  • Hello everyone,
With the release of the new Firebrand movie, I thought it would be good to take a deeper look at the real HISTORY of Anne Askew.
A true force to be reckoned with.

Queen Catherine got so lucky that Anne did not give her up even under extreme torture … 💔

Was there anything to give up? I'm not sure that Catherine interacted with Anne all that much. I know some ladies around her did, bringing her money, but I don't recall of any evidence that Catherine did. I get that she might have agreed to what Askew was saying, but is there anything more substantial to implicate Catherine?

I first heard of Anne Askew several years ago and was horrified by her fate. Thank you for dedicating this broadcast to her. Most focus on the more well-known Tudor women such as Henry's unfortunate queens. Glad that Anne Askew's story is getting the attention in deserves.

I have such great admiration for Anne Askew. I don't think brave is a strong enough word for her.
Also, I don't think you're crazy (what even is crazy?) for getting emotional when you discuss the stories of these women. It humanizes both them and yourself. I don't view time the same as distance, so even though their lives and these events occurred 500 years ago, we are still occupying the same physical, tangible space that they did. So it's not distance that separates us, only time.
When you did your deep dive on Anne Boleyn and you kept breaking down into tears, I was so touched by how much you care about her that I started to weep with you. Please don't apologize for showing us how passionate you are about the amazing women you study and the valuable content you create for us ❤

This period was so interesting because it brought a completely new spiritual consciousness. Anne Askew was a great part of this shift.

Thank you for this piece. Anne Askew is inspirational and shows how strong women can be. Her end is nothing less to say than gruesome and she deserves the upmost respect. This maybe a controversial statement but here it goes: The Tudors series (Season 4 episode 9) did an OK job of visually portraying how badly Anne was tortured as well as her determination through the whole ordeal. Not a 100% historically accurate of course, but it was good the series took this event into account given how "loose" other episodes were with historical events,

I like how Henry made a mess of things in so many ways and how the consequences rippled through other people's lives. His semi-reform created all the religious conflicts/differences that went on even after his death (I don't know if you're familiar with the Anglican Church, but to this day they seem to have a High Church - Catholic-ish with rich rituals/ Low Church - minimalist with little ceremony/ritual division). Or his "I'm going to put Mary and Elizabeth in the succession, but I won't legitimize them" position (basically these were directly contradictory, because as bastards Mary and Elizabeth shouldn't have been included in the succession legally, it was illegal to include them, but he forced the law through) which led to the 1553 crisis, which also led to more people dying. Even after his death, this man continued to get people killed and ruin lives.

Beautiful telling of Anne Aschew's story Estelle. I believe the belief that got Anne into the most trouble was denying the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation. The main reason she was executed. Along with her possible ties to Catherine Parr. As a Protestant Christian she is an inspiration to me. I saw the movie Firebrand recently and thought it did her and Catherine Parr justice. ❤

It's ok to get emotional. I also felt that when I read about Jane Grey and what was done to her. And yes, I was also surprised (I still am) that a teenage girl living almost 500 years ago could have an emotional impact on me. I admire some historical figures, but there was always a barrier. Jane and her sisters, Katherine and Mary, are the only ones who made me feel for them and cry for them.

Anne Askew gets far more of a storyline in the movie than in the book. However, The Tudors took far more care with the true history of Catherine Parr than Firebrand (the movie, not the book). I was extremely disappointed.
