His smile at the end touches me even more than the wonderful piece of Liszt. This is the happy and at the same time melancholic smile of a wise man who knows that he is close to the end of a long, fulfilling journey... I feel very touched. And I deeply admire this man.

his playing is superb! I didn't realize he suffered bouts of Depression, off and on took time off from performing and recording, underwent Psych for his Sexual Orientation so very sad... Who really cares...I feel bad if he was Gay, and never got to live his Truth. He gave so much to us through his performances
@@timothyj1966 As far as I know (read), he got "to live his truth" partially. If you listen at his st. torn playing you hear that he had to go through some "dark hours" in his life.

The way Horowitz plays those last runs in the Moszkowski etude very softly and fast is just astounding!!
Controlled emotions and virtuosity at all times. This is what made Horowitz one of the world's greatest pianist!
The amount of music that this virtuoso had committed to memory was phenomenal.

+mstalcup yes...one of the most beautiful happy smiles ever...his hypnotic loving music sends him to heaven...there he was in the good company of muses...i wished he played more pieces like that...and just to himself for his own pleasure...cause his genius was then even greater....he loves liszt...me too...and him...muse and angel

The cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, who worked a lot with Horowitz, once said, that the highlights of their joint concerts always came when Horowitz could play the extra tasks. Then the concert really got going with these many small, technically brillant miniatures, and the audience demanded more and more encores, which Horowitz played happily. It was like the box of pralines after a sumptuous feast, where nobody could and would stop.

Such a touching ending, you can tell how much he loves and identifies with the music he plays! I find range of tonal colour that Horowitz achieves astonishing - every single note has clearly been carefully considered and it results in a real sense of communication in every single phrase. Magical playing...
Yes! In an interview, he was asked how he was able to do what he does. He replied, "I love every single note."
Several pianists & I went to a live concert he gave in Philly in the late '70's and we were all absolutely shocked at how he made each piece sound like it was being played on a different piano. We could have sworn they had swapped the piano out for each piece if we hadn't been right there looking at him.
Brilliant Chopin, Moszkowski, etc. Interesting how his pinky-finger curls up and hides away when not in use. Great film.
Oh, people used to say his pinky is curled up like a snake ready to strike!!!!
One is at a loss for superlatives when listening to and watching this genius.
Many great pianists...only one HOROWITZ
Decades ago I almost cried when I heard about the deaths of two great 20th century pianist : Gould and Horowitz.

This is highly entertaining, never mind impressing. Those fingers playing Chopin and the Moszkowski piece are nearly 82 years old. Thank you very much for posting this. May any old legend be available for online viewing on TH-cam. I like to think that Horowitz would not mind me watching him for free here today.

Every time I watch this video I am more and more overwhelmed by the artistic scope and the magnitude of the musical virtuosity and genius of this great pianist. Unlike many of the other greats, HOROWTIZ seems to be much more in direct, almost organic connection with the instrument in the sense that it does not seem to matter what key he is playing in, how many sharps or flats or complicated fingering and phrasing...it all just goes a s smoothly and as naturally as if they were an extension of each other.
Even more impressive to me is the size of his repertoire and the pieces he has memorized and which he can play at will, jumping in at any point of the composition. He really does know them all, as he says " the UPS AND DOWNS "...
Finally, and not least important is the sheer PHYSICAL dimension of these performances.
Here is a man who is so frail and weak looking and who can barley speak, let alone walk and yet when he sits down and plays these incredibly difficult compositions for hours and hours without getting exhausted and he seems to be as powerful as any young pianist and his ENDURANCE is incredible....IT'S ALL HARD TO UNDERSTAND

Horowitz had everything a musician needs: courage
Just . . . beautiful! One cannot but pause and remember the life's work of dedication, love of music, and the billions of lives music touch through an individual as Vladimir Horowitz. Our mist appears for each one of us for a moment in time . . . and then is gone. This is an example about life, that should teach all us to make the most of the resources with which we have been blessed -- then give from ourselves the very best we have to offer, before there is no more time left to give, and our stay on earth is gone . . . .
I absolutely loved the "Au Bord d'une Source"! Shimmering, effortless beauty. I was at a recital of Radu Lupu and Murray Perahia in 1986. At intermission as I made my way up the aisle to the lobby, I looked down and there sat Wanda Toscanini Horowitz in a prime aisle seat. Their playing was magical and so was the brief eye contact with Mrs. Horowitz. I had to wonder where the maestro was, but his spirit was there for me.
to play that piece that way you need his mastery coupled with his musical maturity.. It's a fantastic recording

The Liszt Etude was extraordinary. You have just seen an up and personal look at the great man. How great is that?

I actually know an excellent classical concert level pianist (I mean not saying he's as good as this guy) but his neighbours HATE him practicing
There are just no superlatives which are adequate to describe HOROWITZ, the greatest pianist of all time
I have listened to and compared the performances of all the " great " pianists for whom there are recordings or videos and they are all wonderful because anyone who can get to the level of performing these piano busters has to be a phenomenal virtuoso but none has the COMPLETE package that HOROWITZ has.
No matter how old he gets, he's still the best.
oh what a character! i love him haha. but when he smiles at the end of the beautiful liszt... you know that he is truly in love with music.
I miss him, and I miss those days. I miss the virtuosos of that era, and I miss their free interpretation and brilliant creativity. Like this, I sometimes miss the same times when I was not born.

I have heard a lot of his Scarlatti and Chopin and a lot of Liszt and wonder why his 'Au Bord d'une Source' performance here has not received as much acclaim.
It is the most haunting performance ever.

Look at those finger movements and listen to the muscial emotions. The instrument is a part of his body. He was a Good.

Brilliant short piano performances……nuance and touch…..like Argerich stated in an interview, “ Horowitz was the best lover a piano could have…..” Such an evocative sentiment from another inimitable Artist, who exuded ‘heart & soul’ Music.

HOROWITZ did not die...he just went back to his home planet because there is no way this guy was an ordinary human being

I am sorry...but RUBENSTEIN was terribly OVER-RATED in my not so humble opinion. He was famous for making many mistakes and even a non expert can detect those mistakes in many of his performances because they are so flagrant.
Besides there being no comparison in general to HOROWITZ in the issues of overall technical virtuosity or interpretation, neither RUBENSTEIN nor any of the great pianists could play OCTAVES like HOROWITZ...it is so obvious even in Chopin's BLACK NOTE etude that it is not even open to debate...it is and has always been an overwhelming consensus in the musical community.
@@leonmaliniak - Actually, Byron Janis' reading of those octaves is possibly even "better" (whatever that means)... in any case, this isn't a competition... If you never experienced a Rubinstein recital in person, then you can't really comment... he was wonderful... that said, the most overwhelming pianist I ever heard live was, naturally, Horowitz...
