When the PRETENDERS ruled the WORLD. NOBODY has ever come close…………. This band in their original form were UNTOUCHABLE, and the music from The Pretenders during this particular era STILL shadows much of the music that came after to this day. All of their music is excellent, and I especially love the music that the original members made. It was a true tragedy what happened to two of them.
Thanks for your comments. I'm very fortunate that my Fridays shows have been so well preserved on Betamax tapes, these past 27 to 28 years! I *really* enjoy watching drummer Martin Chambers! He puts his 'everything' into his performances! ;-)
In one or two years on the air, Fridays had the Pretenders, the Clash, Graham Parker and the Rumour and others. SNL sucks by comparison. They think Halsey is pretty neat.
Oh man; so thrilling when the chemistry in a band just lines up . Not a trace of session musician in there ; fire and brimstone all the way. Oh mercy ..
Just an outstanding performance! Martin Chambers absolutely nailed it. He was stoked! The Pretenders first album was the first one I ever bought - still have that precious vinyl! It's a wonder I didn't wear it out, I listened to it so many times. Chambers' drumming made me want to be a drummer. Forty years later I still aspire to be a drummer when I grow up!
I FEEL YA THERE! I just wanted to be Chrissie! I wrote a few songs nobody is ever gonna hear, plus lost my guitar when I moved and didn't bother to get another one!
This band had something really special, they were all great players, they had a musical chemistry and shit they looked cool as f..k doing it. RIP James and Pete😢
Worth watching solely for the drumming of Martin Chambers. Even if it times he sounds like an irate child pushing a drumkit down a flight of stairs. Its a large reason why I loved the band. Gloriously haphazard and yet still in charge. Love this clip .
Fridays had some top notch music talent. They were able to book some acts during the show's brief run that were certainly tuning in to watch. And thanks to TH-cam there is the ability to keep watching some of those performances now.
This is my favorite Pretender's songs! It has that Stones Jumping Jack Flash rhythm to it. It rocks! Love how Chrissie weaves the tale of the pathetic wayward soul.
annoying commenter She broke Farndons heart...however, we weren't there, of course. Takes two...and also ,I think this applies too, D ont kick someone when they are down, but, perspective. Alas, addiction stinks for all involved. Huge fucking loss there of Pete and Jimmy Scott.😑😶😐
Great vid by a great band. Saw them in Jan '81 at Southeastern Mass University. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Saw them a few times later on with the different lineups, but they all pale in comparison. How many bands put out an album where almost all the songs are on the radio at one time or another and then follow it up with another great album of the same kind of material. Only the Cars comes to mind. Awesome quality vid Lottoman, better than most versions of this song I've seen.
I followed another hot-as-a-firecracker band (totally different genre), and then one member passed away of cancer. Why does someone have to die alla time?! Grrr! Life, it's such a downer so much of the time! Anyway, I love this and can't believe it came from a Betamax!
thanks for the info. zzzzzzz some of these comments. I tell you, I was a fan from day one. I have all their vinyl, that I still listen to on my turntable that I bought in 1978. These are great albums and no one will ever be able to duplicate this.
FreedomZealot: The banana may be: “A sugar-heavy snack...a, quick, energy boost, to see you through the set.”-Number 6 of “17 Drummer’s Gig-Bag Essentials”.
Besides the audio not being that great (but for the age of the recording who can complain),,,this is by far the best version of this song on youtube. Also,,,"does misery love company?".
Saw them in '81 in Columbus Ohio with this same line-up. within a year the bassist and lead guitarist would both be dead. Best concert I ever saw. Glad Chrissie and Martin Chambers continued on, but it's never been the same
I remember the day I graduated from the 8th grade and when we came home my neighbor next door came over and was like "Honeyman is dead!" I was floored cos' the Pretenders II album was such a big part of that time in our lives.
Yeah, Honeymoon Scott seemed like a unique guitarist at that time. I don't think I've heard another guitarist duplicate his sound. His timing was just slightly different somehow.
That's the truth. Not the same at all. I don't resent Chrissie for carrying on but she has never been part of a group in that way since, and I still think she has more bad karma than she lets on over what happened. Hinduism doesn't provide for the expiation of guilt in this life. I think part of what drives her militant animal rights stuff is the same reason so many porn stars were big into it in the day when porn was a big industry, it's an attempt to buy indulgences, as it were. Chrissie has some heavy thinking to do in her remaining years, that's all I have to say. I don't wish her ill.
+Wamgo C Interesting observation. I'm not sure I agree though. I think her career has been stellar and I'm not sure what bad karma you think she may have had (except perhaps in some relationships). But she seems rather happy with her life, particularly at present where she's been touring quite a lot lately. I do miss the original lineup for sure. I liked Adam Seymour / Andy Hobson as well.
Chef Ron Johnson: The banana, may be: “A sugar-heavy snack...a, quick, energy boost, to see you through the set.”-Number 6 of “17 Drummer’s Gig-Bag Essentials”.
JHS was so guitar-fashionable with that Erlewine Strat. Very trendy in 1981. A lot of people thought he was the leader and Chris was his Derek St. Holmes, so to speak.
Well I doubt that as he was not the main songwriter but he certainly was a big influence on the band's sound and arrangements. He also got Peter Farndon fired and then managed somehow to kill himself within 2 days of doing so.
And then there were/are two. Chrissy Hynde and Martin Chambers. Sole x2 survivors. Non Pretenders. *Don't shoot junk. Not worth the price... of your Life. AMJ metaltomotown
Andy the invited season opener host - hijacked the song Intro with some rant: "he instead gave a rambling introduction that veered off into a speech about the dangers of drug use, and then told viewers watching at home that he’d talked too long and the show needed to go to commercial.". Back for song #2 Message of Love Andy is the perfect Mr. TV, Johnny couldn't do it better.
HERE is the original Andy Kaufman INTRO - see the miserably shitty video of "the other guys" . th-cam.com/video/pvG1POCCIQQ/w-d-xo.html. Compare this to SNL stage for the bands then - playing in a pit the audience 10 feet above and the monstrous cameras all locked down.
This is getting near the time Farndon was becoming hard to deal with due to his heroin use. They hated this look he had and he did it on purpose. You an see how out of place he looks.
Michael Wilson That's purely your opinion re Farndon's 'look' being out of place. Even Hynde admits she'd been an absolute cunt to him, and reduced him to tears (often)!
Hynde looks so dead cool leading her group of feral cats. I saw this line up three times and sure do miss the energy.

The sound mixer didn't do them any favors that night. But, hey, it was still the Pretenders.
Yeah it would have been nice to hear the vocals .

As a 15-year-old kid, I recorded this on cheap audio tape and I listened to it constantly, just for Martin Chambers' drumming. Intense.
In one or two years on the air, Fridays had the Pretenders, the Clash, Graham Parker and the Rumour and others.
SNL sucks by comparison. They think Halsey is pretty neat.
Are you converting all your tapes to digital?
Oh man; so thrilling when the chemistry in a band just lines up . Not a trace of session musician in there ; fire and brimstone all the way. Oh mercy ..
MOST OF THEM ARE DEAD
THE RONA VIRUS GOT EM
@@5291982 heroin and coke got pete and jimmy. Martin and chrissie still with us. Dinlo
When these four hit the stage, it was pure magic.
@@5291982 Well two of them are dead , so I don't know about " most " and they died long before rona

I really got into in this band, and nobody else I knew liked them. The heartache when they fell apart after only 2 albums hurt!
I still remember watching this episode of Friday's when it came out. I wore that cassette tape out. Pretenders II is bananas!
The banana!! lol I thought Martin was gonna play the whole song with it in his mouth! Man, they are so tight!!
Rock and roll 101, kids. The Real Deal here, moxy masterclass.
Pete's Hamer Cruise bass sounds absolutely awesome - the Ampeg SVT's are the perfect vehicle for it...
Worth watching solely for the drumming of Martin Chambers. Even if it times he sounds like an irate child pushing a drumkit down a flight of stairs. Its a large reason why I loved the band. Gloriously haphazard and yet still in charge. Love this clip .
GaryO never heard that analogy before ... he’s great, keeping time and beating the hell out of the drums.
Honeyman And The Chime Chord! Simply The Best!🔥
Live 1981..the real deal..at their prime..within 18 months JH-S and Pete were lost forever..never got the edginess back.
I saw this on tv that night... the performance seems to get better each time
Fridays had some top notch music talent. They were able to book some acts during the show's brief run that were certainly tuning in to watch. And thanks to TH-cam there is the ability to keep watching some of those performances now.
I watched it for the music more than the sketch comedy, for sure.
That show was ahead of its time - brilliant in many ways.
This is fucking awesome
one of the best bands EVER
This is my favorite Pretender's songs! It has that Stones Jumping Jack Flash rhythm to it. It rocks! Love how Chrissie weaves the tale of the pathetic wayward soul.
Well, it is about herself, screwing Ray Davies behind his wife's back....

This proves they were the best live rock band in the world in '81.
They're in the pipe, 5 X 5.
I was just singing this yesterday. 😂
Still fuckin epic!!
Their best song, in my opinion.
The epitome of New Wave Music, the Hybrid mix of Punk and Disco. ✌🏻
I remember watching Fridays, B 52s Pretenders, The Clash
+Ken Gibbens That was the best ! ! !
Oh man, gotta watch the 52's next. Thanx!!
Chrissie just radiates coolness.

(Then) & DEVO, Elvis C, The B-52’s, Joe Jackson & ..,
Boston first album...
From September 18, 1981
Its so awesome they did this at their peak! RIP JHS & PF
kick ass rock en roll
Martin Chambers Masterpice. Drives the song.
The sound man could have turned up james' guitar during the hooks.
Pete looks like Johnny Thunders here

Immortal band, terrific performance -- but why on earth did Martin Chambers start the song with a banana in his mouth?
FreedomZealot: The banana may be: “A sugar-heavy snack...a, quick, energy boost, to see you through the set.”-Number 6 of “17 Drummer’s Gig-Bag Essentials”.
He was hungry.
Do your Rx homework, Bananas = k+ Potassium = Muscle cramps etc. Bests, dtf

there was a better version it got took down

@FreedomZealot- as I recall 1981, My best-guess as to the cause of Mr. Chambers banana-mouth incident would be "la Coca".
Holmes, so to speak.
good info. Would have been one of the greats of all time -- unfortunately...
Chrissie would go with that" she was always and is always about the band! X
Well I doubt that as he was not the main songwriter but he certainly was a big influence on the band's sound and arrangements. He also got Peter Farndon fired and then managed somehow to kill himself within 2 days of doing so.
When bands that played live were good
Yeah real musicians with no backing tracks or auto tune like today's idiots who talk to a beat and pose!
3:09 3:34 Sir Martin!!

Gawd, that live sound mix is the worst. Did Fridays have no idea what to expect from a kick-ass band like The Pretenders?

What brand of guitar is Jimmy playing??
Erlewine

Yeah Erlewine
Is this the show that Andy Kaufman screwed up their first song?
