Culver’s walleye sandwich! Excellent but only available during Lent. I talked to a manager at the original store and fish availability is getting tougher! Water temps and fish populations vs demand arechallenges.
Once in a while, I talk myself into a McDonald's Fillet O' Fish sandwich because I hate myself after eating anything else on the menu. Unfortunately, as a truck driver, I am limited to wherever I can find a McDonald's at a truck stop. And once you are there, they've got you! $5.49 for sandwich only!!!
For me McDonald's is consistently the best fast food fish sandwich you can get, with consistency the key word, it is rare to get a cold or rubbery Filet-O-Fish from McDonald's, it is still amazing that it had to compete with a fried pineapple sandwich to get its place on Micky'Ds menu.
REMEMBER when the Burger King fish sandwich first came out? It was called The Whaler because it was so big, just like the reason the Whopper is called the Whopper because it's a whopper. Well along came the absolute idiots at Green Peace who claimed that Burger King called their fish sandwich the Whaler because they condoned the murder of whales and threatened a nationwide boycott of the restaurant chain unless they changed the name. Instead of telling Green Peace to kiss their ass, Burger King knuckled under and changed the name of the Whaler to the Big Fish. I was a Burger King Restaurant Manager at the time and remember it well.

A & W Canada occasionally offers their wild caught COD burger. It is incredible. Not minced but a real filet of fish topped with coleslaw on a bun. Nothing else comes close.
I'm 27 and I tried a Fillet O Fish for the first time today. It was really good! I liked the sauce in it. And it was hot and fresh from the fryer. But the McDonald's in that town is always on point 😁 Long John Silver's looks good though and Popeyes 😍
The filet O fish from McDonald’s is good. But they changed the way they prepared it over the years. I don’t eat McDonald’s any more but remember the filet O fish was deep fried in beef tallow not the shortening they use now. Also they used to serve it on an egg bun which gave the bun a somewhat yellowish color. Now they serve it on just a regular white bread bun. The original filet O fish was much better than today’s sandwich.
The Filet-O-Fish is just as good now as it was when it was cooked in the beef Tallow, the only problem is, the fish Patty itself is nearly half the size it was in the 80's and 90's making it not worth the price
As a regional Midwest chain, Culver’s has by far the best fish sandwich. 1. Culver’s 2. Arby’s 3. Hardee’s 4. McDonalds 5. BK I haven’t tried Popeyes or Long John Silvers as there aren’t any of those within 50 miles of me so...based on the ones I’ve tasted that is my ranking.

Totally agreed. They taste good but the lady saying it's $2 on here is definitely false. Most of the year they are like $3.59 or something like that and during Lent they are 2 for $5. That's the only time I get them is when they are on sale

The high price might be a way to afford to have it on the menu all year long. Most other fast food places that have a fish sandwich only serve it spring and summer (I guess that's when fish are in season and easy to get.)
It's $2 on Fridays during Lent. Otherwise it's $5.19 now! Total rip off!! It's so tiny. But all their food is a ripoff now. A Quarter Pounder with cheese is $5.69. What a joke. Unless there's a BOGO coupon I steer clear.

My local Arbys definitely has much better fish sandwiches than McDonald's and Burger King. Mashed doesn't know a good fast food fish sandwich. Too bad it's only available during lent. Even Wendy's has a good fish sandwich. I have yet to try a fish sandwich from Culvers, but with serving quality food, I would expect it to be even better than these 2.

MD's fish is $3.79, a ridiculous price, but when they are on sale, two for $4.00 or BOGO, I can't get enough! They will never compare with a homemade deep fried fish sandwich, they are just one of the best comfort foods to me, ever!

Depends on the fish they use, Pollock sometimes called, wild caught Alaskan whitefish, taste like licking the slime off the outside of the fish. If the sandwich isn't made with cod I am not eating it. Years ago McDonald's made their Filet-o-Fish with Cod today it is made from Pollock and it taste like crap.
Hands Down, Culvers cod fish sandwich is by far the best with thick chunks of battered cod, and plenty of tartar sauce and lettuce on a great bun. Obviously this reviewer doesn't much care for tartar sauce. But I love it. It makes or breaks the sandwich for me. It costs more, but you get what you pay for.
Culver's, a small but growing chain has a great fish sandwich, 🐟.. good fish, great fresh bun, not a lot of tartar sauce or toppings. Culver's has great service, clean & good consistant food quality. 👍
I'll admit I have a weakness for the Filet O Fish. It's not the best quality or the tastiest, but it isn't trying to be. It's just so simply satisfying. No fancy bun, no lettuce or tomato to get in the way. Just a generic fish patty on a bun and a slight taste of cheese to glue it together. A glob of tarter sauce keeps it from being dry. A classic sandwich. Wendy's Pacific Cod sandwich with its dill tarter sauce is probably my favorite but it's hardly ever available.

Fast food fish sandwiches are one of my favourite things to eat. I have had them at McDonald's, Wendy's, Arby's, Harvey's, A&W, Burger King, and Popeyes. I cannot get enough!!
Lol! Thought same. Drives me nuts can’t put on straight. Get a double filet forget it! And the worse part is that because comes with cheese the patties stick to the bread- impossible to straighten out on own unless within a few minutes before cheese melts. Ugh!
Everything at arby's is good, if it is fresh.Some stores are not good at it. I wonder if they know this is a big problem for the chain. It just might be the reason some stores do so much better than others.
When McDonald's fish ranks higher than anybody else's fish, then we have a serious issue concerning fish sandwiches ! BK's WHALER (RIP) WAS the best hands down. but being BK, they just had to screw it up too, along with the Whopper, which also USED be the best burger...PERIOD ! Your right about BK, they used to have the best burgers and now... I remember the "flame" broiled and fresh off and onto the bun. NOW … cook them, stick in a pan and toss one on a bun when you have an order. McDonalds is about the same, they cook lots of burgers, flop them in a pan and then " Q" the burger when they get an order ( microwave ). You may still be able to get a fresh made burger if you ask... buy maybe not
The whopper hasn't been a burger in over a decade. By law a burger used to need 33% meat to be called a burger. That's why they advertise them as a sandwich or the Whopper now. They never call them a burger anymore. Just like with McDonalds and their 100% beef advertising till they got caught
Agreed, I get a bk fish like 2 times a week from the same bk location (my store haha)and they almost always do me right(out of 100 sandwiches I have had 3 that were over cooked but still ok) it usually is fresh,hot crunchy and delicious(my experience at least? And when it's 2 for $5 like it is now...you can't beat it 😎👍👍
which is why I don't like them. If I order a combo with an extra fish sandwich I still feel like I need more to eat. It is value thing for me, the cost to get full has to come into the equation and the fish filet sucks in this regard.
Fillet o fish hands down is the best. Simple and delish! It's the only Sammie I order from McDonald's. Got to get extra tarter sauce though. Best tarter sauce to compared to everywhere else. If Arby's had that tarter sauce instead of that sweet crap, it would be a second choice.
The Filet-O-Fish is NOT under $2. They are 3.79 here, and every McDonalds I've ever been to charges between 3.29 and 3.99. It's literally one of the most expensive sandwiches on the menu. That said, it IS very tasty. :)
Back in the late 80’s or early 90’s downed about 8 White Castle fish sandwiches and a pint of cherry brandy before a Motley Crue concert and spent most of the night puking inside and outside the venue. Had a chick with me who actually went out with me again after that night. The best fast food fish sandwich is Long John Silvers.
I think it depends on how it's cooked and how 'fresh' it is. I had really good and bad Filet O Fish over the years. This goes for fries and burgers too. I've had good and bad Big Macs and Whoppers as well.
Wendy's use to have a fish sandwich so good that one day as I was pulling out of the car park and for what ever reason I placed the sandwich on the dash. As I was turning out of the car park the sandwich rolled out the window. I stopped my car got out and got my sandwich. It was just that good.👌
Wendy's only offers their fish sandwich during lent. So they stop offering it after Easter, or until they run out, whichever comes first. I prefer it over McDonald's and Burger King anyday. Wendy's is made with cod, whereas McDonalds and Burger King use Pollack, which is cheaper fish.
I was working in WI and there was a Culver's next to the hotel. They had a good fish sandwich that I ate multiple times. Unfortunately they are not as common around the country as the big guys.
Culver's and Rally's are both mentioned in other posts - and I agree. Culver's has the best fish sandwich for a more expensive price point, and Rally's has an amazingly good fish sandwich for the money - you can get it on their 4 for $3 meal (sandwich, fries, drink and apple pie), which is the best deal in fast food.
First of all I don't know where your McDonald's is, but mine here in San Diego never look like yours, it's half the size of the bun. One fish sandwich you forgot to rate was Jack-in-the-Box. Their fish fillet sandwich is A plus, the best I've eaten.
I work for Arby's. I personally don't like fish sandwiches but ours is alright. Advice: Don't order the fish sandwich through the drive-thru. Order it inside and ask for it to be made fresh. It takes five minutes to cook so you'll be waiting but it's so so so much better when it's fresh. Insanely better. If you want to know what I don't recommend is or were the Oreo Bites. Thankfully we got rid of them. Nasty little balls.
The key to ordering the Filet O Fish at McDs is to get it with tarter sauce only on the side. The sandwich comes out much better and isn’t a soggy mess. Dip the sandwich in the tartar sauce.
What sets the Filet-O-Fish apart is the quality of the fillet. A few years ago I watched a documentary about how McDonald's actually goes out to sea to catch the pollock fish that it uses. When I worked at McDonald’s in the late ‘80s we made all our Filet-O-Fish’s to order, because we didn’t sell that many of them. And they had lettuce on them
They were good then. Now they are terrible, no lettuce, only half a slice of cheese. I gave up on McDonald’s food about twenty years ago. Even my grandkids don’t want to eat there.

I was always torn between getting the Whaler or the Whopper, because I'd say that it USED to be the best hamburger in the industry....BY FAR ! @@meauxjeaux431 I worked right across the street from the first Burger King in Louisville Ky. and everyday at lunch the line was out the door and down the sidewalk trying to get in to buy the " Original Whopper " and the Whaler. I didn't have a problem deciding between the two because I bought one of each. I was 18 years old and 6-1 and a very skinny 175 pounds and I was always hungry. I ate that 4 or 5 times a week for lunch. As you pointed out there isn't much about the Whopper today that is original. It's amazing to me when they have something that tastes that good that they end up getting rid of it.

Another great sandwich they had was the BK Broiler in the late 80s. I worked there at the time. It was cooked in the same manner of the burgers through the broiler and was really good. not sure when they got rid of it. also, all food is served cold now. not sure why. we would serve it piping hot back in the day.
Fish nuggets on bread is the best fish sandwich? I believe the fish on the best fish sandwich should at least look like a piece of fish. Fillet-O-Fish is my favorite.
In Safeway and Walmart frozen food sections there's a brand of frozen batter-fried cod fillets called Young's. It's from England where they specialize in Fish and Chips. Once you try the cod fillets you will never be able to eat any other brand like Gorton's or Mrs. Pauls or any fast food. They are all inferior.

Culver's, a small but growing chain has a great fish sandwich, 🐟.. good fish, great fresh bun, not a lot of tartar sauce or toppings. Culver's has great service, clean & good consistant food quality. 👍
I'll admit I have a weakness for the Filet O Fish. It's not the best quality or the tastiest, but it isn't trying to be. It's just so simply satisfying. No fancy bun, no lettuce or tomato to get in the way. Just a generic fish patty on a bun and a slight taste of cheese to glue it together. A glob of tarter sauce keeps it from being dry. A classic sandwich. Wendy's Pacific Cod sandwich with its dill tarter sauce is probably my favorite but it's hardly ever available.
I’m all about the filet o fish! Yes it’s over priced but I love that the bun is steamed, it’s loaded with tarter sauce and NO LETTUCE!!! Why would you put lettuce on a fish sandwich for it to get hot and welted lol I defiantly want to try Arby’s too!
Fast food fish sandwiches are one of my favourite things to eat. I have had them at McDonald's, Wendy's, Arby's, Harvey's, A&W, Burger King, and Popeyes. I cannot get enough!!

Lol! Thought same. Drives me nuts can’t put on straight. Get a double filet forget it! And the worse part is that because comes with cheese the patties stick to the bread- impossible to straighten out on own unless within a few minutes before cheese melts. Ugh!

Everything at arby's is good, if it is fresh.Some stores are not good at it. I wonder if they know this is a big problem for the chain. It just might be the reason some stores do so much better than others.

When McDonald's fish ranks higher than anybody else's fish, then we have a serious issue concerning fish sandwiches ! BK's WHALER (RIP) WAS the best hands down. but being BK, they just had to screw it up too, along with the Whopper, which also USED be the best burger...PERIOD ! And BK wonders why their restaurants are empty, even during prime times.

Your right about BK, they used to have the best burgers and now... I remember the "flame" broiled and fresh off and onto the bun. NOW … cook them, stick in a pan and toss one on a bun when you have an order. McDonalds is about the same, they cook lots of burgers, flop them in a pan and then " Q" the burger when they get an order ( microwave ). You may still be able to get a fresh made burger if you ask... buy maybe not
The whopper hasn't been a burger in over a decade. By law a burger used to need 33% meat to be called a burger. That's why they advertise them as a sandwich or the Whopper now. They never call them a burger anymore. Just like with McDonalds and their 100% beef advertising till they got caught

Agreed, I get a bk fish like 2 times a week from the same bk location (my store haha)and they almost always do me right(out of 100 sandwiches I have had 3 that were over cooked but still ok) it usually is fresh,hot crunchy and delicious(my experience at least? And when it's 2 for $5 like it is now...you can't beat it 😎👍👍

which is why I don't like them. If I order a combo with an extra fish sandwich I still feel like I need more to eat. It is value thing for me, the cost to get full has to come into the equation and the fish filet sucks in this regard.
It's always been my favorite too ever since I was a kid. It was bigger back then and came wrapped in a blue file-o-fish wrapping.

Fillet o fish hands down is the best. Simple and delish! It's the only Sammie I order from McDonald's. Got to get extra tarter sauce though. Best tarter sauce to compared to everywhere else. If Arby's had that tarter sauce instead of that sweet crap, it would be a second choice.
The Filet-O-Fish is NOT under $2. They are 3.79 here, and every McDonalds I've ever been to charges between 3.29 and 3.99. It's literally one of the most expensive sandwiches on the menu. That said, it IS very tasty. :)

Back in the late 80’s or early 90’s downed about 8 White Castle fish sandwiches and a pint of cherry brandy before a Motley Crue concert and spent most of the night puking inside and outside the venue. Had a chick with me who actually went out with me again after that night. The best fast food fish sandwich is Long John Silvers.

I think it depends on how it's cooked and how 'fresh' it is. I had really good and bad Filet O Fish over the years. This goes for fries and burgers too. I've had good and bad Big Macs and Whoppers as well.
McDonalds in my experience is the most consistent fast food place.

Wendy's use to have a fish sandwich so good that one day as I was pulling out of the car park and for what ever reason I placed the sandwich on the dash. As I was turning out of the car park the sandwich rolled out the window. I stopped my car got out and got my sandwich. It was just that good.👌

Wendy's only offers their fish sandwich during lent. So they stop offering it after Easter, or until they run out, whichever comes first. I prefer it over McDonald's and Burger King anyday. Wendy's is made with cod, whereas McDonalds and Burger King use Pollack, which is cheaper fish.
I was working in WI and there was a Culver's next to the hotel. They had a good fish sandwich that I ate multiple times. Unfortunately they are not as common around the country as the big guys.
Yeah, pretty much just the Midwest. Their fish sandwich is great for a fast food joint though.
Culver's and Rally's are both mentioned in other posts - and I agree. Culver's has the best fish sandwich for a more expensive price point, and Rally's has an amazingly good fish sandwich for the money - you can get it on their 4 for $3 meal (sandwich, fries, drink and apple pie), which is the best deal in fast food.
If you have a Culver's in your area they also make a good fish sandwich, especially when they have there walleye fish sandwich.

I work for Arby's. I personally don't like fish sandwiches but ours is alright. Advice: Don't order the fish sandwich through the drive-thru. Order it inside and ask for it to be made fresh. It takes five minutes to cook so you'll be waiting but it's so so so much better when it's fresh. Insanely better. If you want to know what I don't recommend is or were the Oreo Bites. Thankfully we got rid of them. Nasty little balls.

The key to ordering the Filet O Fish at McDs is to get it with tarter sauce only on the side. The sandwich comes out much better and isn’t a soggy mess. Dip the sandwich in the tartar sauce.

What sets the Filet-O-Fish apart is the quality of the fillet. A few years ago I watched a documentary about how McDonald's actually goes out to sea to catch the pollock fish that it uses. They were good then. Now they are terrible, no lettuce, only half a slice of cheese. I gave up on McDonald’s food about twenty years ago. Even my grandkids don’t want to eat there.

I was always torn between getting the Whaler or the Whopper, because I'd say that it USED to be the best hamburger in the industry....BY FAR ! I didn't have a problem deciding between the two because I bought one of each. I was 18 years old and 6-1 and a very skinny 175 pounds and I was always hungry. I ate that 4 or 5 times a week for lunch. As you pointed out there isn't much about the Whopper today that is original. It's amazing to me when they have something that tastes that good that they end up getting rid of it.

Another great sandwich they had was the BK Broiler in the late 80s. I worked there at the time. It was cooked in the same manner of the burgers through the broiler and was really good. not sure when they got rid of it. also, all food is served cold now. not sure why. we would serve it piping hot back in the day.

In Safeway and Walmart frozen food sections there's a brand of frozen batter-fried cod fillets called Young's. It's from England where they specialize in Fish and Chips.
Once you try the cod fillets you will never be able to eat any other brand like Gorton's or Mrs. Pauls or any fast food. They are all inferior.
