Here's Why Costco Really Checks Your Receipt Before You Leave

  • Some situations in life seem to exist for the sole purpose of making you feel guilty for no reason at all. Seeing a police car just driving behind you, or catching the teacher’s eye in an exam when you’re just looking around will do it. Sometimes, so will getting your receipt checked before you leave Costco.
After spending hours shopping, standing in massive queues, and wondering how to get everything back home, being stopped by a Costco employee who wants to check your receipt can feel odd, if not truly guilt-inducing.
Why do they do it? Here’s why Costco really checks your receipt before you leave.

Loss prevention. I had a time where the cashier forget to scan a case of water and I wasn’t paying attention. So I went to exit and the dude looked at my receipt and told me the water wasn’t on there and I had to go back and pay for it. Like I said. Loss prevention. And I would of came back to pay for it anyway.

@@toyotarizzle You have to have a membership to basically purchase anything in the store, but if it's like, a thing of toilet paper or prepackaged food, we checked it. Anything from the food court was exempt. It was really weird. It's like going to cedar point JUST for the pretzels. You have to buy a ticket to get in, even though all you want is the stuff from the food court. That's really the best example I can come up with. Like, I don't have a costco membership anymore, but my parents have a Sam's club membership. Sam's has got some great hot dogs, and I wish I could get into the store just for said hot dogs. Unfortunately, I'd have to bring the membership card to be able to get into the building.

There's two reasons they check your receipt at the door. First, because items are not bagged, they can't tell if you went through checkout or not, and they can't keep track of every person in the store. You could simply just walk out with the cart. Second, and I suspect this is the more important one, to mark your receipt. If receipts were not marked, you could walk back in within minutes, hand it to a second shopper with a second cart full of merchandise and show the same receipt again, and again, and again.

    • @oddsandendsofstuff

As a Costco fan, I came across this video and wanted to see if the reason I was told or heard elsewhere is what's here. This video is less than accurate on many counts. There is no way, one can scan the receipt and the card in few seconds to see if everything paid was in the cart. The reason I was told is to avoid 'whole cart' shoplifters. Two members fill their carts with identical items (with intent to pay for one of them only), one pays for and unloads and comes back with the receipt and tries to leave with the second cart! Bingo, the first exit trip has the receipt marked with a marker. So what they are doing at the exit is making your receipt void for another exit.

@@killer-gaming If an establishment inherently distrusts me and their other customers then something is definitely wrong with their procedure. If they have no reasonable suspicion nor probable cause that I have stolen something then they have no right to search me when I leave their establishment. I will admit that Costco is different. Part of your membership agreement allows them to check your items, it is like a contract you have signed with them. However I do not let other stores check my bags when I leave. I have never had a problem yet, I just tell them no thank you I am good. I asked if they have a reason to believe that I have stolen any items. They will always tell me no. Most stores have undercover asset protection, a plethora of video cameras, end theft deterrent tags on valuable easy to pilfer items. The world is based on trust and it should stay that way. If we distrust everybody that we run into what kind of world would this be? On the other hand stores that ask you to check your bags when you enter have been known to give your bags to someone else. It has happened to my mother. If a store does not trust me without a valid reason, why should I trust them? I do tend to shop only in stores that don't use the everybody is a thief policy. Other than that nobody accuses me of being a thief without repercussions. I have been ripped off, overcharged, shortchanged and outright cheated by certain establishments. They owe me the same amount of trust that I give to them. In addition any loss prevention expert will tell you that most losses are internal. In other words it is their own employees that are stealing from them. Not the public.

I worked at Costco for 12 years and a lot of it was checking receipts.
We pretty much check for mistakes from the cashier.
Cashiers have to work fast and keep numbers up to get people out as soon as possible. (I worked in one of the busiest Costco)
At least from my store, according to inventory (which is done twice a year) a lot of uncharged items where always at the bottom of the cart.
If it’s a small order, We look at the number of items on the receipt and count the items in the basket.
If it’s a large order we look at the bottom of the basket and look for those items in the receipt. (Bulky items that are usually at the bottom of the basket have code or stars next to it so it’s easy to to find on the receipt)
The employees who work the door are pretty good at catching overcharged or undercharged items.
The cashier is the one held responsible for making a mistake (depending on the situation)
Plus cashiers are paid more then an assistant.
Working at the door we never really looked for stolen items because uh Costco has some of the best cameras duh!
And they have a loss prevention team going on. (Again I’m only speaking for my store)
However we did occasionally catch stolen items while checking receipts.
I did have my lazy tired days where I failed to check receipts, I’d just mark em!

As an employee at the only costco in oklahoma, we are checking more for cashiers messing up then theft, we do catch theft there dont get me wrong but its not our primary reason. If you look to your left( right in some stores) as you walk out theres literally a sign saying why exactly we check it. As for "how long it takes" we are not matching each item to the reciept, theres a number at the bottom that tells us how many items there should be, and we count the buggy. if its abnormally sized (say 50-100) we just match the big items that would have gotten left in the cart at the register ( we find that these are the most common for cashiers to miss) to the reciept. If the cashier did their job right, there should be a section of your reciept that starts with "start of B.o.B (bottom of buggy) , and ends with "end of B.o.B." this also gives us the count of how many were scanned and makes it super easy for the exit door to find a mistake. Take a look at your reciept next time and youll see it all there, but i hope this cleared a bit up!

However, the time I bought a desktop PC you can be sure the door monitor made an extra effort to verify that the model on the receipt was the one in the cart. Same experience with other pricy items. Not in my area (yet,) but I've been to a few WalMarts where they did the same as Sam's Club. I strongly doubt Costco's or Sam's Club's checkouts are quite as benign as this video depicts.

Don't waste your time. Nothing to see here. Move along.
Costco checks their receipts for the exact reason your thinking.

How much did Costco pay you to make this BS video? They check the receipt to scare potential shoplifters. No question.

Was walking out of a BJ's a bit ago with a few relatively large purchases, an office chair and a flat screen were among them. The exit lady checked my receipt and quickly asked me "where was my other chair", I hadn't noticed and she thankfully did, that I had been mistakenly been charged for 2 chairs. I now look at checking in a whole new light. Btw pretty sure that was the only time the checkers found a discrepancy with my receipts in many years of big box shopping, including Cotsco 🙃

They are in fact an element of the loss prevention team.
I'm a former loss prevention agent.
Criminal teams consisting of checkers and their outside associates/friends/family members have been involved in high-value thefts.
They pass through the checkout and their cohort in crime working the register doesn't scan high value merchandise which is later sold.
