    Public Charging has to get swipe to pay working as minimum level reliably. Pay by App and auto charge is great for people who have the time nerd out in the apps to figure out all the tweaks and special features. But as new EV owners come online they need the same pay experience that they have had at every gas station.

    Great video. Love the channel. Your Rivian is a sweet ride. Two things I like about the PFJ locations vs SC is the PFJ are open 24/7/365 and also are always right off the interstates. Thanks for the video. I enjoyed watching.

      EVgo extensively tests their chargers. In fact, they've invited a couple different EV reporters to personally check out their testing facilities. The issue is, unlike Tesla, these charging providers are responsible for supporting all EVs, and so testing is a two-way street. We were already seeing the warts a bit with the number of issues being reported by non-Tesla EV owners attempting to use the Superchargers. Sometimes they just don't work. Is Tesla to blame? Or is it the automaker? Likely, it's a combination of a lot of different factors.

    Thanks for advising about the GM Energy network, I wasn't aware. However, I'm not sure it makes sense to compare it to the Tesla network. More networks help the cause but 200 this year over the entire country will not be noticeable compared to the nearly 2000 Tesla stations and 21,853 SCs as of Oct. 2023. The canopy and pull through are indeed improvements but it appeared only four vehicles could be accommodated. Correct? That wouldn't cut it out west where EVs are ubiquitous. Personally, I don't care what the price per kWh. I'm looking for charging convenience and reliability. The SC network provides such for my Tesla and will with the adapter for my R1T. $0.49 vs $0.59 vs whatever per kWh is all chump change considering 90% of driving is done locally. Congrats on the 1K!

    • @thedukeofmiddleville
      @thedukeofmiddleville  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      They have more than enough room to expand, but four is enough for now because when I looked at the EVgo app the other charger was last used 24 hours prior. The non Tesla chargers, like EA and EVgo, have very low use rates which may explain why they have poor up times.
      Also, out of all the times I have charged at non-Tesla charging stations it is rare to see more than two cars charging at the same time, and there may be less now the SC network is opening up. This is why I will stick with the non-Tesla chargers because I won't have to wait🤗

      @@thedukeofmiddleville Interesting perspective. So, if I understand you correctly, availability is more important than operability. That is, you would take your chances that at least one of the EA stations (for example) would work properly versus just about all the SCs work but you might have to wait. I think the wait issue is overblown. I have supercharged at least 50 times and have waited once for 5 minutes. The other benefit is plug and charge, no Apps, no CC, just juice. If you have experienced a RAN, it works the same way.

      Trust me when I say Tesla's supercharger network is far superior to anything else out there. Tesla cars, Any Model is better than any other electric car out there. I'm not a Tesla fanboy, I'm telling you based on facts since 2013. If you're going electric, go Tesla or regret it later.

      @@surfntrucks Lots of EV owners have no regrets, and that's true for non-Tesla owners as well as Tesla owners.

      Every EV model has several huge advantages over every comparable ICE vehicle, and EVs are still getting better.

      @@davidmenasco5743 I am bias for a reason. My government failed to push America forward in terms of innovation and quality of life for average Americans. I live in New York City and I've witness the air quality change when cars weren't able to drive in the city. No pollution, not fumes, the best air quality I've experienced in years. You can visibly see the difference. I know Electric cars are better than gas cars. Instant torque. The possibility to charge at home. Out of all of the legacy car makers, Tesla was the only car company that took electric cars seriously since 2013. We are in 2024 now and no car maker has a car that can compete with Tesla. Not in charging network or over the air updates, or battery safety, or crash safety. I can go on, but my point is, I am not rewarding any other car company because they failed to take electric cars seriously. They made ugly cars that the general public doesn't want. All they had to do was make an electric Honda civic that looks like a gas Honda civic. An electric mustang that looks like a gas mustang. An electric F150 that looks like a gas F150. I'll never forget Honda's promised hydrogen car from the 90s, 00s that's not even in production today. What a sham. I reward Tesla for leading the way. No other car company takes electric vehicles seriously. It's Tesla that's going to make Fisker, Rivian, Lucid and legacy electric cars viable that's to Tesla's forward thinking with the supercharger network. Supercharging is going to be a horrible experience for Tesla owners going forward but opening the network was always Elon's plan.

      @@surfntrucks There is much truth in what you say. Legacy auto has dragged it's feet on EV development to a degree that is really seriously criminal.
      But today, at least some of them are trying to make EVs. Ford has done pretty well with theirs, as a first effort. Likewise Hyundai group. None compete with Tesla in some important areas. But they do have their own strengths, and their customers are happy.
      The EV transition can't be completed without the participation of many automakers and many charging providers.

  • @newscoulomb3705
    @newscoulomb3705 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    11:09 You were correct with your initial statement that V3 Superchargers load-share, but unlike V2 Superchargers that only share across a single cabinet, V3 share across the entire site. That's why people are confused about the load sharing, but EVs will start to run into charging power limits at V3 Superchargers after the site reaches a certain capacity. Right now, that rarely happens because it's mostly just Tesla EVs using the Superchargers, and they have a very early and abrupt taper on their charging curves. As more non-Tesla EVs start to use V3, this load-sharing will become more noticeable because many non-Tesla EVs will hold their peak (or at least higher) charging power for longer.
    Fairly soon, it's going to be common to have ~50% of the stalls at a V3 Supercharger occupied with EVs requesting 200+ kW, and at that point, most people are going to have their charging speeds limited. This is possibly the reason Tesla limited the Magic Dock connector to 350 A (essentially peak 150 kW), and it will be interesting to see if they limit EVs from other automakers in the same way (Ford and GM should be getting their adapters and access to the Superchargers next month).

    Thanks for the video. A couple things so far. Most of these GM-EVgo sites won't end up being NEVI funded (I think only two out of several hundred so far are), and I think that's a good thing. It means they aren't waiting on those additional, outside funds to build them.
    Also, I've been thinking about how Rivian is going to fit in with the other networks. The choice to put the charging port upfront works for most pull-in style chargers, but these pull-through stalls were designed to support trucks with EV ports toward the rear (or middle when they are pulling trailers). There's probably enough room to navigate, but the R1T definitely wants to be using a charger at the end of a pull-through stall, not the middle.

    These PFJ stations are awesome. For the price premium of $0.10 over EA for 50kWh you’re talking $5 more. I’d argue you get a lot for that $5 vs what you’d get in a Walmart (or worse) parking lot. Your five bucks buys you: Working chargers, amazingly clean 24/7 bathrooms, food options, trash and squeegees, maybe a canopy with lights.

      I wonder if Tesla fixed the supercharger interface issues with Hyundai and Kia?

    • @ShawnGBR
      @ShawnGBR 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Those South Korean cars are BEASTS. Hyundai / Kia / Genesis decided to go with 800 volt architecture, and quick charging is all about your volts multiplied by amps. These 350kW stations are 1000 volts by 350 amps maximum, and your Hyundai IONIQ5 can pull 800 volts at 300 amps (so a 240kW top of the curve) which means you can get in, start the charge, go for a pee, get a drink and a snack, and get out - most other non-luxury / non-truck EVs are only 400 volt cars so they only peak at half the level.
      Yeah, I definitely want an IONIQ6 for my next car.
      And kudos to The Duke for a great video. Maybe Flying J / Pilot will listen and get some of those combination trash can / paper towel dispenser / squeegee stations from ULINE for these new locations (model H-9506, in case they're reading!).

    Duke, I think your Tesla folks were incorrectly correcting you. All Tesla Superchargers load share in that the power cabinets on V3 (and current V4 dispenser locations) use V3 cabinets which are rated at 360kW and generally configured to 4 stalls, they also have a backbone between cabinets (that sometimes fails) but when working allows sharing across more than the 4 stalls named A,B,C,D. But if the station is full ten cars would be limited to 90kW if all cars could use over 90kW or even a half full station would be limited to 180kW per stall if the cars were all wanting 180+kW.
    This is an important detail that many don’t bring up. Generally EA and other Public Chargers don’t over provision as much as Tesla does. Kinda like quantity vs quality.

If you don't have a "membership" for that particular charger network I'm sure it's much closer to parity. In total, the network will include up to 2,000 high-power fast charging stalls at up to 500 Pilot and Flying J travel centers across the U.S. Also, GM owners will get discounted charging.

    It’s not fast enough to be charging that price. If it truly supercharged it in say 5 mins it would be worth the price. But that slow to charge should be discounted. There’s not much convenience

      Its not bad at all if you are taking a road trip. In fact, my family and I looked forward to the charging stops on our road trips. For some reason the road trips are so much less stressful. However, If I had to rely on public charging all the time, it might get annoying.

    Having owned a Tesla Model S for 5 years, i think when you get into the 60 cents + per kWh , unless you're a "tree hugger", gas powered vehicles are less expensive to operate, and MUCH more convenient! At my home charger, it cost me 10 cents per kWh.

    I feel like this "copy a gas pump footprint" will not be cost competitive. That's a huge foot print for 4 chargers. This will have unacceptably small throughput. And scaling it will just not make economical sense. Maybe the tax payer is footing the bill, so who cares right?

    • @thedukeofmiddleville
      @thedukeofmiddleville  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I agree; from a charging perspective that this is not cost competitive, however, gas station owners make most of their profits in their stores, on sales of food and drinks, as well as alcohol where sales are legal.
      As such, EV charging has the opportunity to greatly improve profits since it takes a lot longer to charge than to fill up with gas. In urban and rural areas people use gas stations for grocery stores which will improve contact time since the customer may be charging for a half hour or more.
      In addition, the gm Energy/EVgo/Flying J chargers that have been installed did not receive any NEVI funding, but there are Federal and State incentives to install EV chargers since it is a significant investment with no guaranteed ROI for the purchaser.

      If I am pulling a trailer, I will drive right by the station with no pull through chargers to go to one that does. In fact, even without a trailer, I will still choose the pull through first to reward the station for thinking about truck drivers. So the one trying to maximize number of chargers per area will make zero profit from me.
      Besides, it would be the grid connection, not the space, that would be the bottleneck at most places using 350 kW chargers. Now for a mall or park using level 2 chargers, putting 1 per parking space makes sense.

    • @adairmartin
      @adairmartin 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The canopy is nice. And being pull thru is great if you were pulling a trailer. All that said, it consumes a lot of space. Those type of stalls should be reserved for vehicles pulling trailers. Vehicles not pulling trailers using the typical Tesla SuperChargers use the parking space more efficiently. Adding canopies to those would be nice, and I suspect it will happen over time. It will be interesting to see how the design of the typical “gas station” evolves over the next couple of decades as the transition to EVs occurs.
