a tumblr for it or something.
whats a good website to book a hostel?
:( not available on mobile, and that's what I use 99% of the time.
You look free as a bird- from a Taiwanese .
