  • Day 1 in Nakhon Phanom • MY NEW FAVOURITE THAI ...
Today I'm in Nakhon Phanom, a sleepy little town in Thailand's northeast region of Isan. As you all know, I like to get off the beaten track in Bangkok and I like to do exactly the same when I'm travelling Thailand. Nakhon Phanom is about as close as you can get to "unseen Thailand', there really aren't many western visitors here.
Nakhon Phanom is full of Thai-Vietnamese food and I took full advantage. I ate a fair bit over two days here and most of it was was amazing.
    On day two I ate:
Guay Jub Yuan / Khao Piak Sen and Kai Grata (egg pan) at An Jao อั๋นจ๋าว:
    goo.gl/maps/ZP...
Kuay Teow Nuea / Pho at Pa Kaew Noodle ก๋วยเตี๋ยวป้าแก้ว:
    goo.gl/maps/sB...
Latte at 76a The Space 76เอ เดอะ สเปซ:
    g.page/76ATheS...
    The S Villas Hotel:
    goo.gl/maps/gr...
Nakhon Phanom is absolutely beautiful, I'd say it's my new favourite Thai town. I would highly recommend The S Villas hotel to stay in, great service and a lovely place (I get no commission).

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this TH-cam channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

I love traditional Guay Jub Nam Kon w/ brown porky broth, triangular rice noodle that curls into a tube, crunchy pork, and soft boiled egg. The flavor is complex and incredible. Nakhon Phanom is beautiful. I'll definitely put it on my list when I visit Thailand.

I am amazed of the areas and food you are showing us. One thing that would help me is when you are talking to the locals in their language. It would be nice if there were some subtitles so I can follow with your conversation. Just a suggestion. But either way, I am enjoying your adventures around Thailand. Keep up the good work.

Gary, I just found your channel mate and its brilliant. You got great presenter skills and narration skills. I am going to Nakon Phanom in a few months, around November the same time as you. What would have been seriously fantastic Gary, would have been a little sticky note or text in some form; when you say the name of the dish, bowl, food, or ingredient. It would be a great aid for learners and tourists alike but also, I think it would boost your production value. I actually dont know why you havent been scooped up by some media network; truly great to watch.

Mui Gio (in Thai) is called Gio Lua in North Vietnam and Cha Lua in South Vietnam ( don`t mix up with Cha Gio which is deep fried spring roll in South Vietnam and Nem Ran in North Vietnam ) . There are many varieties of Gio or Cha in Vietnam , such as Gio Bi ( with pork-rind ) , Gio Bo (with beef) , Gio Thu ( with pork ear , nose and tongue ) , Cha Chiên ( deep fried ) , Cha Quê ( with cinnamon ) , Cha Com ( with young sticky rice ) , Cha Thi La ( with dill ) , etc... There is also the Nem Chua made of fermented ground pork mixed with pork-rind , salt , sugar , garlic , pepper and roasted rice flour

Day 1 of this two day video is the first of your videos I have watched (I am waffling on moving from Khon Kaen to Nakhon Phanom)... and I enjoyed both of them. Food of course is one of the most cultural things you can do and it is very important to Thai life - so having videos include as much food as other sights probably would be a reasonable mix (as this is the first videos I have watched I don't have enough to compare it to). I enjoyed this two day video set.

Hey there I have been watching your Videos for a while now and it takes me back to the Mark Wiens early days. You are doing a fabulous Job. Good on you, your channel is picking up momentum. 5 stars. I have one Question though. I will be coming out to Thailand fairly soon. It seems to me that everything you pay for is with a QR code now. Is this line pay? In other words can you still use cash everywhere or is it transitioning to digital currency? Can you use the QR payment methode without a Thai Bank account? Thanks for the information.

    • @theroamingcook
      @theroamingcook  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hey Paul, thanks so much, I really appreciate the support. The QR code I use is with a Thai banking app so you would have to have a Thai bank account to use it but absolutely everywhere still takes cash. I just loose whatever money I walk around with so have given up carrying it!

I particularly enjoyed your video around Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market. I was there before Covid hit. I especially enjoy the B- Roll you shoot. It really sets the scene. Would love to see even more of that in your videos. Anyway keep up the the good work. It's much appreciated.

I mostly shoot social media content for big companies and organisations out here in Austria where I live, but have dabbled in professional documentary production aswell.
I am impressed with you being able to speak Thai btw. That's quite an achievement being able to pick that up. I can tell it helps no end every time you are connecting with the local vendors. Looking forward to your next video.

Amazing video. You captured the place so well. When you mentioned the “spiritual” feel of the place that summed it up for me. Your description and feeling for the place is exactly how I feel when I’m there.
You spoke about the amount of Thais speaking English. There is an ever growing ex pat community in the area and at weekends with the Walking street market it’s is buzzing after dark.
I walk every evening along that cycle route and there is so much going on with exercise groups and street music.
    Great drone footage as well.
I’m buzzing just getting the vibe from your video and can’t wait to move over in July and sample those delicious food places.

Hi Gary, it is impressive and quaint Nakorn Panom indeed. Yes, it would be nice if Helen would agree to move to Nakorn Panom with you. The cost of rent and food would be much less than BKK that is for sure. BTW, real man wears pink, and you wear it well!🤩. P-Joi said BKK is flooding all the time, before she said everyone should come to Nakorn Panom. Also, I heard someone repeating after you said something in Thai, remember that they do not make fun of you, rather they find you endearing for your effort to learn the language. 😀
