Thanks for a professional critique of the lumi keys, as someone who is interested in getting to learn piano, it has been difficult to find a review from a real piano player. Thank tou
It was just amazing and wonderful to watch you play. Thanks for the review. Now I am sure that I didn't do a mistake by buying two of them. Me too I was thinking about 3. My Yamaha Clavinova CLP 320 is 88 keys. My Casio CT-S1 is 61. Now with two of these. I will get to 48. We will see. I just did not understand how to manage to play a sheet of music with just 24 keys. That's why I did bought two.
So the answer seems like no. I've been waiting for their official release but your opinion makes me think it might not be worth trying. Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts.
Thanks Ron. We were looking for a narrow key digital keyboard and Lumi keys are for a different market. We are developing a narrow key digital piano that should be on the market this fall. It will have a full 88 keys. Keep in touch at www.narrowkeys.com
Totally understand how you feel and happy to see a pianist's perspective on this. I just had to request a refund after receiving my LUMI keys today... I was so excited, but I'm very disappointed with how the keys feel. This is the reason I gave to ROLI: "I found the velocity of the keys to be really inconsistent. Sometimes when playing a scale, one note will be very loud, another will be very soft, sometimes notes will be missed all together. Especially if I am playing softer, there will be many notes missing. The key response is just disappointing, and without the basic feel of playing being solid, the keyboard doesn't feel worth the price tag at all. It looks beautiful and there are some cool features, but I can't stand having to adjust my playing so much to compensate for the velocity measurement being all over the place."
Hey! This is a great video! I'm not a pianist, I've been making electronic music as a hobby since I was a teenager and I'm 38 years old now. I've been learning classical piano for more than a year now and I also felt the same way on these keys. Especially when you play deep into the keys, it's too much effort to strike the key. I have a TH-cam channel (2.6K subs) and I wanted to know if you would be ok with me mentioning this video. I'm making a review as well with some of the updates of the app. I'll put a link so people can find you as well.
Thanks for this review! I've never played piano. I'm going to pick it up with my kids as a family thing. Even with the cons, as a person who's never played before, I think this might work for me and my kids. Thank you!
Would LOVE to see you review the French "Piano de Voyage" travel piano; it's built in 2-octave sections just like the Lumi, but not as a midi controller, looks like a real piano as far as key depth; 2 sections are ~ €629.
Thanks. That works when you are using the LUMI software. I was linking it to Garage Band to try it out as a small keyboard and that's when it ran into colour issues. The colours work great with the app.
Wow, this is so neat! Im 44 yrs old and would love to learn! Bucket list, piano is so beautiful. Single Mama to an Autistic 12 yr old boy. And wondering if it would be easier to teach myself this way. But at the sametime dont know if i should waste my money
YES!!! Omg I 100% agree!! I also have small hands and can only reach an octave. Btw, I have always dreamed of a portable keyboard that would come apart like this Lumi one does, if only it were weighted and thicker! I still might go for it though because I’m more of a singer/songwriter so I can probably get away with some chords being messy.
Excellent review and incredible talent. I'm jealous! I stopped my piano lessons young and regret it especially now with portable options like these where you can impress on the go :)
Im not sure if you are aware but the extra travel that the keys go down that takes more resistence is aftertouch. Aftertouch is used for synthesizers and as you press the key further down a parameter changes on the synthesizer.
Thanks for your thoughts. Yes, I am aware of aftertouch and what it does on a synth. The aftertouch on a grand piano is different than the aftertouch on a synth. The aftertouch on a LUMI is different from both. It is quite firm and this TH-cam was answering the question, Do the LUMI keys feel like a digital piano, and the answer is no, it doesn't.
I live in a very small house in London with my two sons (5yrs old) who I’d like to learn piano. Back in the US we have a Grand piano. Would you say this is a decent set up for them to learn on? I’m thinking of have them slide out from an IKEA console in the living room.
5 year old fingers are still pretty spongy and I think a traditional keyboard action would be a better option as these are pretty hard to push down and they have a very shallow depth. They feel very different than a grand piano.
Thanks. Yes, I have tried them. Really wanted 88 keys and only want the keys narrow not shorter. I did finally get a custom 88 digital narrow and I'm thrilled with it. www.playpianochordstoday.com/narrow
@@PlayPianoChords That is what I thought you would have said about Korg microKeys. The keys are too short. I am looking forward with much anticipation when your keyboards come out.
While this was first in development, I posted on PASK that it would the first ‘full length’ 5.5 digital, they then decided to brand it as such (DS 5.5). You’re welcome.
I like the critics, but its not as right as its supposed to be. I mean, ofc its not gonna feel as good as a real piano, because its a 4D touch keyboard. That means it has a certain pressure on the keys for when you play Synths on the keyboard, and not the original piano sound. Plus, for the other points that you mentioned, i think its mostly because its a small MIDI keyboard that explains all of the rest
I know you are not a synth player (assumption) but you should check out the Expensive E Osmose for their very expressive keys. They are different than a Piano ofcourse but they are bigger and have a newer technology keybed for classical expression in the digital sound world. Lumi: I believe you can adjust sensitivity in the app but don't quote me on that because I don't own any.
I do play synths and yes, they are changing in their sensitivity. The LUMI keys didn’t have a sensitivity issue, they had an issue where the key was almost impossible to push down at the back. Synth and piano keys need to be easy to push down at all points so their fulcrum was off. I tried the new LUMI keys recently at the NAMM show and there was a modest improvement but still not what you need to really play the keys.
Lumi is kind of a toy, albeit a lovely, colourful toy. I am about a zillion miles behind you in the piano playing stakes, but even I can tell that Lumi definitely doesn't replace a proper keyboard. But it does have its very positive points, and hopefully would encourage users to seek to be able to play properly,
As someone that is as desperate as you are for an AFFORDABLE DS5.5 DIGITAL Piano (Workstation/Synth) - Thank You for this review! PLEASE let us know if one ever becomes available.!
Thanks for your comment. I finally got the world's first digital narrow 88 key keyboard in 2021! I am working to create more as we are not alone in this wish. Here's a link to a page and a form if you want to keep up-to-date on availability. www.playpianochordstoday.com/narrow
Yes, and they are not pivoted which means as you move further back into the keys they get harder to push down and become impossible to push down at the back. Not like a piano key.
@@PlayPianoChords then it won't work with Moonlight Sonata 1st Movement because with the thumb and little finger on black keys, and the index, middle, or ring finger need to press down on another black key, then it is very close to the "felt" area (or is further back). Is it true it still has pivot but just the pivot length is very short? I wondered why they don't make it like "the whole key can go down" like on a computer keyboard, but probably that means there is only on or off, but no depth or speed
Thank you for this wonderful review. I have three kids who took classical piano for two years. Their teacher was overly strict with a lot of negative reinforcement but they learned a lot. They were only allowed to play classical songs and so after so much pressure and her telling them how awful they were they quit. Then covid happened. I feel really terrible that they might lose all they’ve learned. Do you think the lumi would be good for them to pick it back up again? We have a real piano in the house that they could switch back to. I think half the battle in getting more kids to play piano is for them to actually enjoy what they’re doing. They wanted to venture out to pop songs but they just could not. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Finding the right teacher for your kids can be a challenge. Some parents want a strict classical training for their kids and some (like yourself) want them to play more current tunes in addition to learning all the traditional stuff. I agree, everyone learns more when they are having fun! I don't know where you live but there are more good online options now because of Covid. I have no affiliation with LUMI and while they are fun, I am not sure if they would be more effective than just learning fun pop tunes on your regular piano. A portable keyboard is great for taking over to a friends house if you have a garage band but the LUMI keys are pretty specific to their software and don't function like a portable keyboard. You are welcome to check out my online piano chording classes. I like to teach pop, jazz and improv and find it also benefits classical learning in regards to ear, rhythm and form. play-piano-chords-today.teachable.com/courses There are more courses being uploaded all the time and they are suitable for teens and adults. I wish you and your kids the best of luck in their musical journey!
the engineering for keys that have similar weight along the key is very simple. make the key very long internally. Thats not really possible for a keyboard though, so they would have to come up with other siolutions which are not so simple
Thank you incredibly much for this review. I’m very interested in buying this item. I’m no concert pianist but I’m a 15 year old high school musician who plays a multitude of instruments along with piano. This video was a very informative and I realize this is no grand piano but still seems to be a fun gadget. I only have one question if you could get back to me or reply. What was the price you paid on kickstarter for the piano? I’m sure the pricing will be different when the product is released but I just want to have a rough idea. Thank you.
The answer to your question is a bit complicated because there were extras and shipping and currency exchange. I'm Canadian and it worked out to around $310 Canadian for each section including shipping and extras. It is rather fun!
I’m you’re ever curious about an amazing, expressional midi key controller, check out the Roli seaboard or seaboard block. It’s innovative like nothing else out there, but it’s not quite the same as playing a piano, despite the key layout... the possibilities are endless...
I got the pre-order of Lumi Keys 1 and it looks like they may have fixed your main problem with it. I'm really hoping so! From their website: playlumi.com/lumi-whats-new - Better key action Key action, or the way that keys respond when pressed and released, varied across a small number of Kickstarter Edition models. As part of the keyboard's internal redesign, we’ve made key action more consistent by stiffening the chassis, improving the sensor design and tightening key alignment tolerances. Key sensitivity also is even more precise than before.
Excellent review. I will definitely sign your petition. I never learned piano because I felt my hands were too small. Now I want to learn how and I’m not sure the best route to take. Does anyone have any suggestions for a self learning, portable beginner keyboard? I’m sure I made no sense. Lol anyway thank you for your review.
Very honest review. Portability is not the flagship for this one. The main reason for this MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) is that they has special features like (1) Pitch (when bending horizontally the key), (2) aftertouch (to increase the volumen for example, in strings), (3) hit the key to get a different sound and (4) release suddenly (like if it was a spring and let it jump) to get an inverted sound (reversely). roli.com/products/blocks/lumi-keys-studio-edition here you may see how it works
Yes, it is more of a creative keyboard than a traditional one. I realized that portability was not the flagship but for me, to have a portable DS5.5 keyboard would have been a dream come true for my small hands. Thanks for the link.
On the iPad, the keys in Cascade, Rainbow and Classic modes line up almost perfectly with the Lumi keys. However I don't have an iPad. If I hook my phone up to my 15 inch portable monitor do you think it will be as easy to follow despite the keys not lining up?
I think its a cool product but Roli should make 2 models, one for producers like this one and another for keyboardists with bigger keys and a thicker build
Eh, Gen 1 bugs. Common. But as it seems from all the videos I've watched on it, it's a GOOD start. Hopefully they're listening to people like you since you're definitely not the only person I've heard have issue with the lack of key travel.
I've never played piano before so I got this keyboard since I also wanted a portable instrument to carry around. My hands are pretty tiny too (Like 13yo level) so I thought it would be a good idea How does it feel like when you play it? Does it work without the app?
No, it needs an app (either LUMI or Garage Band or something like that) and a speaker to make a sound. My frustration is the action was unsatisfying. I have heard they have tweaked it but I needed more of a piano action than they were offering. I am using my LUMI keys as a silent practice keyboard mostly and I have worked with a team to create a custom 5.5 digital keyboard with 88 keys that has a lovely action. If it works out, we hope to make them available in 2021.
@@bcrmtavictoria8648 Oh okay, so do you know if you can put your own MIDI files into the app or is it only their own library of songs that you can play?
Thanks for the amazing video, this was exactly what I was trying to find out. Does lumi keys have a port where you can connect a sustain pedal? Are the keys velocity sensitive? I'm also wondering if I put 4 lumi keys together, if the 96 key thing would be super weird if I only need 88 :). I am a concert pianist and composer who travels internationally, and my dream is to fit my touring gear only in a carry on. I would absolutely love to not need to check my 88 key midi controller every time I travel, and then trying to get it in a taxi when it's too long for the trunk...and then lugging it through the airport....and then carrying it through cobblestone streets...etc etc. I absolutely love the idea of a midi controller that fits in a backpack, and I love the idea that you can connect multiple pieces. I totally agree we need a portable midi controller geared for concert pianists and professionals. It seems like lumi keys is almost there, it's so close. The requirements I have are: (1) playability, it needs to feel like I'm playing a real piano, not a toy (2) midi compatibility with all logic pro plugins including NI Kontakt, Spitfire Audio, etc. that works the same way a standard midi controller would work, plug and play, etc (3) keys need to be velocity sensitive (it's impossible to play deep emotional pieces when no matter how hard you hit the key, it's all one volume lol) (4) needs to accommodate sustain pedal, and ideally have a port for an additional expression pedal as well (5) 88 keys, ideally without extra octaves hanging off :) (6) portable enough to fit in a backpack or carry on. I'm so grateful the technology is almost there, I absolutely love the lights and the rainbow lighting. As you said, if they could just use the same technology to make one geared for professionals, that would be a dream come true. Thank you again for this video!
I agree, they are so close and I share all your keyboard desires! Yes the keys are somewhat velocity sensitive but they do not feel like a real piano or even a digital piano. No, they don't accommodate a sustain pedal. Sigh. I thought the idea of 96 keys was pretty amazing but think I'll stick with just the two sections for now. Good luck with everything!
@@PlayPianoChords Thanks, that's really helpful, really appreciate your reply! Hopefully they will come out with the perfect solution soon! You too, best wishes with everything!

That would be an a complication.
Pressing the round button should change the colour scheme for the piano (then you can have rainbow colours on both of them)
Why is she sooooooooooo cooooooool… she’s so cooooooooooool
Thank you for a really good and honest review. I will wait for Lumi keys version 2.0, and hope for a "love-love"!
Have you tried cme xkey air?
only 471 subs???????/// WTF you are so underated bruh.
Cheers
Really great review, but I have a question: what about the Yamaha NP12? That is a portable with smaller keys
The NP12 is a great keyboard but it still has a 6.5 inch octave not a 5.5 like the LUMI keys.
@@PlayPianoChords It's actually a bit smaller - around 6 inches
@@return4570 Wow!
I want the same!! Someone make one!
check out www.narrowkeys.com/
I see a rainbow and i want to paint it black!
I've never played piano before so I got this keyboard since I also wanted a portable instrument to carry around.
My hands are pretty tiny too (Like 13yo level) so I thought it would be a good idea
How does it feel like when you play it?
Does it work without the app?
No, it needs an app (either LUMI or Garage Band or something like that) and a speaker to make a sound. My frustration is the action was unsatisfying. I have heard they have tweaked it but I needed more of a piano action than they were offering. I am using my LUMI keys as a silent practice keyboard mostly and I have worked with a team to create a custom 5.5 digital keyboard with 88 keys that has a lovely action. If it works out, we hope to make them available in 2021.
@@PlayPianoChords That sounds so cool
I hope I get to see what your project looks like very soon!
I guess is too much to take for a pianist. Maybe in the future they are gonna make one with real piano feel. Nice vídeo, keep posting!! (-:
Is it compatible with Synthesia?
I haven't tried that because their own app is similar to it.
@@bcrmtavictoria8648 Oh okay, so do you know if you can put your own MIDI files into the app or is it only their own library of songs that you can play?
I really really appreciate your review, this saved me a lot of wasted time and money...
very nice video! however, does anyone notice anything... strange... about the thumbnail? i cant tell if my eyes are deceiving me
take a look at the keys
Can you check my video of me playing clair du lune
Where did you bought it??
Kickstarter. Check Sweetwater now or any other popular music equipment store
Try the seaboard block
Yes, that looked like fun!
Fantastic review, too bad they didn't get it right. Hope this won't mean the end of Roli.
You too, best wishes with everything!
i think they made it for portability killing the actual piano feel
Whats a piano and why should I care?
This lady is cool as shit!
