This 1986 Yugo GV was $3995 in 1986. Today I found out why it's still worth $1000 today, and why it's one of the most interesting cars for the money, by putting it on my lift.

I had two Yugas and both of you served me well! Only because of American interference with Yugoslavia and consequently its breakup I did not have the third of this great car! anyway, the car was virtually insurmountable from at least regular maintenance and served its purpose, brought you from point a to point b which was the point of the vehicle was cheap! whoever uses a car to get in the company, you should buy more expensive models of recognized brands! and Yugo was just a means of transport from point a to point b, so it was rude to crazy from him! Greetings!

@zlati70 My dad had one of those and pretty much I spent my childhood with it. The only time I liked it was when I saw it in "Die hard with a vengeance". It was funny.

So what I got out of this video is that that Yugo is worth $1000 because the radiator cap works. They were junk new, rusted out before the warranty expired and you couldn't get junk parts to replace the crap that was installed. Gotta love the communist mentality of the time.

About Yugo - that was my first car back in the 1994.... Actualy it is not that bad car at all, problem was with mass production or more accurate there was produced more cars than factory could make and normaly there is problem with quality because of it. Also they tryed to make it cheepest possible..... So we knew for flaws factory made and redone it in propper way.
A lots of people back than had a tuned Yugo's and the car is great for tuning, easy to work on and compatible with large number of other mostly Italian cars (Fiat, Lancia). We have start with body/chases and after some spot welding and making body harder (similar like any other sport cars) most important was to change suspension - to put some quality shocks and lower the car. Next was the brakes - depends of what engine you put in the car and that was not a big job... Even with propper tuned factory engines (you have to change pistons, crankshaft, engine head - or tune it by changing valves, work on intake, outake channels, etc etc... List is sure endless LOL) You got a propper sport car - great fun to drive, reminds me on go kart :D 1.1 factory engine was tuned from stock 55 to 65, 75 all to 100+ HP but that was heavy tuning and very expensive for sure. Great thing is that if you want to swap engine you dont need to do almost any mod and mostly people used 1.6 Fiat engines (Fiat Tipo) and now we have crossed a line and from "silly toy" we have a lots of power on a very light car. Some ppl had 2.0 engines too.... Next - transmission.... That factory one I had was very bad - gear ratios was very badly and easy fix was to take it from old models - short gears and 4 instead of 5 gears (Zastava 101) that is perfect for 1.1 engines. What I like about Yugo is fact there is no electronics in it (exept injection fuel system if you have one), no ABS, no any of that stuff - everything is in your hands, direct...... Symple, feeling that YOU drive car

Unibody construction is far more solid than a Suzuki SA310 (Forza) of that era. I like how the door is one solid piece instead of 2 welded pieces like in a Suzuki SA310.

The tubes are to slide the jack into. The car literally cannot fall off the jack. I don't know why all cars don't have this. Also you could jack up both wheels making it very easy to rotate the tires.

  • @ekspresija101
    @ekspresija101 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Things on the both sides that you saw under the car are for manual jack lift that should be somewhere in the original tool kit. When you are changing the tire you slide the axle of jack lift into one of those metal frames and you lift the car :)

We had 4 Yugo's for a while. Two that could be driven, one was just for spare parts (had two motors) those three were all white. The last one was red (dads favorite color!) it actually had an air conditioner, not sure what all had to be done to get it able to drive but just after it got fixed my sister hit a deer and totaled it... (I think the deer was fine) I learned to drive in one of them. When looking for parts you would have to reference fiat pretty often. Dad got pretty good at replacing starts motors. Much memories, I'll have to show this video to my dad. He wanted to weld a couple of them together and make a station wagon, called it a Wego.

You know what's interesting... I live in Serbia (where Yugo is made), I actually bought Yugo new 2008 and it looks almost exactly the same, no innovation (airbags, electric windows, etc.) just more bulky bumpers and some interior design if I can call it that way in 2008. But I have no bigger problems with it for full 8 years (every day driving, going to work staff like that).
Cheep for maintenance low fuel consumption, even upgrade it to LPG so it was sort of a green car. :)
It's a great video man, keep it up.

What a wonderful little car. I used to have one. I sort of regret selling it, but it was a nightmare to get parts for. But I love the design. Especially the fact that it has 2 doors. Just try and find a 2 door hatchback today. The Toyota Yaris 2 door may still exist. I replaced it with a 1972 Ford Pinto woodgrain wagon (2 doors, 4 speed) and it is a very fun car to drive, work on, and it gets a lot of attention. And most parts are still available for it, with the exception of body parts. Crash it and you are out of luck.
I love the fact that the Yugo has a carbureted engine, no airbags, no ABS, pretty much no electronics at all. I wish cars were still like that. I'm assuming that since somebody replaced the cat that it has to be emissions inspected? That's one neat thing about my Pinto, it is old enough to be exempt from emissions inspections, so I can do whatever I want with it. I already have a 2 barrel Weber on it. I'm seriously considering putting an old school 289 V8 in it.

The engine was close (mine had a 1300cc) the price was exactly the same (even though the Yugo was 7 years later), the front disk brakes, the spindly shifter, the spare tire location, the jacking ports.. pretty much everything you showed reminded me of the Fiat. • @robotube7361
      @robotube7361 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

People make fun of Yugos because of Americans. Yugo was the cheapest new car you can buy in USA - so naturally the jokes came with the territory.
The majority of the jokes are mythical and kinda stuck with it.
I OWNED A YUGO here in ex Yugoslavia and I can tell you there are several myths and Ill dispell them for you.
      1. Zastava cars were not UNRELIABLE. This was the greatest injustice made by american folklore.
People here drove 30-40 year yugos and still drive them. I welcome you to visit Serbia and see for yourself.Even today, 10 years after the last Yugo rolled out - people drive them.
2 .The quality of the materials used is defenetely not low. They sure made cuts everywhere and used only basic functional design - but that dashboard's plastic is one tough motherfucker.
      3. the assembly quality of the interrior was a DISASTER. This is where the jokes started, One can easilly make a case against Yugo just by presenting the interior.
The assembly of the chassis, drivetrain, engine and transmission was assembled with quality and security in mind.
Mind you, Yugo had to pass all sorts of US car safety standards in 1987 and it did it with flying colors.
All I can say about this car is - IT IS SPARTAN. BUT THEY CUT ONLY IN THE AREAS WHERE YOU CAN GO WITHOUT SOMETHING.
      4. Yugos rusted as every other car
Another thing that frustrated Americans was the small engine. This was maybe the crucial reason why they totally smeared the Yugo. Americans are used on 6-8 cylinder cars with lots of horsepower and now here is a car that goes from 0-60 mph in 10+ seconds.
What really pisses me off is they dont mention that ALL THAT SLOWNESS WAS ALREADY ADVERTIZED BY THE MAKER. THE ENGINE HAD 40 HORSEPOWER and stupid Americans expect to burn tires with it.
presonally, I think not even Americans can build a better car in that price range. The car was made mainly as a city, town car for students and not a limousine for comfort and long distances. This si whta lots of Americans need to know before approaching a Yugo and not to compare it with other cars.

Hey there, I don't know if anybody answered I can't read all the comments, but those things that you said are maybe for forklift or something, they are actually for a car jack that is usually where the spare tire is or in the trunk. Car jack for yugos has a square pole that you slide into the opening in order to lift yugo. Generally yugos for US were produced with better metal components, that is why you can shut the door that easily and there is no rust. That is not how I remember my yugo :) Interior and the rest were pretty much the same.

I worked on them back in the day. The scary little things had two really dangerous "features" that I found especially alarming:
    1. there is no subframe of any sort under that thing (go ahead and watch the video again). No frame! Zip! Nada!
    2. the brake system is not a split diagonal design.
Seventy-five percent of braking is done by the front wheels. In a split diagonal brake system, the left front brake is connected hydraulicly to the right rear, and the right front is connected to the left rear. In this way, if you lose hydraulic pressure to one front brake, you still have pressure to the other. With the Yugo, if you lose one front brake, you lose both. As anyone knows who has played around on wet streets with knee-brakes, having only the rear brakes operable makes for easy spin-outs.
There are few cars I refuse to drive. The Yugo is on that list.

So if you start doing these types of videos again, I think it's a great idea to have a drive segment in them.

My gf in high school had one that same color. It was an '87 that her dad bought her in '89, and it already had rust on it. I remember when they were introduced in America. Advertised as starting at $3,990, but it was closer to $5k when you add in the required destination charge and other junk charges. Hyundai was introduced that same year ('86) in the US and advertised their Excel for $4995. That extra grand got you a lot more of a car, though still crappy back then.

I had one in the late 80's. it had an electrical system that was unusual. Had to carry spare fuses that you could only get through Yugo dealers. Also it blew fuses all the time. Tires were hard to come by to and windshield wipers. I ended up swapping the whole windshield wiper assembly with one from a 86 Yugo (mine was 87 I think) because you could not find wiper blades to fit it. It was hard to start after it rained. Then a small engine fire sealed what I think was a crack in the coil cap and this problem disappeared.

Those slots are jacking points. Also there are 4 other jacking points. Jack is located below the spare tire. You could say that there were other models. Like one one automatic transmission, cabrio (that was top model and expensive model of that time), there were models with Electronic fuel injection,... Also, that buttons on the right side of the steering wheel are for rear and front fog lights, under the FM radio there were equalizer from German Grundig, etc.

11:15 as far as i know, not 100% sure, that metal part is reinforced part of car where you put lifter below it when you are on road, but your tire is flat.
So, you loosen tire screws a bit, put lifter below that part (depending on what side of car is flat tire), and you lift whole side of car (1 front and 1 back wheel) , than you replace flat tire with tire on engine bay, you lift down car back to road, and continue driving.
