No, I bet you he went into performance thinking, "What a privilege I have to play my friend, the piano, and to show the world how beautiful she sounds on this amazing piece that is so close to my heart." Thank God for Horowitz!
What if Horowitz went into every performance thinking "I better not use too much pedal," "I better make sure that I hit that note on the fifth page like a slur instead of staccato," "I sure hope that critics won't get angry over my tempo choices"? We never would have heard of Horowitz, he would have been another mechanical piano player worried about nothing more than note and pedal perfection.
here of course he uses the pedal to express what he wants to express and its great but i heard Horowitz in the first London comeback concert, he was ill and during the scarlatti sonatas he did not go off from the pedal it was incredibly sad to listen, but it wasn t his intention to do this, he prooved this a week later when doing them a second time, great of course that time !!!!
wow, just reading the comments now. Its great to see musical debate, but sad to read some people having to use pathetic remarks on spelling and grammar to make their point. I play the piano as well as the trombone, and appreciate Horowitz technical skill, but like @trumpetpro has stated, when this piece was composed the piano was not as developed as it is in modern day, or in 1940 for that matter. Thus not much pedal should be used. However, this is Horowitz interpretation.
SCHuBERTSKI's Russian March alla 1942.....siege of Minsk? a collector's item / Irma Wolpe used to say that VH ruined a generation of American pianists..... but v e rrrry enterrrtainingggg....!
trombone999 - it's all so needless, the quibbling over little things. horowitz disdained such things - saying in the next recital, it'd all be different anyway!
I agree..not on the usage of pedal but on everyone being entitled to their own opinion...Moreover you haven't been disrespectful and there was nothing especially blasphemous in your comment on Horowitz (whom I adore). SoHence I think that the one who replied, Mr weetabixharry to name him, has proved a little childish, well that's my opinion and as it is opposed to his and since he has a perfect grammar and eloquence I guess I'm gonna get some thumbs down or a stinky reply from him....
You're welcome..and this last comment from you just proves that you're maybe even more "qualified" to comment - if it is a matter of qualification as it was hinted... But personnally I do not think "qualification" was the highest concern ;-) Have a nice day! ps-I am not a native speaker so I guess he will be even more embarassed now!
Well I DON'T CARE!! I felt it was a bit cowerdly and even more direspectful from people who, as you said, don't know you personnaly, to classify you as a "nerd". Ps-I admit the comment alone, before I'd read what it was echoing to, made me laugh! That's the trick...sometimes when style is correct, it can soften some substance that is definitely not correct.I'm sad I still encounter some such dramatically puritan opinons : "Ho gosh he doesn't worship Horowitz, let's give him a thumb down"
When your command of a computer keyboard is not even sufficient to facilitate the correct spelling of "too" or "pedal", it's no wonder that you feel qualified to criticise Horowitz's command of a piano keyboard. You are, after all, regarded as one of the great typists of the last century, whereas Horowitz is just another ignorant Internet nerd. Mr. Horowitz plays for the President of USA ? Couldn't they afford a better piano ? Oh they spent too much money for the military ? The USA mentality hasn't changed in the past 75 Years ! Regards, Patricia,

I believe Vladimir Horowitz is and was one of our greatest pianist of all time...I love the way he plays...and his boyish charm!
"[O]ne of the greatest pianists of our time..." now there's a phrase one doesn't hear much anymore, especially of someone in their thirties.
Incredible performance! Thanks for this condivision!

i am really glad these moments of beauty and power are making it to living ears.
Beautiful ! Bravo Vladimir Horowitz !
Thanks for the post!
I'm not the biggest Horowitz fan, but this is amazing.
wow. absolutely amazing. this one is also far better than the response to it.
wow...I can hear it !! Thankyou
Thank you
for myself, i like the later one from the 1980s - it has all those espressivo devices he used more and more. :)

evantorch - for real? i see he was associated with NBC - and is still alive even today!
The announcer was Don Pardo!
omg that sucks the end is absent! I like this recording much more than his other one that's on TH-cam.
isn't that a fascinating bit of history? people were really into strong leaders back then.

Another great interpreter of this piece is the pianist Alicia de Larrocha. I really recommend you listen to her version of TH-cam.
Yes.
1:10 music starts
Ecthelon - do you know his ~1987 recording? it's a great deal less manic, but has amazing colors and perfect clarity.

1942 was a fantastic year.... except for the war and all that.

@trumpetpro doesn't have a clue.
This is a very dry performance.
good! then put it up. :p

6:12 - the Austrian marching band is suddenly liquidized by the incoming Russian army.
Piano needs a good tuning
