I think lithium isn't used as much because the doctors are encouraged by the drug companies to use the more expensive meds and possibly get financial incentives . It's isn't about what's best for the patients anymore it's all about the money.
Lithium gave me a horrible side effect of inexplicable discomfort which made want to crawl out of my own skin. It was worse than the mania. I take Quetiapine instead now. Medications effect each person differently.

A completely new narrative in the text books will save people's lives. The old narrative itself is a death sentence.
