Darcy, I love watching your videos. (You have helped me more than I can say with all the dehydrating videos!) You are such a kick! Love the astronaut approach to living! My. grands will LOVE this recipe! All 7 will be lining up in front of Grandma, begging "please, please, please"!
I've done the candy but have not found the courage to do the ice cream yet. I'm looking forward to trying them this year. A suprise for my nice and nephew...they are going to love this. Thanks for showing us the process. Be safe.
My Grands love astronaut ice cream! This video reminds me I need to pick up some more ice cream sandwiches when I got to town! Thank you so much for the information and your time! The Great Value brand didn't poof out for me. I cut them in thirds and keep the wrapper on. There were cracks in the ice cream running vertically though, but they didn't fall apart.
This looked like fun! Then getting the telescope out added another layer of fun. I don' t own a freeze dryer, but I am enjoying the fun of it all. Blessings.
Freeze dried ice cream sandwiches are one of the best foods on the planet! I also like them cut up into bite size pieces before freeze drying them. Heaven! ❤
I have done the mini ice cream cones. I cut the ice cream part off and lay them side by side. It is alittle tall if I don't. I always let my FD run alittle longer on the initial cool down period before I put them in. I usually let mine run for about 30 minutes so it will be cooler and less melting from the ice cream. everyone loves ice cream.
I do remember seeing the moon landing, and as a kid I wanted to be an astronaut. Space ice cream sounds like a dream come true. Thank you for this video.
I’ve done ice cream sandwiches once so far. I removed them from their wrapper and cut them into small bite size pieces. I also had some bubbling like yours did. I think some of that is from them melting a bit in the process of cutting. Next time I plan to freeze them for longer. And also have my trays pre-frozen temps as well.
Fun stuff! Tang and space food sticks were part of my childhood, for sure. I'm sure you would have been an awesome asset to NASA. 👩🚀🌠 I definitely appreciate all that you have shared on the web's Earth-bound but virtual spaces over the years. 👏🤩🌎 I now have a freeze dryer, but have not tried this yet. Always more to learn! Thanks so much for sharing your observations and adventures. Have fun with your friends and Happy Freeze Dried February! 😄👍💖
If you're in Houston, go to the Space Center! I'm sure you've been before, though. I never got to go as a kid, but I bugged my mom for a LOT of freeze-dried ice cream in a LOT of other museum gift shops. They always had it there for some reason, and we spent a lot of time in museums. Nerds unite! This was fun to watch.
This was the first thing I wanted to try when we got our freeze drier but I put it off because it was the middle of summer. Then just kinda forgot about it. This is definitely back in my to do list. Hopefully in 2 weeks.
Live your shirt it matches your content. Interesting to see the ones in the paper package. I wonder if you prefreeze your freeze drier longer it might have helped. I know mine is usually about 50-57 degrees after the 15 minute prefreeze.
I haven't tried the freeze dried ice cream sandwiches yet. There might be some at our Women's Expo coming up soon. I'm hoping to get a freeze drier soonish.
I've been thinking of trying this but have always chickened out lol. Some of the photos of sweets blowing up and filling the freeze drier is not something I want to experience 😅
From what I understand, the "ice cream" in those sandwiches isn't true ice cream, but a mix of thickeners, sugars, gums and such. Perhaps making ice cream sandwiches from scratch would work better? I've got 2 trays of cubed chicken and 2 trays of diced potatoes from a can in my freeze dryer right now. I've mostly freeze dried meats.

I forgot to add, I use the mini ice cream sandwiches and do them whole.

I don't own a freeze dryer, but want to explore using freeze dried foods. I may explore thrive life.

I just cut my ice cream sandwiches in half and leave them in the paper. Our favorite ice cream is chocolate mint. I just use a cookie scoop for them.
how cool
I don't have a freeze-dryer yet. I'll check with my extension office if they have one to borrow.
I haven't tried the freeze dried ice cream sandwiches yet. There might be some at our Women's Expo coming up soon. I'm hoping to get a freeze drier soonish.
I have been dehydrating for 40 years. I would LOVE to freeze dry, just don't have the funds.
I thought this was interesting and would like to do with my grandchildren.
How did you determine which freeze drier to purchase? This looks like you could experiment with alot of different foods. This looks great!
This looks like fun! I need gluten and dairy free. Do you think it will work with coconut milk ice cream?
Barry interesting

I wasn't that impressed with sandwiches. Small scoops of high quality ice cream was much better.
