    Curious if anyone knows about goat genetics.
    Cassie is fawn and white and I'm pretty sure if I remember right Everest is fawn as well or light brown. How does it work this year there seems to be so many black or black and white kids never mind the crazy ratio M to F so far.

  • @mdc2utube
    @mdc2utube 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for such great series of videos. DO cords ever have to be clamped? I presume they have placenta / afterbirth that needs to expelled and any instructions here?

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. No clamping required. They arent super thick cord so they break away from the placenta when they come out. As soon as it breaks they take their first breath. This is why I like to clean the mucus from their nose and face when they come out. It is good practice to make sure they are cut to about an inch and put iodine on and around the umbilical cord as it's like an open wound. A kid can get joint I'll if it gets infected when laying in the dirt.

    I love your videos! Im a first time goat owner, we bought 3 does. 2 are pregnant. One is 8years old and we got her daughter who is also pregnant and we have the granddaughter who is only about 6 months old. The woman we bought them from said the 8yr old was due a week later. That was 3 weeks ago. Still no babies. She was letting me feel them when we first brought her home. Over the past week tho she isnt letting me touch her belly at all. I noticed some clear drainage but it wasnt very much at all. Now no discharge at all. Any suggestions? Ive watched all of your videos, very helpful and I learned alot. I plan to assist her and her daughter in labor and I've learned a ton from you. I love your goats and you!

    This might be a dumb question, but I'll never know unless I ask.
    What exactly are they doing when they open their mouths like they're going to sneeze but they don't? It's not a yawn either. 😮

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are yawning or stretching their mouths is all. They do it when they are in labor pain and a couple times when going lick crazy cleaning up kids. Probably just a jaw stretch.

    • @sofiabent9129
      @sofiabent9129 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I yawn a LOT the few times I am in extreme pain. It's different from a sleepy type yawn. So it makes sense to me an animal would do it too.

  • @OceanSwimmer
    @OceanSwimmer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the oat (?) straw you put down for the moms' labor and births. I know it costs, but it looks so worth it for the birth & cleaning up afterwards.
    --- What's your opinion, Crystal? Do you find it better?

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It isnt necessary for sure! I do like it better though. If you have the extra funds. In hot temps it breeds flies like crazy though. Even when you replace it every few days. So it has it's down falls to :)

    • @OceanSwimmer
      @OceanSwimmer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BlueCactusDairyGoats I wasn't aware of the increase in flies when using straw bedding, thank you for mentioning it.
      My experience was different with straw bedding for rabbits in heavy wire hutches. I avoided putting straw in the "poop and pee" corners of the cages (rabbits choose one area for their 'toilet') The exception is the youngsters, who will eliminate everywhere, lol. It needs changing frequently for sure in Spring and Summer (I didn't put down oat straw, or ANY bedding in warm weather).
      Goats are definitely different!

My girl is 14 months now! She’s my first and I’m just so scared I’m going to do something wrong and loose her to the birth lol I’m super ocd about it and am just not sure what to do! I go more off of width thurl to thurl. I want to make sure they can pass a kid. We breed at 7 months old if they are good. You would probably be fine to breed her at that age. Is she a Nigerian? Waiting too long can cause them to get overweight then cause issues getting them bred.
