  • "Doctor, why is this SO expensive?" Every dentist hears this question from time to time. And it can become awkward if you can't provide a smooth (and transparent) answer! In this week's tip, we share how to address this question head-on and respond in a way that patients can understand and appreciate.

    And my counter to this doctor is, why always go for the best? I don't need to always ride in a Rolls Royce; I just need to ride in a Toyota. Get me something that works and affordable.

      Hi sfbluestar, Thanks for your comment. Obviously, in some cases, there's a degree of choice in the matter - although not all dental issues have multiple treatment options. In many cases, while some choices are more expensive, the trade off is it lasts longer and functions better. Obviously, it depends on what the doctor recommends and what the patient is looking for. Best, The MGE Team

    Chairs $15,000K? Lights $5000K$? that doesn't sound right. I'm not saying he's lying but someone is overpricing.

    • @nikushim6665
      @nikushim6665 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's because he is lying, chairs run about 3 to 8K (which includes alot of the equipment attached to it. Oh yeah and they all generally come with a light (you know the one he claims costs 5k on its own)..... Also leaves out the fact that most dental offices are not solo practice, they are generally company owned group practices. So the dentist didn't even invest into that equipment to start with. Dentistry is expensive, because people are willing to pay it and there is minimum oversight or regulation in regards to pricing.

    • @mew2wins919
      @mew2wins919 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If the dentist is in network with your insurance company, then the insurance company set the pricing. There is literally extreme oversight of the pricing. Thats what being in network means.

    I live in California and have the same dentist all my life. She is expensive in my eyes but I look at what she has done with the money. She has grown her practice to a office building full of dental offices offering different specialties in dentistry. I know how much taxes are in this area for retail or business locations. I have a great understanding of the cost of employees. She took on a great deal of extra education in dentistry to be able to understand all sides of dentistry. I respect all this about her and am happy to pay those high prices as long as I am a patient of hers. Also if you just spend a little money and take care of your teeth what a couple hundred bucks a year for a good cleaning. At least I only am asked to come in yearly as I take very good care of my teeth.

    If the chair n light is so expensive, then this profession should be less profit making or to be profitable after longer time, it simple doesn't mean that every single suffering patient should pay for chair n light, they should be paying for your practice i.e.treatment (don't charge more than that treatment deserves)
    Like wise we don't pay a taxi driver for his car or car loan, we simply pay to travel from one spot to another. He manages to pay for his car, loan, ect...

    I always like to tell my patients that if anyone ended up in a physician’s office and told em that they needed some kinda of expensive surgery for sure they would accept bringing up how the health of their teeth is just as important as their general health.

    • @kalinjax
      @kalinjax 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      But, unlike expensive surgery, we don’t have acceptable insurance coverage to help with the cost of these expensive procedures. If you need a $20k surgery and you have good insurance, you’re only going to end up spending fractions of that out of pocket. $20k worth of dental work and even the best dental insurance on the market won’t cover even half of it. You’re right though. The health of our teeth is just as important as our general health and it is an absolute abomination that dental procedures are not covered under medical insurance.

      Dentist, unlike the healthcare providers don’t allow you to make a payment plan. They want all the money upfront. Some of us can’t afford to pay it all upfront.

    really good video... the question becomes why are dental supplies and equipment permanently expensive? why doesn't competition drive down prices?
    why don't manufacturers pass cost cutting on to patients? why can you get the same care cheaper in foreign countries?
    I have grown up with computers and seen installations that used to cost millions now cost a few dollars. dental costs NEVER GO DOWN!!!

      That’s the way the dental insurance industry is set up in America. Dentists didn’t choose that. Dentists would love to have insurance pay everything for patients, they would all be very busy.

  • @MattersNot

    Dentist are criminals if you ask me that “tube” of dentist paste can what repair 200 teeth? And it costs $300 I got one tooth pulled and it cost me $550 in Canada you could probably pay for everything in your dentist office in half a days work the guy took what 3 minutes to pull my tooth? So poor families have to go through absolute torture for months or years maybe their entire life because they can’t afford to fix their teeth! That’s $500 for a tooth pulled no teeth filling paste used, but a tooth can cost up to $2,000 to $3,000 to get fixed if you need a root canal. It should be under medical insurance. Not a different insurance called dental insurance.

    I can understand maybe basic medical care, but Dental is also vital to health care.
    I think I might have an isssue with my Wisdom teeth, and its probably going to go rotten, and hurt my health because I dont have the money to fix it.
    Dental that fixes your life should be free, Aesthetics should cost money

      I feel your pain and agree with you 100000%! Our mouth is part of our body. People can literally die because of bad teeth and yet the insurances are terrible. May as well not have it by the time you get that bill. And I don't want to go to Mexico for help but, it's WAY cheaper there WITH TOP NOTCH technical equipment. SMH. Good luck to you.

      Be careful with that term, yes you can run an unfair business practice. But, when you f over the wrong person, they CAN do what they want if they feel it's bad enough, and we CAN sit here and laugh at the irony of what our free will allows us to do. Best advice, be and play fair.

    Most of our dental issues and illnesses arise from our diet and posture. Weston A Price wrote a book (Nutrition and Physical Degeneration) back in the early 1900s about his research on some of the African tribes and communities having perfect dental health, no diseases as such, and attributed this to their nutrition and way of life quickly realising that our food and other bad habits are what keeps us in the dental chair! Sugar is the main culprit, from child to adult, from sweets to alcohol and smoking or lack of vitamins......WE are keeping these dentists in business apparently
