- Police in riot gear detained pro-Palestinian protesters at Columbia University in Manhattan Thursday, loading them into multiple busses. Several participating students were suspended, including the daughter of Rep. Ilhan Omar, who was suspended by Barnard College. Lilia Luciano has more.

Aidan Parisi who is interviewed in this video is one of the students who was suspended 2 weeks ago for planning a pro-Hamas event on campus. Columbia told him vacate his dorm in 24 hours and he refused to do so. It's not entirely clear to me why he's still there.

Palestine was an 'administrative entity' from 1920 to 1948, with laws, citizenship, currency, etc. It was also a state in the early iron age, and again during the Roman era. The Palestinians (or whatever you want to call them-people lived there) have the sociological markings of a unique culture: food, dialect, dance, and clothing. There are different ideas about borders, sovernty, etc.-doesn't mean ppl don't live there (look up mandates). Just ask ppl in the Virgin Islands-never founded, not a country or state, but a U.S. territory. Palestinians always lived there and are descendants of the netufians and canaanites, thousands of years before the Judaism. The fact you mentioned this alone proves you just repeat points. It doesn'tmatter if a border shifts, identity, language, religion, passport-ppl were always there. They had mayors, clean cities, laudatory universities and industries-again, people were there.

The allegations that the university made these arrests due to pressure from donors, politicians, or other outside influences with their own interests and agendas are particularly disturbing. A university should be a bastion of free inquiry, debate, and the open exchange of ideas - not beholden to the whims of moneyed interests seeking to dictate what views can and cannot be expressed on campus.

Living in a world where they arrest students over protesting in the modern era ESPECIALLY after 1969 is nothing short of shocking and unacceptable. Administrative violence through the use of academic, social, technological, political, judicial, or policing power used on protestors is unacceptable. I'd walk right out as a university president and resign in solidarity and wouldn't care if the university administrators, donors, or bigoted parents mocked me or didnt give a crap. There are certain things you don't do and one of them is arrest harmless student protestors over your own xenophobia. I'm too old to look back at progress and see that things are going backwards.
