Socialism Fails Every Time

  • Socialism has become cool in America, under the nice name "democratic socialism".

    ---------
    Gloria Álvarez ‏knows better, because she's from Latin America and studied socialism there. She says: watch out! Socialism has a clear track record of wrecking every country that implements it.
    Cuba tried socialism. Things got so bad that tens of thousands fled the island on dangerous, makeshift rafts. Others paid lots of money to be allowed to leave.
    Álvarez interviews people who fled. One man told her that in Cuba: "You don’t see any future. Everything is stagnated ... health care, education, nowadays they’re in ruins."
    Another said: "My father (a doctor) had to sell illegal meats out of his ambulance ... because Cuban doctors earn less than 1% of American doctors."
    Because of his experience with socialism, that man is now running as a libertarian for a Florida State House seat.
    He adds: "I tell my Venezuelan friends, we warned you guys!"
    After Cuba, the next Latin American country to get totally immersed in socialism was Venezuela. For a while, things seemed to work okay thanks to the country's oil wealth; Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world, and used to be the richest country in Latin America.
    Celebrities like Michael Moore and Sean Penn visited Hugo Chavez and praised his socialism.
    Venezuelans were happy, too. A former mayor in Venezuela's capital city told Álvarez: "People were clapping so hard. They were like, 'Oh, finally there is somebody here making social justice.'"
    But eventually socialism led to a mismanagement of the economy that was so bad that money started to run out. The government just printed more, so much more that it led to million-percent inflation.
    Life savings were wiped out.
    When businesses raised prices to try to keep up with inflation, Chavez and his successor President Maduro banned that.
    When businesses did it anyway, they were seized by the government. This tragic video shows a shopkeeper pleading as his business is taken away. It wasn't a one-time thing; more than 30,000 businesses were confiscated.
    Now, millions starve. The average Venezuelan has lost 24 pounds. More than 2 million people have fled the country.
    "It's like the apocalypse. It's no food. No medicine," one Venezuelan told Álvarez.
    But some still defend socialism, saying that what happened there "isn't real socialism." Bernie Sanders says: "when I talk about Socialism I am not looking at Venezuela, I’m not looking at Cuba. I’m looking at countries like Denmark, like Sweden."
    But Denmark's prime minister says that's a mistake: "Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy," he clarified.
    In Scandinavian countries, government regulates business less than America’s government does. Scandinavian countries don’t even have a minimum wage.
    Real socialism looks more like Cuba and Venezuela.
    Álvarez hopes people look at socialism's track record before implementing it anywhere else.

      @Marina Tower Property Manager - Socialism doesn't work in those countries. Even Denmark, Norway and Switzerland say they're NOT socialists. They are free market societies with strong social policies.
      Socialism isn't just redistribution of other people's money. It's having the country's economy actually run through the federal government (like the current Democrats want). The free market is chocked out in a true socialist society, and in the end (because of no responsibility or accountability), they ALL end up like Venezuela.

    • @TodaysDante
      @TodaysDante 4 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      @Marina Tower Property Manager - Typical democrat tactic - accuse others of which you yourself is guilty.
      Where you're 100% wrong is that the democrats want a free market society with strong social programs. Obamacare is a perfect example. This is our healthcare system (a large percentage of our economy) now having our own government in competition.
      Almost all the democrats running for President now say Obamacare doesn't go far enough and that they want the government to be the ONLY option for EVERY US citizen AND every illegal immigrant when it comes to healthcare.
      They also want to force electric cars, what to eat (no red meat), etc etc... anything they feel will push this fictional climate change green new deal agenda, when, in reality, they only want more power.
      YOUR DESIRE TO DESTROY MY GREAT COUNTRY WILL FAIL because the American people (minus the liberals) aren't stupid!

    When I was 7 I remember vividly asking my mom why I couldn't have some power rangers toy we walked past in sears (this was a while ago....) she said my birthday was coming soon and she couldn't afford to buy me the toy that day with my birthday a few weeks away. It was some big play set I remember the price was $49.95.
    I asked mom why can't everyone have enough money for everything they want. She told me that if everyone could have everything, I'm time everyone would take and nobody would give and eventually nobody would be left making the toy I wanted in the first place.
    Socialism sounded great when I was 7, but by the time that 8th birthday rolled around I was educated on its faults. Hard to sit by today while grown adults are calling for something I learned would not work when I was a child.

You must choose a socialist country (or towards becoming a socialist country) that is not a shit hole yet, and send them there. My recommendation: Spain or Argentina. If they say they will by bringing Cuba's socialism here, say why reinvent Cuba here. Nothing beats the real thing and keep insisting they go to Cuba for 1 yr at least to properly experience Cuba.
      As for open borders, we can't have that. We are preventing people fleeing to capitalism. Rather we are doing 2 things we are ensuring those coming here will ADD to our country not just leech off of us, and 2 we are preventing dangerous people from walking across and wrecking havoc like the violent gangs. So the border can not stay open. Otherwise for all the people that come in the correct way, we are making it awefully unsafe for them.

    Socialism=Utopia
    Unfortunately Brazil, Portugal and Spain still socialism states with stagnant economies, where company profits are contestedly plundered by the state, work incentives are increasingly diminishing, tax burdens are record and expenses are uncontrolled with low anti-corruption controls. The example of Norway's policies is the result of the discovery of a large oil reserve in its sea, part of the revenue from which was applied to investments in SP500 (something capitalist, let's say) and another part of the revenue was used to improve other economic sectors and the general well-being of the population, whose societal values are more of solidarity, without taking advantage of a part of the population that does not want to work and wait for the state to support it. Venezuela also has one of the largest oil reserves, however, with more than 90% of the people poor financially and intellectually and with a government that takes advantage of the people's dependence on the state, it is unlikely to prosper. When Norway sees its oil reserves decrease, it will certainly take more capitalist measures than socialist ones, as these are the ones that generate wealth

Beside, definition of socialism is worker's ownership of means of production. Did that happen anywhere (except in Yugoslavia), in any socialist country? No, elite ruled and enjoyed it all. Google why self-managed socialism is different than historic socialism. And USA is perfect country for that, because you have great check and balance system there (I believe that's what is called?). • @goranmilic442

      @Harry Moobs Are you saying that every system is doomed if it has a word socialism in the name? If democratic socialism is planning no unnecessary government intervention on market, no dictatorship, no planned economy, no gulags, no human right violations and it wants prices to be determined on free market, with people owning their enterprises and being able to save money, flat taxes and, ok, maybe little social welfare state for cases of emergency, you're saying that will fail because it's still socialism? For that to be true, you have to prove at least one of this two things: all socialist are bad people that want to torture people or there is some common thing for every existing kind of socialism that is going to make socialism fail every time. So, if you can identify that thing and not just say it's going to fail because of it's name, I would be very interested to learn about it.

    • @goranmilic442
      @goranmilic442 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Harry Moobs OK, I see where is our misunderstanding. I say that definition of socialism is workers owning the means of production. That is a definition, like capitalism being investors/capitalists owning that means. So modern democratic socialism with self-managed enterprises has little to do with taking other people's money. I couldn't agree more with you that what your democrats proposing is a socialism, but it's an old school socialism. When I talk about modern socialism, I'm certainly not talking about US democrats. Obama, Hilary, even Sanders, they all think they are reformed left, but they aren't. There are completely different kind of socialism than what I'm talking about. So if you want to prove that every kind of socialism fails, don't tell me about US democtars, tell me why self-managed socialism can't work.

Income taxes are 50-60%, sales tax is 25% and that includes on food, electricity and water. There are also tons of special taxes like 180% tax on the purchase of a car, and special taxes on things like beer and cigarettes. Denmark has the highest utility prices in the world, and an iPad costs twice as much in Denmark than in the US. Housing prices are ridiculous, and many Danes choose communal living to make ends meet. Only 1/3rd of Danish families have a car (in America its 91%). Also the average income of Americans is higher than the average income of Danes.

      vertex2100 ...well it can be argued that the people received extraordinary social support in the form of free daycare...free schooling, free healthcare, excellent subsidized housing and 6-8 week annual vacations for every worker. If you add up the cost of these things and put that amount in the pocket of each citizen...instead of these services, thats how much the people get out of it. Having said that, Denmark and a few of the Baltic countries are in my opinion the only nations where socialism with a market economy can work, as they have a strong industrial base, education and are not so big that everyone needs a vehicle to get around and hence can live in proximity to most services and workplaces.. (...and even at this point, Sweden is already starting to feel an economic pressure to lower the social support it has traditionally given in the past....perhaps the influx of immigrants that have flooded in recently...has started this spiral)..

So you can't split that between all citizens, because all citizens don't qualify for the same things.

      @Ataulf73 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      One correction though. Car taxes have been lowered to just 150% (but that is calculated after the 25% in sales taxes). On top of that an annual car tax is incurred. Depending on the size of the car, you will pay about USD 450.
      In terms of electricity tax, you pay about 900%. Electricity costs about 5 cents to produce per kWh, but we Danes pay about 50 cents, after all sorts of special taxes have been added.
      We have so many weird taxes. For example we pay a special volume tax on ice cream, but only after it has been fluffed by air.
      A jar of pickles is specially taxed. Besides the 25% in sales tax, there is a tax on the lid, the label, and on the vinegar.
      I could continue listing odd taxes, but you get the point.
      The thing is, that only a third is employed in the private sector. Another third is employed in the public sector, and the last third is unemployed, and on welfare benefits.
      The taxes have to be so high and omnipresent to fund the public spending.
      If you look at the wealth of Denmark and the trend you will notice that slowly but surely we are going the way of Venezuela.

      Anyone who imagines themselves in a Communist Utopia, read " the Gulag archipelago", by Solzoynietzin. Stalin killed millions more of his own people than Hitler did. He was a paranoid master of fear, and psychopathicly ruthless. His total body count is staggering, 25-35 MILLION PEOPLE.

    Its also important to know, if the goverment actually creates value for people, others will always say “it’s damaging the economy”. The issue is, we don’t have a way to measure the value that a goverment creates. In the normal market, we used a faulty model based on preferences and cost that people charge. What these hawks don’t realize is the real economy is not the stock market! Which is owned 50% by 1% and 92% by top 10% (Everybody else’s retierment is in that 8%). But the real economy is the people. And if we are helping that, we need to challenge back that “we are hurting the economy”

    I disagree. Venezuela is not an exemple of socialism's failure. Quite the opposite. It's an exemple of socialism's great success because it's goal is to make everyone equally poor, dirty and hungry. So when the goal is achieved it's not a failure but a success.

    As somebody who lived in Scandinavia and still has friends and family there, I always get angry when leftists try to portray it as socialist. Sweden WAS socialist in the past, yes. But guess what happened? The people did not want it anymore because it was decreasing wealth. As we saw in Scandinavia and Venezuela, "democratic socialism" only works for a short time before it drops one of the two things: Either the country stays democratic but becomes less socialist because people are fed up with losing wealth and demand less socialism or it stays socialist and turns autocratic.

    The Scandinavian countries are not Socialist, they are actually free market economies. Other than their their socialized medicine, there is little to nothing socialist about their countries. The high tax rate they have )in order to support their socialized medicine) is beginning to show and their economies are starting to bog down.
    Funny how when Venezuela started their decent, Bernie and rest had nothing but praise and now that Venezuela is reaping what they have sown, they are trying to distance themselves from it.

      Chavez s economic policies were a disaster. His " nationalizing " of foreign oil infrastructure made powerful enemies. Maduro isn't any better. He may have faked an assassination attempt to elicit sympathy, declare martial law, and purge his enemies. The Venezuelan people are the big loosers in this "socialist Utopia ". Just think, that could be you ! Paying $2,000,000 for your families dinner..
