Sticking to my trusty A7III, honestly. I was hoping for more, but honestly it looks solid. I think I'll wait another couple of years to upgrade, then hopefully snag a used A7IV for a lower price.
Hey Matt. I think I'm in the same shoes as you as I own Two a7siii. I'm thinking if it's worth it to buy this a7IV to replace my a7III as my backup third camera during ceremonies. Are you planning to get an a7IV in addition to your Two a7SIIIs for weddings?
I don't know why people are acting like super 35 mode is a shortcoming or a downgrade in quality. Super 35 is often preferable for run and gun / doc work because it's the right balance between shallow DoF and a enough depth to keep things reasonably in focus. This is especially crucial when shooting over-cranked because when you buzz focus, it's much more noticeable because it's out of focus 2.5x longer. Super 35 is the standard look for motion pictures, Full Frame is a specialty look. No shade on you if that's the look you need for your work but there are lots of us video professionals out here that WANT Super 35 4k 10 bit and are glad this camera is finally out.
@@sosomelodies659 yes.. but thats a double hit. And there are cameras which produce very details 1080p images. But not the a7iv. You stuck with 4k24 and 4k60 crop. If 1080p would be better like on a Panasonic Camera, that wouldn't be an issue. Lots of Shows are still shot in 1080p by the way.
I came straight here to get the info. Didn't feel like wasting time on other channels. I feel like they don't hit on the points I care about. Matt didn't disappoint. Thanks!
For anyone who is rocking the A7siii, this is a very good b-cam. But those who are still starting out or work as a second shooter, I believe this is the perfect system for them.
The 4K 60fps crop is two fold. 1) It helps limit overheating. That 7k to 4k heats things up by a lot. So that helps. 2) As you said, it is to keep people wanting the A7s III. They aren't going to make a camera that is better than their recent release, for $1000 less.
I shoot 4k60p with my xt3/xt4 and i am very happy with the image quality. The only reason i was waited so long a7iv is full frame 4k60p. I am buying 2 canon r6's.
sold my a7iii after having it for nearly 3 years, was waiting for this release to see what the a7iv offers but looks like im going with the R6 as well.
The A7iv has a dual gain sensor, contrary to what you said. Another video showed at what iso it switched to the 2nd gain in s-log3, I don't remember the value but it was way below 12800. Why 4k60 is cropped? Very easy answer: sensor readout speed. The sensor cannot read the uncropped 16:9 region 60 times per second, it can do it like 40 times per second only, which is too slow, that's why there's a crop. The A7siii with its lower MP has a much faster readout speed which is why it can do 4k60 and even 4k120 with a small 1.1x crop (because again it's not fast enough to read 4k120 without the crop).
Then they shouldn't have ever released the FX3. A7IV can have 4k 60fps no crop and A7SIII still would have so much more to offer in terms of video specific features. In my view that is a miss, badly examined and lazy approach. Which will only cost Sony potential buyers looking at competition offerings. So they did not protect A7SIII nor FX3, they probably will bleed sales of A7SIII, FX3 and A7IV as a result. At video side of things A7IV not only has some cool new features, but also some key missing things and I am not including the crop in 4k 60fps, so A7SIII is well distinguished for it to be safe from A7IV sales. But that's just my opinion...
@@DanasAnis Sony A7siii Pros. 4K 60fps 120fps Full Frame Larger Codecs. Less Rolling shutter Sony A7IV Pros 7k Over sampled Sensor Super 35 mode in video Newer Auto Focus System Focus Breathing Correction Bluetooth Transfer 33MP Photos I guess subjectively a7siii is great for video But the a74 is better all around camera.
Many new features of A7IV can be added to A7SIII via firmware update, leaving only 33mgpx sensor with its photography capabilities as an advantage and the super 35mm option for filming. Autofocus capabilities might be a tiny bit better than on A7SIII, but I don't think it is going to be revolutionary better, both cameras share lots of same dna, oversampling from 7k is okay, but 4k 120fps full sensor, 1080p at 240fps, better codecs alone make A7SIII stand out. Better viewfinder and screen also makes it stand out. Different market aims I think, there is no reason not to include 4k 60fps FF in A7IV. If it's too much to handle 33megalixels, pixel binning could be a acceptable compromise. Which makes A7SIII stand out, 4k 60fps ff no pixel binning. It's a miss and not a great decision. And this is a new camera, it would be strange if it didn't have improvements in areas like autofocus etc. Anyway, sales will be big, because it's a great camera overall, however they could have been even greater numbers... A7IV makes more confused reactions than excitment. Somehow A7III positioned it's line into hybrid shooters league's choice because of how balanced and great overall it was for the time, which I guess introduced bigger expectations from people (which were not that big, basically they could have introduced same sony a7iii with 4k 60fps ff and 10 bits, some autofocus updates, vari angle screen, that's all...) and Sony marketing guys decided not to use the moment it seems... leaving an open window.
The A74 covers a lot of what I wanted. I come from a A6400 and love the sigma trio lenses. But I wanted a crop camera with 4K 60. The A74 covers this plus has the full frame option as well. And the rolling shutter improves at crop mode. And I get IBIS. I’m sold. Going to ass a sigma 24-70 and 70-200 and maybe the sigma 14-24
I loved this perspective on the A7iv, for me, as a hybrid shooter, it's a definite purchase and my pre-order is a done deal. I really appreciated your approach and how you utilised the limitations to work for you without compromising your standard. Great stuff.
And if you have a used aps-c and have a bunch of aps-c lenses, This is a nice way to step up to Full Frame. At least you get 4K/60, and in the future one can update the lenses one by one. I will sure do this.
At the end of the day, you buy a full frame to shoot in full frame. If going APSC lenses is the train of thought then might as well wait for the next APSC 4k60 camera at a cheaper price
Yeah I am the same! I wanted S cine tone, flip screen and 4:2:2 more than anything so I still pre ordered. But I have an a7siii so I knew I was 90% gonna get this cam if it got these features
I dont know why but Matt voice and the way he explain makes me wants to listen more, makes me easier to understand and focus. Lol very very good review.
it's definitely a deal breaker for me, I assumed the higher pixel count may be too much for the single processor but yeah, I was geared up to buy this and I won't now, possibly as a B cam
I rock an A7S III as my A Cam, and this announcement is just about what I expected. I still have one of the A6300s that I used to dual-wield for weddings, and this A7IV is the final step to replace that APS-C system. It’s got great video and photo features, and while it’s a bummer that it can’t do 4k60 in full-frame, that’s why I have the A7SIII anyway. The A7IV will be an excellent choice for me as a B Cam with adequate video capabilities (remember, still 10-bit 4:2:2) and better photography capabilities (which the A7S III leaves a lot to be desired on).
@@Donbros How about this a7IV as a replacement C camera over a7iii? I currently own Two a7siii as my A and B camera and using a7iii as my C camera, 6400 as my D cam. Do you think this is worth replacing a7iii as a C camera?
Regarding the 4k60 crop. The issue is rolling shutter on that 33mp sensor, which is evident in video on all modes besides 4k60. I reckon they'd have to beef up the processor to accommodate a 33mp 4k60 without too much compromise. I personally wished they stay at 24mp or even 20mp (like the R6), and do 4k60 full frame
On the subject of overheating: There is a difference between 4k60p with downscaling processing of 33 megapixels vs. 12 megapixels like on the a7sIII. There is definitely more heat generated here, even if it is the same cooling system.
I pre-ordered the A7iv. So, in case you're wondering its $2,499. And I'm not discouraged by the crop in 4K 60p because I don't use it that often. I understand why they did the crop, and it's - like you said - they did it to protect the A7Siii. Who knows, maybe they'll change that in a firmware update. But, it still doesn't bother me. I shoot mostly narrative film, so slow motion isn't a major concern for me. So, in the end, the A7iv will be quite capable for my needs. And at $1,000 less than the A7Siii, I'd say it's a no brainer.
Just one query, is the video cropped in 1080... 120 fps too? Also does the real time eye auto focus work in 120 fps? Would be a great help if you can letme know. Would accordingly decide if I want to buy this camera :) Thanks
The crop is definitely a deal breaker for shooting run and gun. It is as if you're still using an apsc camera, not to mention having to carry or even buy extra lenses.
Whoa. Not sure anyone else has gone as hard at Sony for the 4K60p crop as you did here 👏🏼 Their lower MP and higher MP both have it in full frame. I appreciate your unique review highlighting all the features included and also those lacking. A7R IV user here sticking with my plan to add either an A7S III or FX3 for video. Dang it, Sony.
Great Review.. very helpful We are in 2024, I got the A7iv once announced in 2021..never regret or think to get A7siii some reasons..! After a Year I Bought the second A7iv to have Exactly the same Performance and prespactive Never Regret even with Crop Factor, which is agood thing to have in many satuations & Seems better than Full Frame..! Low light beast.. ton of options and function better that A7siii..! A7iv is Top Hybrid Cam.. Such a break dealer for Videos and Stills
Best a7 IV review for wedding filmmakers - thanks Matt. Was thinking of switching over from Canon but the 4k60 crop killed it for me 😥. Already experiencing the crop on the 5D4 switching between 1080 and 4k and it’s not something I want again in my next cam. The compression changes going to a wider lens so closeups may not be as flattering (i.e. 50mm vs. 35mm for bridal prep or couple portraits).
Great video Matt. I heard in another video, that the camera has a dual gain iso, but the result is the same like you said, because the second step is lower than at the SIII at ISO 3200.
I'm a Sony user since DSLT alpha cameras and the only time I saw a firmware update bringing improved stuff was on a6000 the XAVC-S codec coming after a huge demand from people. So I have my doubts, unless people REALLY ask for it.
The lights are on: Finally after 3 years the epic A7 series has a new face. The party started at Canon, especially in the design and development department of the R6. They do not want to forget cannibalism with the Canon R, and the 1.5 crop. Nicon took a deep breath, Fuji and Panasonic started sly smiles ...
Good video Matt. Too bad about 4K at 60 fps in apsc. In all the videos on the presentation of this camera they are commenting on it. I do not believe that it is not an artificial limitation not to step on the A7SIII. The latter already records at 120fps in 4K. I would agree with other colleagues to make some kind of boycott and press for them to implement 4K at 60fps in fullframe even in a paid firmware update. They can't tease us like this.
It crops because: 1) not enough processing power for k to 4k in 4k60 2) there is not enough resolution in 16:9 part of the sensor for pixel binning, which the a1 has (There needs to be 33.2mp in the 16:9 part for it to be able to pixel bin) 3)its specifically 1.5x because now apsc lenses can be used.
Who is Matt? The awesome dude who convinced me to cancel my preorder for the ZV-E1 and order the A7iv instead. As a hybrid shooter who often needs to use extensive cropping for wildlife and macro shots, I'm much more comfortable with this option. Thanks, Matt!
As a company that does both wedding videography & photography....you have to ask yourself if it isn't easier to just buy A7s3's (I currently have 1) and then when your second shooter needs to shoot some photos, just shoot them at the 12Megapixels and in post up-res the entire batch with Adobe's super resolution.
4k 60 from a 33mp sensor requires it to be oversampled from 7k which may explain the crop considering the extra processing it has to do compared to the A7SIII
The crop is definitely a deal breaker for me (I have the a7siii) but this would be such a great camera for someone starting out or anyone doing both photo and video
The Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 lens is awesome and PERFECT for this camera if you're shooing 4k60. That's 25mm-105mm f2.8 in that 4k60p crop mode. Get it. Cheap yet great quality lens. Nice work Matt.
@@DanCThorpe Well, grab a 1.4 lens for some beauty shots for sure if you'd like, but as an all around lens for a wedding, 2.8 is plenty and that zoom range is pretty solid. Just my opinion. :) Everyone has their own style so there's no "one size fits all" lens but it's okay to find the beauty in the background...its there.
@@AllBecauseHeAsked fair enough. I guess then why buy a full frame camera body. It's just an odd decision on Sony part. They won't be getting my money this time around anyway.
When talking about SD cards, you told all modes are recordable to a V30 SD card. the camera can record up to 600mbps or 75Mbps. V30 cards only guarantee up to 30Mbps min writing speed, only V90 cards guarantee consistent performance above 75Mbps (90Mbps min)
Dude, I can tell just by looking at your mimics that you can be quite annoying for people around you in your every day life. Probably sarcastic like hell, perfectionist, critical and (maybe?) sometimes hysterical a little bit, BUT - your knowledge, you eloquence and your ability to make easy to follow synthesis out of shit loads of information - well, these are quite amazing. You use the exact amount of words you need to keep it relevant, and nothing else. I don't care how much of a pain in the neck you are in your every day life, right here where I need it, you F-ing nailed it. Thanks a lot! This is World Class teaching skill.
I think the crop is there for 4K60 because they didn't use a stacked sensor, the BSI sensor doesn't have that fast of a readout (also why the rolling shutter is worse). Stacked sensors are more expensive to make, so to keep the costs down they had to go with BSI.
Using that S35 Crop allows for using cheaper APS-C glass too. I have a Tamron 17-70 2.8 for Sony E APS-C, so about 24-105 F4 equivalent on Full Frame, meaning I wouldn't even need to re-invest in more epensive wider angle glass to compensate for the crop.
Thanks for the awesome review. I actually like the crop at 4k 60p (or at least I don't mind it at all) because I use tamron 17-28mm and the crop would give me extra zoom (yes I can do that in editing). My only concern is the rolling shutter which I had with the a7iii (just have to be careful when shooting some clips). Thanks again 🙏🏻
Matty! We NEED a video editor's perspective on the M1 Pro/Max! Can we trust it as our main editing workstation, or do we need to have a dedicated desktop?
The battery life is better on the A7 IV most likely due to the lower resolution display and EVF. It's unlikely that anything else in the camera is causing a noticeable battery life difference during video recording due to the fact that they share the same processor and other components. Unless you were recording to SD on the A7 IV and CFExpress A on the A7sIII. Great video! Very informative! Let's hope these software features come to A7s III users!
Hello Matt. Thank you for the review. I own a Sony FX-3 and wanted something for a B cam. This seems to hit all the spots being 10 bit and price is easier then another FX3 or A7S III.
Matt, I think I'm going back to Sony with the A7iv. I don't mind the 1.5 crop, and the other features sound like they're made to order for me. Thanks so much for such a good review. Maybe I'll by buying your LUTs. The colors look stellar, but I hate to give up my Fuji XH2s colors. They're wonderful.
Honestly, most of the video made me feel the A7IV was the right choice, right up until the end. Prices here in Canada, currently with a special the A7IV is about 40% cheaper than the A7SIII. I need this camera for a film project, so functionality is of paramount importance, but budget is also an important consideration. Most of the film will be shot outdoors, scenic places, think travel documentary. This being the case, I would really appreciate an opinion on which camera to go for. Thanks!
Bought the A7IV a couple of days ago, after returning the strange non flash photo complicate to handle FX3. I was on the fence for the A7IV and A7sIII. And still wasn't sure about my buy. Here in Canada jumping to the A7sIII is a 1800$ tax in more difference. With this video you answered all my questioning and my doubts about the IV. So I'm going to keep it. Thanks a lot for your hard work with those videos, you're helping may people to make the right choices.
Sharing same body does come with some pros! Same battery grip, same cage.. And you can always put mark on top which camera is which, like when you have two same cameras. Anyway, nice review man! Thumbs up!
Great review. I agreed with your dislike of the cropped 4K 60 as the main thing to dislike. But it was interesting to hear how you felt about it when shooting with the 16-35mm f2.8. I own the A1 and A7s III and am hoping Sony updates the firmware to bring us all the nice updates in here like focus breathing compensation, focus mapping, eye detect for animals and birds in video, etc. I really liked the switch between stills, video and S&Q. One other thing I'd like Sony to do would be Shutter Angle to make it easier to switch frame rates. I do have presets for those for higher frame rates, but if you switch between them, you lose your manual exposure settings.
Sony a7iv is great for a pro photography camera not reliable as a pro video camera because of overheating. I had two Sony a7iv cameras. I sold one a7iv for the Sony a7siii and I do not regret it one bit. I do weddings and commercial work regardless of fps bit rate the Sony a7iv will over heat in 4k in any setting on average after 18+ minutes of continuous shooting in 75 degree + weather. That's with the sony a7iv update, high temp on, all doors open including battery door and screen flipped open. Great camera for a casual video user who films short clips not continuous in 4k.
I can't wait to get rid of my a7iii's and start hybrid shooting properly again! once we got the a7s3 I don't like matching footage with my a7iiis for weddings it's going to be nice to be able to get back to that!
Overheating is a hardware issues, and this how you can fix it in software: - change the critical temperature - use more efficient algorithms - use slower, but more energy efficient CPU instructions
It's an artificial limit having the 4k 60 crop. It's made me consider the a7siii. Now I am thinking of keeping my a7iii. Will probably end up with 2x A7iv though :)
I don't think it is. The sensor has a 26ms readout speed so can't do 4k60 without a crop (or line skipping but perhaps the sensor isn't capable of that).
@@FantabMedia if they made that faster it would make rolling shutter better too. All most people wanted was those two things + 10 bit video which at least we got. This being said my current plan is to get two.
I'm very happy about the memory card news you gave - going V30s . I thoroughly enjoyed this review. Can't wait to pick up the A7IV and upgrade from my A7C.
Did you consider a Speed booster for the cropmode for 4k60fps? Now you will have the original field of view and the Aperture of your full frame lenses.
@@77dris there are speedboosters with Autofocus. The only downside is that you can only adapt DSLR lenses. So Nikon-F/Canon-EF/Sony-A lenses only. Not usable with your native E-mount lenses.
Perfect! We were just waiting for this camera for our 3rd angle for weddings that would compliment our A7SIIIs. With this video & Gerald Undone’s review we will be putting in my first preorder ever!
Thank you 4 the video, it was really good! I just heard that the a7iv frame I ordered has arrived and I can pick it up. At the same time, I ordered a 16-35 GM 2.8 lens and I’m relieved to hear that the crop doesn’t look so bad with that lens. Thanks again! Channel subscribed.
Ive pre ordered and am so amped ! I’m okay with getting a new wide angle g master lense; I’m getting super high quality video and photo at just under 5,ooo Look most people still don’t have displays that are 120 FPS. This is easily the best choice with the touch screen and compensation for focus breathing.. literally etc. if sony gives a firmware update that rivals good for them for keeping a loyal client base… if they don’t…. Just means they know how good their new cameras are always going to be. Tech is moving faster in progression that’s not recent news; we have to just appreciate where tech is going and how we have this all in the palm of our hand…. SD cards v30 lmao this is a no brainer
I think the sensor just has a really slow readout. Look how severe the rolling shutter is at 24p. No way it could capture a full sensor readout at 60p and it not be a complete jello fest. The crop is a compromise on a sensor that itself is a compromise
In my humble opinion the 4K 60 crop doesn’t bother me because my a7IV won’t be my A cam. I already own an FX3 aka my main work horse and a7Siii as my B cam so this camera will be amazing as a C cam or even B cam and again I’m a person that loves super 35 crop I use it all the time so even as an A cam the crop won’t bother me and to your point Matt with a 16-35 even a 20mm 1.8 G prime the crop is not an issue.
Matt, your reviews are the best ones, I've decided to buy a7 IV few times watching this video, also decided few times that I'd rather get a second a7sIII. Thanks. XD
Thank you Matt for the honest and complete review, as usual ! This A7IV is definitely a welcome upgrade for hybrid shooters like me, especially those who don't use 4k60 that often.
20:28 If you really wanted to, you could just get APS-C lenses and only shot in super 35 cropped mode for video. This would save a lot of weight and cost, and yield very high quality video results. For the best quality stills, you would still want the full-frame lenses, but this might be an acceptable alternative.
I've spent 3 years investing in FF lenses. For a FF system. Now I've got to invest in APS-C lenses and pay more for the body? Better to just take the whole lot down to park Cameras and trade in so I can go back to Canon.
Cropped 4K 60 is a shame, but they had to protect the a7siii somehow. I'm not sure just removing 4K 120 would be enough, considering the camera other than that is pretty similar. Worst rolling shutter, but that never bothered me as I film pretty static. Not sure why every expects all the functionality of an A1 and A7Siii on a much cheaper camera?
In my opinion it would be better if instead of 33MP it would be again at 24MP (like a7iii) and have 4K 60p (for videoshooters), a more bright and detailed LCD screen (for both videoshooters and photographers) and faster fps burst speeds (for photographers). Sensors are quite expensive and I believe that would be possible as a tradeoff. But the marketing of MPs has made lots of other people and manufacturers considering that you can't have a new camera upgrade in lineup without a new sensor. Also I don't understand why to protect the a7Siii. It's a previous model in line and it's supposed to have better quality materials to qualify for it's price. If they manage to put out a better camera at a lower cost, they simply should do it and drop also the cost of the previous camera. Then release a7Siv at the current a7Siii's price. Even Appla does that and Apple isn't exactly pure. It's not ethical to hold back things that the camera is capable to do and we certainly shouldn't accept those things.
Thats a clear change of strategy and one that didn't serve Canon that well. They used to be all about getting as many people into the eco-system as possible by offering up as much as possible. I'd be more interested in keeping the prosumer level customers happy than worrying about whether some prospective A7sIII customers decide to go for the AvIV instead. Hopefully they continue offering up new bodies every 3 years because the A7 5 looks like it will be my next upgrade.
I love my R6, but the last three times I’ve used it, the overheating caused limitations for me. Crop or not, I gotta say the lack of overheating issues makes this camera really tempting for me to make the switch to Sony 🤔 But then there’s gear to sell, lenses to buy, and lots more money to be made. 😆 Maybe I need to up my prices. 😂🤣
@@Visions-yh3qk definitely on my purchase list. I’ve always loved Canon colors and still think they’re #1 in auto focus, so I think I’ll invest in a Ninja and more RF glass for now. Who knows about a year from now though. Things change quickly in the camera gear world these days, so you never know what’s coming next!
@@Jsmelser0321 it's heaven sent for the R6. I was considering switching until I purchased an Atomos. Also helps with post as theres no need to create proxies. Etc.
I shot 4k60 on my R6 all the time. Because I never know when I need to slow mo down my family videos. Second because the rolling shutter drops to 15ms and Im ok with pixel binning. Now I do have A74 on pre order because I find the Sony lens options are better and less expensive compared to the Canon RF native lenses. I hate adaptors so I sold all my EF lenses.
Good video! The only thing I don't like about the A74 is the rolling shutter, due to the slower sensor readout. If I can find an A7S3, I'll get that for the 120 frames@4k, since I mainly get it for video...
So Matt, Awesome review!! But honestly, the focus "breathing part" of the review and the reference to witchcraft literally made me laugh out loud! Thank you for this video! Well Done!
Thanks for this detailed review, the most fruitful one on TH-cam. I really dissapointed when I see 4K 60p on crop. I 100% agree your reasoning. I was shooting 4K 60p with my Osmo pocket and Mi Mix3 smartphone, which were generally not sufficient to use. In addition I waited this camera for more than a year. But your 16-35mm shots are very convincing. Thank you in advance because I feel I see the light from end of tunnel. I think I will go for it with a 16-35mm. Best regards
Well, don't know about "artificial limitation". It's also quite cheaper than the A1 and the A7SIII, with more pixels to manage and more cpu load. So it kinda makes sense to limit 60 fps to a crop mode. I guess it could allow it without crop, but then it would be overheating...
19:00 I wouldn't be surprised if canon add custom video settings to the R6 to steal some of the thunder from the A74. This would make the R6 my choice for my social media content work.
The 4K60 full frame omission is likely due to the same reason you can record any mode to SD cards....the sensor is slow and the camera has only a single bionz chip. That's why rolling shutter is so poor, why no 4K60 full frame, and why SD cards will work in any mode. From beginning to end it just doesn't push as much data through as quickly as A7Siii or A1.
I'm behind on the times with this camera but am considering getting one. This review really helped me to decide if I want to be my b-cam/backup cam for b-roll and ceremony. While it is a bummer that 4k60 is cropped I'm not really too upset by it. I think this will be a great camera that I can use for quite a bit mixed with my R6 and help me to decide if I want to go full Sony or continue sticking with Canon. Matt, you really hit some key notes here and really helped to weigh in on my decision. Thanks!
I'm personally not bothered by the cropped 4K60. My current A7III can't to 4K60 *at all* ... and Sony has the A7SIII which offers full-frame 4K60 *and* 120. Plus even more video-centric features. This camera is in the middle. It's an all-arounder. Everything is a balance. Maybe the A7V will have all these features in 2024. But I wonder what the A7SIV will have by then?!?!? 😎
Not that I have the money, but if I did I'd go for the IV over the SIII just because of the photo capabilities. Photography is mostly a hobby for me, but one I love, so having a camera that's solid with both is key for me. That's why I have an A7III now. If it was just about video, yeah I'd get the SIII. But at the end of the day I want that extra photo resolution more than non-cropped high frame-rate.
😁 Are you getting the a7 IV?!
P.S. This video and all the a7 IV footage was colored with my presets! Get them here: whoismatt.com/luts
Probably the a7s3 only. Cz i already own a @7m3.
To expensive for what it is
Sticking to my trusty A7III, honestly.
I have 3 a7iii’s right now. Put one up for sale and pre-ordered the a7iv an hour after the announcement video
I'm glad some people are put off by the crop 4k 60p and won't be getting one. It puts my pre-order that much further ahead.
I agree. Not a huge deal. I was bothered way more by the fact that you can’t go APSC mode on the A7Siii.
I see a bigger Problem in 120fps is in only 8bit 4:2:0
@@silklion7375 That's 1080p right? Not really issue because going to 1080 you're already talking a hit on image quality.
@@sosomelodies659 anyway. I just try to turn you off so ur not stealing my pre order 😉
Exactly. I am thinking of purchasing this camera as a bcam of my Fx3 specially for interviews. It will be so easy to match them!
Thanks! This is EXACTLY my use-case!
The 4K 60fps crop is two fold. 1) It helps limit overheating. That 7k to 4k heats things up by a lot. So that helps. 2) As you said, it is to keep people wanting the A7s III. They aren't going to make a camera that is better than their recent release, for $1000 less.
Sony cripple hammer at their best.
the crop is a dealbreaker, they could have put other limitations in place if they were worried about a7siii sales
Would trade 33 MP to 24 MP for 4k60 FF instantly

I shoot 4k60p with my xt3/xt4 and i am very happy with the image quality. The only reason i was waited so long a7iv is full frame 4k60p. I am buying 2 canon r6's.
Good thing they protected their a7siii sales by making you switch to canon. Big brain time!
sold my a7iii after having it for nearly 3 years, was waiting for this release to see what the a7iv offers but looks like im going with the R6 as well.
Sony protecting its A7siii clearly but this is a great entry-level hybrid camera! Time to download some Matt Luts! thanks

I guess subjectively a7siii is great for video
But the a74 is better all around camera.
@@DanasAnis it wont cost them nothing. It's geared to people like me that mostly take just pictures and occasionally video.
@@craigman7262 I think that's what people are missing
Matt, I did it 🤣 finally switched from fuji and don't regrate at all.
Crop doesnt bother me one bit... wow i love this cam and finally 10bit 4:2:2!!!
Yeah I am the same! I wanted S cine tone, flip screen and 4:2:2 more than anything so I still pre ordered. But I have an a7siii so I knew I was 90% gonna get this cam if it got these features
On the 4K 60p in full frame I agree with you 100% !!!
I think like 90% sony a7siii user thinks of this as potential b cam haha, i spam this everywhere too XD
the crop is whats preventing me from picking it up as a main cam

Focus breathing compensation only works with a few lenses. The a74 HAS dual iso!
On the subject of overheating: There is a difference between 4k60p with downscaling processing of 33 megapixels vs. 12 megapixels like on the a7sIII. There is definitely more heat generated here, even if it is the same cooling system.
but in essence, will it look better on the a7IV assuming we have similar focal lengths?
I pre-ordered the A7iv. So, in case you're wondering its $2,499. And I'm not discouraged by the crop in 4K 60p because I don't use it that often. I understand why they did the crop, and it's - like you said - they did it to protect the A7Siii. Who knows, maybe they'll change that in a firmware update. But, it still doesn't bother me. I shoot mostly narrative film, so slow motion isn't a major concern for me. So, in the end, the A7iv will be quite capable for my needs. And at $1,000 less than the A7Siii, I'd say it's a no brainer.
People crying too much. Just buy wider angle lenses
Idk how you sold me on a 4K60 crop but you did. Using a 16-35 zoom would give me the perfect zoom range on a gimbal! Thanks Matt!

Love your positive happy attitude when you review or make such videos. It's such a pleasure. Thank you Matt... once again :)
As an a7siii user, I miss the ability to crop in 4k, have to change lenses more
@@rattoh I use longer zoom lenses like 24-105 and 28-200. Even f/4 is enough in low light.

I agree with everything you talked about related to shotting at 4k 60fps with cropped mode!!! 😩😩😩
Just buy 12-24 and stop crying
almost wrote this camera off but you saved it in the end about the crop.. honestly you can still do some slo mo which is still good
Can you make a video on all the lenses you use for wedding film making ?
Great video Matt. I heard in another video, that the camera has a dual gain iso, but the result is the same like you said, because the second step is lower than at the SIII at ISO 3200.
I imagine the focus breathing compensation will come to the a7siii with a firmware update.
Really hope so!
hoping for this as well, coz i have the 35GM and Im having thoughts to let got of it due to its focus breathing
Unless it depends on having a higher-res sensor for the crop (and hopefully continued oversampling while it's on)?
I'm a Sony user since DSLT alpha cameras and the only time I saw a firmware update bringing improved stuff was on a6000 the XAVC-S codec coming after a huge demand from people. So I have my doubts, unless people REALLY ask for it.
If I were a betting man, and I am, I bet it comes with the A7SIV
It crops because:
1) not enough processing power for k to 4k in 4k60
2) there is not enough resolution in 16:9 part of the sensor for pixel binning, which the a1 has
(There needs to be 33.2mp in the 16:9 part for it to be able to pixel bin)
3)its specifically 1.5x because now apsc lenses can be used.
😂🤷♂️

HOT COMMENTER ALERT
I think the Crop factor in 4k 60fps mode is because of CPU limitations. It simply can't compute 7k resolution into 60fps.
Then don't make it 7K.
4k 60 from a 33mp sensor requires it to be oversampled from 7k which may explain the crop considering the extra processing it has to do compared to the A7SIII
That was my thought too.
The crop is definitely a deal breaker for me (I have the a7siii) but this would be such a great camera for someone starting out or anyone doing both photo and video
If you already have the a7siii you're set, but if you need a B or C cam I think it would work great
The Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 lens is awesome and PERFECT for this camera if you're shooing 4k60. That's 25mm-105mm f2.8 in that 4k60p crop mode. Get it. Cheap yet great quality lens. Nice work Matt.
2.8's too slow. You'd want T1.4 on a crop sensor.
@@DanCThorpe They "could've" enabled full frame 4k60 on this one but I'm guessing they didn't to keep the A7siii relevant. Oh well.
@@AllBecauseHeAsked Yeah I guess the problem for me the Canon R6 can do 4k 60 with a negligible crop. They've matched the price but not the specs.
This is my concern too. I don't think what he says in the video about the SD cards is accurate
Sony is smart, they know that those who got the a7siii will get the a7iv for the pictures making these two cameras the perfect combo!!
Yep that's the silver lining
But when you do it in editing you crop probably to HD. But when it cropped in the sensor you still get 4K footage.
Just to say that i am the happiest man on earth with this Sony A7 IV ! I can shoot a video with a bird coming toward me! ☀️👍. Greetings from France .
Crop shouldn’t be a problem though to be honest. Yes it limits view but it doesn’t board off or anything when loaded into software for editing.
I hope sony will try update to record 4k/60 in full frame or at least 1.2x crop, not more. 1,5x is too much.
I can't wait to get rid of my a7iii's and start hybrid shooting properly again! once we got the a7s3 I don't like matching footage with my a7iiis for weddings it's going to be nice to be able to get back to that!
Overheating is a hardware issues, and this how you can fix it in software:
- change the critical temperature
- use more efficient algorithms
- use slower, but more energy efficient CPU instructions
It's an artificial limit having the 4k 60 crop. It's made me consider the a7siii. Now I am thinking of keeping my a7iii. Will probably end up with 2x A7iv though :)
😂 such a rollercoaster of decisions
I don't think it is. The sensor has a 26ms readout speed so can't do 4k60 without a crop (or line skipping but perhaps the sensor isn't capable of that).
@@FantabMedia if they made that faster it would make rolling shutter better too. All most people wanted was those two things + 10 bit video which at least we got. This being said my current plan is to get two.
I'm very happy about the memory card news you gave - going V30s . I thoroughly enjoyed this review. Can't wait to pick up the A7IV and upgrade from my A7C.
I guess the 4K 60 crop just isn’t that big of deal to me, but I do understand the complaint.
Did you consider a Speed booster for the cropmode for 4k60fps? Now you will have the original field of view and the Aperture of your full frame lenses.
Do speed boosters work with the AF? Any downsides?
Great review. I bought the 20mm 1.8 to help compensate for the super 35 crop
What about 30 minutes recording time limit ?
May be i missed that part of your video.
Great review 👍
Thanks! No limit
The panasonic lumix s5 offers more at a cheaper price. I know people will say auto focus but to be honest its not bad at all .
@@perseusarkouda Totally agree. Would have been happy with the same 24mp sensor.
I love my R6, but the last three times I’ve used it, the overheating caused limitations for me. Crop or not, I gotta say the lack of overheating issues makes this camera really tempting for me to make the switch to Sony 🤔
But then there’s gear to sell, lenses to buy, and lots more money to be made. 😆 Maybe I need to up my prices. 😂🤣
Atomos Ninja?
I love videos when they start with the conclusion. Thank you you earned a like and a sub ❤
Good video!
The only thing I don't like about the A74 is the rolling shutter, due to the slower sensor readout.
If I can find an A7S3, I'll get that for the 120 frames@4k, since I mainly get it for video...
Brilliant review. Super excited about this camera.
So I can record in 4k 60fps with 10 bit 4:2:2 and still use v30 SD cards? Im glad to hear that
Great video! I have yet to find anywhere a review on the 1080p on the a7iv, I wonder if the 1080p is a big step up from the a7iii 1080p?
Also wondering this. Siii 1080 is oversampled from 4k, does the A7iv do this?! Would really like to know.
want this details as well, does 1080p with 10bit 422 ?
Me too. I would like to know. All the reviewers focuses on 4k specs. But didnt show whether 1080 also have 4:2:2 10-bit.
This would make the R6 my choice for my social media content work.
yea i want a no crop 4K60
and a apsc posibility to switch on and off
The 4K60 full frame omission is likely due to the same reason you can record any mode to SD cards....the sensor is slow and the camera has only a single bionz chip.
Thanks for letting me know about keeping the shoe cover on. :)
