The Great Benefit of Making Sea Salt Soap

  • In this homemade soap video, I will be sharing my step-by-step process of how to make a natural sea salt soap recipe. Because salt reduces the foaming action of cold process soap we need to use a high coconut oil recipe, so we will be using a higher than normal percentage of superfat to give us a soap that feels lovely on the skin. There are many types of salt that you can use but most people use either sea salt or Himalayan salt which often gives a more pink colour to the bar.
The salt soap is often used in a spa so this is a great way for you to make your own sea salt spa bars and give your skin a real treat. If you fancy making it yourself and learning more about this style of soap making, why not grab the recipe below?
** Sea Salt Soap Recipe **
    350g Coconut oil
    100g Olive oil
    25g Avocado oil
    25g Castor oil
    67g Sodium hydroxide
    150g Distilled or filtered water
    175g Fine sea salt
    15g Optional Spearmint essential
    Himalayan salt to decorate

I use ocean water that has been filtered several times & then boiled. It makes a great bar. I do make them in a loaf, so I cut them very soon after pouring. In addition I use a small amount of cocoa butter

I'd definitely use the salt even though the date says its expired, kind of odd how salt can expire. Those bars turned out beautiful. I have made sea salt bars before and they turned out nice. I've used both regular sea salt and himalayan salt in my sea salt bars.

My understanding is that the rock salts exist because their regions were under sea water many years ago. That might be the reason for the use of the term 'sea salt' for 'rock salt'. Happy for correction if my understanding is incorrect.

Thank you very much for your video! I learned a lot. I have been making my own soap for over 10 years, but only resently made sea salt bars. By the way: Tibetan salt technically is a sea salt too, only it is salt from an ancient ocean. Right now some authorities say you should it only Tibetan or Celtic salt, as regular sea salt has microscopic pieces 🎉of plastic in it.

I love salt soaps! I just can't use them due to the high coconut oil used in them. My skin is sensitive to it in soaps, I've tested this extensively with a 100% coconut oil soap and a 40% superfat, and my skin was still irritated by it.
So could I use another oil, like palm kernel flakes, instead of coconut oil for a salt soap? Maybe using a little less of the palm kernel flakes and using something else that helps bubbles, like a milk or sugar, along with other oils?

    • @SoapSchoolUK
