    Love to see this, done this job as former Betamax technician from C20 to SLHF950 (AEP/Europe models). Recommended to replace the upperdrum (standard handeling for SonyNL) as well because it has changed a little bit in diameter. Without replacement upperdrum the new video heads can be decrease faster than normal. Recently i got Service Manuals from SL-HF100, SL-HF150 and the SL-HF950. (only AEP models).

      That is true. if only we could remanufacture new upper drums as I have quite a large inventory of new old stock head discs. For units I sell refurbished with new heads I'll use a new old stock upper drum A-6760-138-A. but these are getting pretty hard to find, and costly when you do find them.

      I have three of this model. One works fine, one is for parts with a good drum/head assembly, which I need to transfer into another machine. The motor inside the drum is breaking into pieces as it runs. I don't yet know how to remove the whole drum assembly.

    This is nice! I've always wondered how heads were made inside.

    No HiFi Heads for NTSC ? My SONY SL-HF950ES (PAL/SECAM) has 2 Video double Heads and 2 HiFi Heads.

    Great video as ever and really good to see how to repurpose heads for a different machine. Really liked the way you used the threads in the disk to remove it too - they're good to 'crack' the bond of the head disk too if need be.

    Wow! Still repairing Beta VCR's in 2019! At least you're using a good soldering iron!

    If the head disk becomes wobbly after replacement, does it need to be adjusted?

    • @betamaxrebeloutpost8945
      @betamaxrebeloutpost8945  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the disc is mounted flush to the spindle hub, there should be no excessive wobble.
      There is a slight inherent wobble on the rotary spindel in order for the head disc to acurately scan a track b track.

    Unfortunately this video has come nearly 20 years too late for me. My last surviving Betamax VCR gave up the ghost at the start of this new millennium. By then they had invented DVD recorders and a few years later DVD recorders with built-in hard drives, so I just replaced it with those instead for recording movies and shows off live television broadcasts. I have recorded DVD discs going back to 2002 and they still play back perfectly.

    • @betamaxrebeloutpost8945
      @betamaxrebeloutpost8945  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      as the machine is used, over time wear builds up on the head disc and the stationary upper drum. this causes poor picture quality to eventually no picture output at all. the head and upper drum will need to be replaced.

      @@josecarlosvilla4351 yes true that. so it's important to use these high end Betas as sparingly as possible. and you may be able to source heads from the HF150s, but i would double check that with the experts on the palsite.com

      Thanks! Yes a 2 or 3 head install is possible. found a hf900 many years ago with a substitute 2 head and it was working fine. pause special effects will have a noise line. just be sure the pg magnets on your new sub match the ones on the original head

      I just read you message, hope this weekend have time to experiment with the slhf900 video head transplant, the magnets have any polarity or just the number of it need to match, I have some Superbetas to take parts including a new old stock nec superbeta, but was damage in the shipping and this machine record B1S, so tha will be the first video head to inspect.

      @@jediurbanomxl the polarity is critical. you can't go by color (pink, yellow) i've seen them mixed. that's why I do a side by side comparison test of the pg magnets in the video. Best

    @jediurbanomxl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello, I just replace the video Head from one of the SL-HF750 that i own with the 2 heads version from a SL-hf360 donor, the playback on B1s is very grainy and in B/W but the BII abd BIII is quite sharp, very good color and noisless until we use the variable speed, but for play back is a good player, if I not repaired this way it still wil be beutiful paperweight.

      @@jediurbanomxl yes encompass (partstore.com) is the middle man to all of Sony's old parts stock inventory . they still have a lot but not for cheap Lol! last checked they had the entire drum assembly unit for the EDV-9000!
      NEC 4 head design is much different than Sony 4 head. the NEC 4 heads are spaced 90 degrees apart, whereas Sony the special effects heads are integrated into A and B heads.
