3.0 Mercruiser/Volvo Boat Carb Won't Start and Bogs - Easy Fix

  • The 3.0 Mercruiser and Volvo Penta engines are the same. In this instance, I wasn't able to start the engine without starting fluid and it would bog trying to go beyond 2k RPM without being VERY gentle on the throttle. Did some research and isolated it to the accelerator pump. I initially thought that maybe the internal spring was bad, but once I removed that part of the carb, the solution was obvious. Rust was preventing the rocker arm from resetting. You could probably fix the problem by spraying some WD-40 in the gap and cycling the arm to get it in and break up the rust.

According to the iboat forums, the 3.0 doesn't have any vacuum ports.

Excellent video. Have you changed the mechanical fuel pump on the Volvo penta 3.0? I’m about to attempt it but can’t find any videos. Is that boat a Glastron 175?

I have not done the pump but can’t imagine it’s terribly difficult. I believe it’s a 175 but I’d have to double check. Great little boat!

99.9999% of the time you take out the pump, clean the corrosion and put it back in.
