- Firstly... the "Switch" in the title isn't a Nintendo reference, no matter how much I wanted it to be. No, I'm afraid this is firmly about Xbox vs PS4, Xbox vs. Playstation... it's a battle of the ages. I've owned an Xbox since they first appeared. For me, the original Xbox arrived at the right time; a time when I was looking for a casual gaming platform. From there, I've stuck with them for my "current generation" needs. But recently, something has been upsetting me (likely just my lack of tolerance, or sheer stupidity), and I wanted to see if the competition had the same issue. This video is therefore about my life as an Xbox Fanboy (apologies for that phrase), and how I've seen a new light, a light that resembles a floating P in the sky.... Sony Playstation.
For those who can't be arsed with all the click bait titles, it's about the Xbox Dashboard evolution, or devolution in my eyes. Has the Xbox dashboard devolved?

It is a very strange and random computer history but I wouldn't change it for the world, loved every minute!
Don't forget that you can create folders for your apps and games...
to manage downloads click the notifications and you will see your download, click on your download and you be able to see all your downloads and pause and start them as you please. also in settings change your share button settings to easy picture mode ;D love the content add me if you want : kiyro
7:29 - I don't use Xbox but I think what you describe may be another instance of what I see as a growing trend in user interfaces:
Basically, they don't serve *us* any more, they exist to promote content.
So the things you use most (games you own, TH-cam channels you've subscribed to, Netflix or Amazon shows you actually watch, etc.) get sidelined in favor of the things they want to promote.

That was what I hated most about the tiles interface on the XBox 360: Most of the screen space was devoted to ads. I started disconnecting the ethernet cable any time I wasn't actively using the network, because having 3/4s of my screen devoted to ads about how to plug in a cable was preferable to having 3/4s of my screen devoted to ads for multimedia entertainment purchasing opportunities.
Also, the blades interface was just... really nice. Well-organized, easy to navigate, and just pleasant to look at.
It is telling that the later interfaces saw me frequently mashing the XBox Logo Button to bring up the "mini blades" to do things... even when I was already in the system menu. The easiest way to find something in the menu was to push a button to bring up another menu that was organized the way things were before they "improved" it.

Reason I go with PS these days are the console exclusives. They're growing a mighty fine games library.
the ps3 had more and better exclusives, so far the ps4 is my least favorite playstation .. Ps3 > 2 >1 >4 .. could that change? Maybe but they would have to release alot of good exclusives in the next two years

Just an FYI. You can manage downloads from the "Notifications" menu... It's a dumb place to put it, but Sony isn't perfect. As for Microsoft, they lost their damn minds with Windows 8 and have been bouncing of their padded cell walls ever since

I went from PS2 to 360 (two versions) before finally getting a PS3 late in it's lifecycle. The PS3 felt like a BIG downgrade from the 360 but I really loved that I could play online without a paid subscription and the online community was just better.
I bought a PS4 on release mainly because the XBone was an obvious flop and wow what an upgrade. I really like the UI which always feels fast, unlike that on the PS3 which was painfully slow at times. My only real complaints about the PS4 is the online store and it's exploitative prices and the fact that multiplayer is paid subscription again but I guess that's the norm now.

Yes. Slower UI, awful messaging system and most PS3 games are cross platform ports which were always worse on the PS3 and if you don't believe this then you obviously never played Skyrim or Dragon Age on both systems.
The PS3 was not 'faster' than the 360. The Cell architecture, if cleverly used, could perform wonders but most games didn't.
As an Xbox Insider Program member, I can tell you that they release dashboard updates to us first, then ask for our feedback, I don't always get around to giving feedback, but the changes are made by MS, then we "vote" if you will as to if we like them or not. I typically find something I consider to be an improvement.... I do find it a bit jarring that 3 or 4 months after I get used to a new dashboard, I try to navigate a RTM dashboard or help someone find "how to do this" over chat and they're like "what are you talking about???" because they're still on the old dash... The dashboard you're showing here actually can learn who you like, what games/apps you like to use the most, and when you're really not sure it's getting the point, you can PIN the app/game to the home screen... It's not perfect, but nothing ever is, at least not for everyone... cheers
Have you played the new MCC? I love the 4K 60fps and the layout improvements.
I personally think the blades design on the Xbox 360 was the easiest and best design.

PSP/PS3's XMB, as others have pointed out, was hands-down the pinnacle of speed, simplicity and efficiency. Modern designs try to do too much and end up being shit.
Remember when you could listen to your music and play at the same time 😢 when it updates it deleted 200 music files
Playstation never really changes its interface , the insane library of games, the design choices for the system and everything about it are good ( FYI you can plug your 3.5mm headphones into the controller to re-route sound....and it's gorgeous!)
I do have an xbox original and a 360 but the 360 is....loud and very slow now ( xbox original isn't and only has a jammed DVD drive that needs a tap to open), it was nice at first but as the updates went on and the system slowed....I already have loading screens to wade through...I don't need more.
GTArajgaming when your Xbox original drive is jammed, keep the disc in the console for it to open normally every time and you won't need to tap it.

Yup, but to me the PS4’s interface does seem to be allot slower than it was before.
I think the next big firmware is meant to speed it up and just make it a much smoother experience, whilst also rumoured to be adding allot of requested features like mine and many others most wanted feature which is PSN ID changes. I’ve been stuck with the same ID I made back in 2009 and I hate it now.
i started on x360, long after the blades were gone, but tbh the blades were the best user interface they had. i switched to ps4 because of the exclusives. i have dreamcast, ps2 fat, x360 slim, ps4 slim, all wonderful machines.
feamatar I agree those blades were great I used that skin with xbmc when I softmodded my Xbox original , it was great having blade menu on there
feamatar Xbox has always improved hardware with slims...Sony's slims are usually lower quality hardware with less features...if it were not for owning a Pro I would still own my original PS4.

I went ps1, n64, ps2, orginal xbox, multiple 360s becauae of RROD, xbox one in 2015, then the xbox one X.
You know what got me into PlayStation originally? The price...yup, that's it. I wanted one of the next gen systems (at the time it was PS1 and Saturn)..PlayStation was $299 and Saturn was $399....$100 price difference meant a game and second controller...so I went with the PlayStation, controller and Battle Arena Toshinden. I had been a fan of fighting games all my life, it was a great two player experience and it didn't need a memory card. Perfect 1st game purchase...granted, there wasn't really all that much to choose from at launch....

I've had an Xbox One for a few months now, switching between that and the PS4, and I STILL cannot wrap my head around it's menus... I'm 99% sure there are still a ton of menus left unexplored to me!

To prioritize a download pause the ones you don't wanna prioritize
Yeah you can basically do the same thing on XB1. If it has a prioritisation feature I wasn't aware of it.
You can actually select and prioritize an Xbox one download. Having to pause each and every other one on the PS4 is a workaround, not a solution.

I have to disagree, even though I like my PlayStation better than my Xbox. Pausing means, that you have to unpause manually after the "prioritized" download finished. With a real prioritizing feature the other download would automatically unpause and download after the first one. ;)

The best and simplest UI I've ever used was the "XMB" used in the PSP and PS3 consoles. Hands down - the best memories of using a console.
My first console was the PS2, loved it. But something happened to it and I only had the DS. Later got the 360 in 2010 (it was for my brother birthday, but I played on it the most), then I got a Xbox one for Christmas (2015 Christmas), through 2 years of having it, I lost my feeling of exciting. No exclusive, boring interface, and holy shit was download speed really slow and I wanted to switch to ps4 so I could play the PlayStation exclusive. So my brother (same one who got a Xbox 360 for his birthday) bought me a ps4 pro for Christmas and I was really happy. Loved it and play on it most of the time, great to have a PlayStation console again.
For me I rarely buy a console for its exclusives, since I play mostly 3rd party anyways (as do most ppl). So I hav stuck with Xbox since 7th gen, even if certain things suck about it I dont really give much care. Only system I care for, for its exclusives, is Nintendo. (and PC but it not a console so dont mind tht lol)
PS2 was definitely my fav console! And I bought the 360 a year after release (the PS3 was $100 more at the time). I still play a lot on the PC as well and went through 4 or so 360s. Finally in 2018 upgrading to the Xbox One.
I have a pc with a 1080 and a one x, im only playing red dead on the xbox but for some shitty reason the servers have been down for 3 hours already, fuck xbox i cant even play a 100gb game without being online

No the human eye can see well past 30 fps, whoever says that hasn't done their studies, as humans are capable of seeing bullets with a well trained eye, so seeing 120 fps is pretty normal, some people go to 240 fps for a more serious way of playing games.

I recently got a PS4 for myself as well. I've had an Xbox One since launch and have been through the various dashboard updates. Overall I think it's solid--I'm mostly in my "Games and Apps" area, or I just hit the home button to bring up the side bar. Pretty basic stuff. On the PS4 end of things it was a pleasant surprise, for some of the same reasons you mentioned. I have run into some problems though, like download management is less user friendly and the PSN store often just times out on me, and it won't correct itself until I reboot the console. Aggravating. Still, I can deal with it--the games and the controller are fantastic.
You can manage downloads in the notifications tab. As for the store time outs I've never had any issues
90s was a crazy time for PC... I could not keep up with changes so I went Playstation and I do not regret it. PSX and PS2 are my fav consoles and also place of birth for many astounding games.

I loathe the Xbox One menu, very confusing and all. The PS4 menu is something I wasn't a fan of until I found out that you can make folders to put set games in and I like it that way so I got used to it. The PS3 menu will always be my favourite menu for being tidy and easy to navigate.
Froban Xbox One menu is easy and you also can make groups of games and select them from the menu
Do note that PS4 downloads are also tracked in the notifications widget, if that helps. I can't say for sure, since I usually just let my downloads run untouched.
There’s something I really like about the older consoles, they were a LOT less laggier. The ps4 menu feels like 15 frames at most times

Rex Holes red rings were why I didn't buy a 360 until much later. otherwise I would've had an early model and probably would've learned how to upgrade the hard drive later as updates were made. either that or attach an external drive (Currently possible).

I was lucky my Arcade 360 I got in 06' and modded didn't get RR until 2014. I fixed it myself but still got RR 2016. I didn't know all Arcade 360's will eventually get RR. It was a design flaw.

OMEGA-P _74 that’s why I bought a Jasper motherboard Elite, it’s the best if the original model 360’s. I got it as I already had a hard drive and power supply that work with it.
To be perfectly honest, modern OSes disgust me, with their boring flat squares, monochrome icons and general lack of borderlines, even my good'ol Nintendo has disappointed with the Switch, that's easily the most boring OS they've ever put on any of their systems...
I miss the design sensibilities of the late 2000s, remember when everything had smooth edges, clearly defined borderlines, lots of shading, highlights, translucency, all paired with smooth transitions that made sense to the eyes? You know what I'm talking about, Windows 7, the Nintendo 3DS, Wii and PS Vita home menus, even the PSP and PS3 OSes were nothing to scoff at (even if I highly prefer the Wii menu over them) I *really* hope this phase of flat unshaded squares and monochrome icons fades away soon, because it's bloody terrible...
Hey, michirin! Good to see ya here (love the music)! Bloody agree. I feel like the old Nintendo interfaces had that 'Nintendo charm' in them, with the music and other small easter eggs. But when I tried out the Switch interface at a friend's house (still saving up for switch), it felt boring but snappy (unlike the Wii U) and easy to understand, can't say that about Xbox unfortunatley. I saw the One at my uncle's house and it still puzzles me how you navigate that thing - and that was just the pre-2016 design!
I also want skewmorphism (early iOS, Wii, Windows 7/Xp) back, this over-simplistic design is getting really same-y looking.
Ehhh sometimes UI designers went a little overboard with the translucency, I'm glad that it's a little more subdued now, though I do agree that this flat flat flat crap needs to stop. Even the TH-cam UI is hot garbage now.

Nah the Wii didn't win, 100million Wii users lost! (I had one as well as everyone else but after those four or five big Nintendo games there was a lot of trash that looked like bad PS2 games). What really pissed me off is that the crappy 480i resolution meant that a lot of stuff looked less attractive than Gamecube games (now that WAS a cool system!)
I don’t actually mind the Xbox One interface, I do find it easy to use (except for the mixer and community tabs I never use those)

I own both consoles and honestly I don’t see what’s hard about the Xbox dashboard seems pretty simple to me.
I also have both consoles, and I prefer the xbox 1 to the ps4s dashboard . Remember it had to work with the Kinect on the xbox.☺

To choose which game or update you want to download first, go to the top section of the interface and go to notifications, there it will show you the updates or downloads happening. Clicking on one of them will give you the option to pause it or cancel it so you can choose which one to download first, or you can pause them both so you get the maximum out of your internet, if you want to leave your games to download whilst you’re not playing, you can go to settings, then power saving settings ( which are almost at the bottom of the settings section ), then go on allow setting in rest mode section. Tick the box witch says ‘allow internet access’. Then go to turn off your ps4 but it will give you an option to put it in rest mode. This will not turn off your ps4 completely allowing your downloads to be completed but taking up less power
I have to tell you as an owner of a PS4 Pro and Xbox One X both consoles have been good to me. Cheers mate.
I also own and love them both. The game pass and backwards compatibility are both wonderful.

After watching this video after 2 months I have to tell you I think this guy sounds more like a fanboy then I may have originally thought the first time... I don't know either way I don't see the point in fanboy video's about how good one console is over another when the original Xbox came out I got it, when the PS2 came out guess what... that's right I got one I been getting both consoles pretty much since the beginning. Now with the 360 I heard of all the little problems it had, but honestly I never had my Elite 360 overheat and get a red ring like they say. I had a project called an intercooler it still works today. I have been using it since like 2009 when I got my 360 after the first few years and the price went down I got a PS3 slim which I still use as well. Then about 6 months ago I got my first PS4 Pro and jumped into the current gen about 3 and a half months I got the One X and loved it as equally as any other console I've bought.
Point is the fanboy video's are pointless both consoles have things the do well AND THINGS THEY DON'T. The fanboys... kinda like this guys video, will only point out what one console sucks at and not what it does well at.

@Keegan McGloughlin I own both for games, only xbox has all of the classic star wars games that i love and still play more than anything else, but ps4 has spiderman and persona so i have that too.
The original 360 blades dashboard will always be the best dashboard to grace any console. So fast, fluid, and just matched the design of the console. No ads were a bonus
You can prioritize downloads by pausing and resuming downloads in the order you want them done in. You can do this in the Notifications > Downloads > press select on a downloading app and you will have the option to pause
What's your opinion on PC gaming as it is today? Do you play any modern games or retro games on a modern PC? I know you have the Compaq Presario 486 PC and a few others, plus the other 8 bit and 16 bit computers, but I'm specifically talking about DOS/Windows gaming here.

Hipsty Hopsty launch was trash. I remember trying to navigate my brother's launch dashboard.
Damn, really? I really miss the classic Xbox1 dashboard. The whole "live videogame" display was innovative, and I preferred the more blocky design as opposed to lists, but it would be hard to go back to it now, since the new dashboard is a little quicker to navigate though it's less pleasing to the eyes.

So Idk if anyone has pointed this out yet, but if you go to the notifications tab there will be a downloads section whenever you’re installing games and if you’re downloading multiple things at once you can pause downloads so that others can take their place or just pause all but one so it can download by itself.

Had Xbox one for years thought PS4 display and controller looked bad but switched now after using one. It is miles better.
Michael Jopling I can never get the hang of an Xbox controller. I'm probably just dumb, but that's why I bought an extra PS4 controller along with the console controller. It's especially nice for PC gaming

So weird, I had a 486 at the time the Playstation and Saturn came out. They made my PC feel so inadequate. Only many years later I came to realise things were not all that golden on the console side.
must have been a low end 486? a proper one would run circles around those puny consoles. but they (the PC) were expensive, you needed a videocard, a soundcard etc

I still have my big, clunky version of the PS3 hooked up to my TV. I can watch Netflix on it and it has a blue ray drive for DVD/BluRay movies. I have never had a single problem with it.

I don't know, I never really got frustrated with the XBox One UI.
I started my gaming on a PS1 with Hot Wheels Turbo Racing. The main reason I got into PlayStation rather than the XB line is simply because my sisters did, and I was the youngest of three. My sisters were kind enough to allow me to use their game consoles, which eventually included a Gamecube, a Nintendo, a Super Nintendo, and a PS2 as well. When they both moved their consoles elsewhere, I was lucky enough to have a grandmother who I could ask to get me a PS2 for Christmas. By then I'd acquired my own stack of games for the thing, so the PS2 was the logical choice for me. I also couldn't get over the different layout of the controller, not to mention the feel of the triggers, on the XBOX when I finally got to play one at either a friend or relative's house. Strangely enough, the Gamecube controller felt natural to me as well (To the point where I actually got a blister on my thumb playing Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 far too hard for far too long). I wound up finally getting one of those years later at school on locker clean-out day of all places and times, from a friend who no longer wanted to deal with the thing, which didn't come with cables, controllers or games. I've racked up three PS2s, a GameCube, two GameBoy Advance SPs, two DS Lites, and long after the PS4 came out, a 160 GB PS3 from a pawn shop. I always seem to remember having an ancient tower computer with simple older games like Atomic Bomberman and Diablo or Warcraft tucked in the corner, and as a result wound up interested in PCs as well. I'm on my fourth budget laptop now after the first one's screen died, followed by a horrible error on my part which corrupted the Windows XP installation that I didn't know how to repair at the time, and the second one wound up given to my sister because I'd purchased a slightly better one, with plans to switch back to my third one that is currently being used as a server, because my current laptop is actually slightly older. I switched to it because when I ran a comparison online I found it had a marginally better graphics chipset, and hoped it would give a noticeable improvement, which unfortunately it did not. In fact, it seems to have been a small step backwards. It has and will continue to serve me well until I iron out a few more details regarding exactly how I want to switch my current laptop over into the 'server' role.
People who play videogames, in my experience, almost always have interesting gaming history, and can usually tell you rather strange if not laughable stories regarding how they got to their current situation. Very rarely do people share a tech path, and almost no one has the same exact taste in games. With the way I've been going, I probably won't own a PS4 until the PS5's been put on the store shelves, which in the long run saves me money, but also makes it harder to find some games. I hope to kick my current position on the back of the tech curve in the pants soon, though, and have plans to build myself an actual tower PC utilizing still [semi?] relevant but older hardware, as well as to, hopefully, move up another generation in the PlayStation family.
I've been lucky, and have probably saved hundreds, if not a couple thousand dollars, holding my position in the back, especially with the veritable 'steals' I've gotten on some of my tech. A DS Lite was free, a GBA SP was a quarter, I got another of each of those for maybe $5, I've gotten PS2s for under $35, got an N64 for $35 from a yard sale but it needs a repair on the Player 2 controller port but is otherwise fine, The Gamecube was free, the GTX 560 I plan on using was free, the mobo and 8-core AMD I got with it from a friend was only like $160 together, my first laptop was free... in short, good things come to those who wait :D
you can prioritize in by entering the notifications then press the options button on the ps4 controller then select downloads then click whatever downloads you want to stop then select pause
I own both but I prefer the Xbox due to its controller being well better, and my kids hate Sony now for not allowing cross platform because of some shite game they play called fortnite

To prioritize downloads just pause the ones you want later and download what you want first (up to 3 at a time) then unpause the others. Also I put all my apps and stuff in folders so I only have about 5 or 6 folders on my menu. So clean.
I haven't felt the new xbone dash as a problem it feels fluid and easy to me.

if it helps at all sony released a ps/2 adapter for the ps1 and an official mouse that worked on select games ps2 they further expanded it by just plugging in any usb mouse and keyboard into the usb ports

I've never understood the complaints about the Xbox One interface, I'm finding it very easy to use, and the Guide is... Well, it's amazing, I can accomplish almost everything from it. I don't have a PS4 yet (money issues, it's not that I don't want one), but I do have a PS3, and from what I've seen, the design principles behind the PS3 and the PS4 interfaces are pretty similar. I like the PS3 GUI as well, for the most part, and I do appreciate how fluid it feels (although I've never had big issues with responsiveness of the Xbox One interface either, except for the Store, which is still terrible). However, dumping a bunch of icons into a single column (the way that PS3 does it) or a single row (the way that PS4 does it, and also how the 360 used to do it in its game library) - now that's bad design to me. It only works well when there are not many elements to scroll through to get to the one you want.
Here's a funny thing that happened with my Xbox 360, years ago before I had the wifi adapter and before it was connected to the internet in the consoles life. On the dashboard where you had to scroll along to get everything I found a download profile button which I clicked to see what it did and then my console rebooted at random into the metro tiles theme for no reason and I went and found the button again in the new theme which rebooted itself again back to the previous theme and I kept doing this until it said there was no wifi in the metro tiles theme and I got locked into the metro tiles theme
You can prioritize downloads. Go to notifications and downloads and it will show what is downloading. You can pause the ones you don't want right now. (Not in the settings)

You don't need Titan X's or 1080ti's to game, I bought a 1060 6gb for 229$ and it runs everything 1080p60 Ultra. PS4 pro can't do that.

I personally like PS4's dashboard, as well as being able to change the color. ( I went with Red since that's my favorite color ) Can't forget about custom wallpapers either. ^_^

My favourite interface even to this day is the GameCube's. Nothing like a floating omniscient cube staring into your soul as you navigate with either up, down, left, or right.
I'm sure it's been said, but if not, you can prioritize downloads by heading to your notifications, and pressing options on the download you want stopped and then press X on the pause option. Might even be an easier way than that.
Meh... as an old hand working in design, I can't see what realls tickled your fancy on the Playstation Menus... both pretty similar... clicking for hours and hours (your words) to get to an xbox setting or games? Just press the HOME button on your controller, and the option is there.... my hours and hours take less than half a second!

I really liked the XMB from the PS3. Looking past the delay it takes to access some online features, it was mostly pretty simple and well organized.
The brief contact I've had with the PS4 UI so far has been a bit confusing, feels like it's got a learning curve.
Okay, I'll start with saying this: The Xbox One dashboard at launch was absolutely horrible. It ran like garbage, it consistently crashed, the snap feature was undercooked, and the PIP of gameplay while at the main menu only caused more problems. Through many, MANY updates to the interface (the games and apps... app is still a disaster for some reason), Microsoft finally managed to get something almost optimized by 2017. 4 years after the initial launch. And my original base XBone was still struggling with the simplest of tasks on the Home screen (especially with download management, which is broken AF). When I decided to get an Xbox One X (for some reason), it solved almost everything with regards to the interface. No slowdown, no more crashes, downloading is still a mess but for the most part, it ran well for the first time since I bought the original in 2014. It makes me think the interface was never optimized for the original 8 GB of DDR3 Ram, and needed the boost only the X can give it... but that's another mess I won't get into.

with my ps4 I have always struggled to use it. Nothing in the menu ever loads for me but I have no idea what the problem could be.
I really don't mind the Xbox UI. I only use a couple functions repeatedly like making parties or finding friends. The functions I use are all easy and quick to get to. I have more of an issue with particular apps. I still use Cortana and the voice controls to do certain things like raising and lowering the volume (yep, I have the Kinect), but certain apps (like Hulu) just doesn't play nice with it sometimes. It can take a REALLY long time for it to react to a volume change if it reacts at all. I'm a huge fan of voice controls on the console, simple ones anyway, but some apps really frustrate me.

Do you even develop games for consoles? Even if the PS4 is stronger with the base consoles, development is harder on it. All graphics related code needs to be ported to the PS4 graphics API with PSSL which forces you to write two renderers for development, while the xbox one supports UWP, where you only have to write one version of the game that would work on both PC and PS4, why do you prefer PS4 then as a developer? Or are you an engine guy?

thank god for Nintendo, who put games first. The switch is somewhat of a dissappointment so far, but really they just need to add user sorting as a choice (instead of recently played) and grid system like they had on Wii and WiiU. To be honest, i think both PS4 and XO dashboard designs are utter crap. they're both bloated and messy. I would much rather put consistency and the games library in the forefront of an UI, with all the major functions accessible from the main screen (which they are)
I usually stop the downloads I don't want, and it'll move on down the list to the next. I just keep doing that until I get to the one I want. I think pausing the download will do the same. I can't remember, because I play mostly offline, and rarely download.
Nice to see someone else with a weird gaming past. I started on a Win95 PC, kept that for years until it got very old bar minor upgrades, got a PS1 a couple of years before the PS2 then eventually a PS2, then upgraded my PC and just kept a console or two from the current generation, usually whichever one has the best exclusives. (Last one I got was a Wii U, currently considering a Switch)

Ps1 and ps2 are the jam. Ps3 has unholy menus. And it causes my tv to become epileptic since the ps3 changes resolutions on every new interface or menu? If it wasnt for exclusives id sell it.

I likewise hated the PS3 menus, my tv also jumped around with the constant resolution changes - it felt entirely backwards after the simple Xbox360 UI.
