      I would have *preferred* to have Coraline going around by herself. I don't like this necessity of adding unnecessary characters. Plus...she already had the cat.She talked to *him* in the book!She didn't NEED Wybie...and that's why he ultimately does nothing relevant to the plot...because he was not supposed to be there from the very beginning!With or without him the plot stays exactly the same.

    Wybie is like the cat. I've noticed that particular thing. The fact that he is so close to the house, and knows so much more, means the Other Mother will never be able to replicate him without consequences. Like him being silent, compared to the cat that travels between the worlds.
    Also, with how real world Wybie gestures like the cat, and how the cat said he and Other Wybie "talk in our own ways of how unlike a mother the other mother is" it's clear they have a connection between the two worlds and whenever Coraline cruelly gets defensive and in denial, the other Wybie gets hurt because Wybie kept his mouth shut. Wybie is the words. Other Wybie is the Actions.

    • @kyrauniversal
      @kyrauniversal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      @@someonebla6021 You know how people say actions speak louder than words? Whenever Wybie tried to explain himself, Coraline would tell him off. When Other Wybie pulled her out of the mirror prison, she had her back turned so she couldn't push him away. It shows progression of her listening to the real Wybie, until she literally kicks him out of the house. By then, Other Wybie could do nothing to save her, but remained a reminder. A flag on the pole. (Also, thank you. I enjoy my artistry through multiple things. Writing these thoughts this way comes, oddly natural to me. I also write scripts for my own things sometimes, it just gets harder to put paragraphs like that down.)

    Wybie is one of my favorite characters who really deserves more recognition and love. I've always felt that he has some level of anxiety and he suffers from something but I'm not sure what. He is always crouched and hunched over as if he's afraid of something either that or like me he has scoliosis, something Other Wybie doesn't seem to have. It hurts me that his parents named him Wyborne. His parents so obviously hate him and have deserted him, leaving him unloved and feeling, like book Coraline, alone. He has no friends of his own age and has grown up for 12 years without anyone to talk to other than his sassy and needy grandmother and of course the cat which is why he and the cat have a strange deep bond. Also I'd like to clarify it is perfectly normal for a boy to like creepy dead things like bugs and snakes and even rats, especially one who is sheltered and frightened and alone. That's my take on sweet little Wybie, hope it wasn't too long for ya. Remember folks.... Stay spooky.

      I actually had a hanged back too but when I firsf watched the movie (now I've been working out for a while and it has improved) but back then thta small detail made me strangely relate to wybie xD. Though getting to the point, I always felt like he was nervous too, like he isn't really looking directly at Coraline whole talking to her most of the time as if he doesn't want his expression to give away that he is lying. Couple that with the alarming implications of Coraline moving in when Mrs Lovat elegidly doesn't allow kids to go near the house and that builds a solid case for someone with malicious intend potentially wanting forcing him to lure Coraline in. He gave her the doll too. What could be going on?

    Whybie is the cheerful balance in this film of the negatives: all the adults are mean, oblivious or evil, and Coraline is snarky and rude. Of course, she's only mean because she's moved away from her two friends, and her home that she was comfortable in. Her parents are too busy, the neighbors are REALLY strange and can't get her name right, and she's going to be going to a school that wears uniforms. Then there is Whybie whose manners are so foreign to her, she finds him frustrating since he comes off as strange, awkward and kinda creeperish. She's trying to get used to living in a really old house and this guy just keeps popping up.
    Their first meeting didn't help her image of him either.

      Yeah I'm speculating a bit, but that's how I understood the scene and the character. I mean, the girl likely dyed her hair blue to be unique, so I see her as wanting to stand out in a school that's kind of conformist in it's uniform color pallet of two shades of grey, and I speculate her old school didn't have uniforms

      It's all there in the novel, where other humans isolated her and only the cat provides company. It becomes worse in the end since the other mother's right hand isn't destroyed; it simply dropped down the well after coraline baited it with the key. I agree that Wybie allows the writers to have Coraline say what she is thinking out loud for the viewer to hear, which is something the book could do easily as it is normal to always have the main characters thoughts known to the reader.

    wybie is definitely a great addition to the movie. firstly, giving coraline a companion (other than cat, who although important, doesn't show up that often nor is able to help in certain ways as he's only a cat), making the movie more engaging than just having a lone heroine (hard to do so when not just through words). and secondly, how he showed how coraline felt as it'd be difficult to portray that in the movie. ahh love your analysis, great video as always! :D

    i love wybie, he’s welcoming to Coraline, helps propel the story, and is just a nice familiar face. I cant see the movie being the same without him, this is one of the instances where I regard the movie and the book in different ways and contexts. The book is creepy and atmospheric, the movie does that same thing but in a different way, it’s a movie. Books create a picture in your mind whereas movies show you it.

    There’s lots of people that say the movie gave them nightmares as a kid, but for me the movie made me feel not alone (don’t know how to explain it). The book made me feel like there was a way out (don’t feel comfortable explaining).
    I most definitely did get nightmares while reading the book, you shouldn’t read it before bed, but when I was done reading it I got the sense that there was a way out.

    Coraline never particularly scared me when I was growing up, but the one scene that actually scared me was that scene of Wybie’s clothes flying on the flagpole.
    It made me uncomfortable and sad, I was really surprised when I found out that Wybie wasn’t in the book, because he’s such a big part of the movie.
    While I do prefer the movie (which is unusual for me, I normally enjoy the books over the movies.) I do enjoy seeing the differences between the two mediums.

I read your question wrong a little- the way she got coralines appearance was by the rats telling the other mother what Coraline looked like

    Wybie allows Coraline to have someone to bounce off of. It is sad she's so harsh to him, but I do understand her. She is genuinely kind of a brat and he didn't make the best first impression to be fair. The expressions Other Wybie gives just makes him a gold mine of information even lacking a voice.

  • @billchiper4422

    Grandma is also in the book. Because she lost her sister, she doesn't want Vivi to come near the house. Wibby said that usually the grandmother does not bring the house to families with children. Maybe the grandmother wanted to bring a family with a child, you should "sacrifice" him to the other mother, you should protect Wibby. Only I put the red flags that Coraline's mother has: 1. She makes the same movement with her hand as with the other mother. 2. Coraline's father is very controlled by her like in the other world. 3. When Coraline wanted to open the door, she knew exactly where to look and which key to take.

    I never understood why Coraline was so mean to Wybie, like, from the get-go. I never saw the creep factor she did, but the only other kid nearby who tried his hardest to make her feel welcome, even after she abuses him. Then again, I never truly connected with Coraline. She always felt too selfish and mean-spirited. I never saw the good nature in her, and the crying for her parents always felt unearned to me, but that’s just my opinion.

    In what way did wybie understand coraline in the slightest? He thought she was crazy. He also didn't listen to her. He stalked her just to patronize her about water witching. Did you see the look he gave when he intentionally called her the wrong name right in the beginning? But she's the angry one so automatically she's the dick, right? It's not as if anger is a natural emotion when we're being treated appallingly or anything. Oh wait...

      It was more just that he was the only other child. Even if he didn't listen to her, he didn't wave her off or ignore her completely like her parents, and interacting with him gave her a chance to be a kid while she was in a new place and feeling alone and off-center.

    • @lulolie
      @lulolie ปีที่แล้ว

      And on the calling her crazy bit........without any context, she *does* sound crazy. Understandable that she's upset about not being taken seriously on what she's going through, but she's talking about talking cats, spying dolls and alternate worlds and meeting his grandmother's missing sister. You'd think she's crazy too.

    Lmao a woman on tiktok blocked me because I didn’t agree wybie was a useless character. Yeah Coraline might be more independent in the book and introverted and smart and less bratty but wybie isn’t completely useless and he doesn’t make her really that less independent, she is still very independent in the movie.

    • @rainmabon8232
      @rainmabon8232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wybie dosent even really take that much away from Coraline's independence and intelligence. Sure he does help her out here a there but ultimately it is still almost entirely her.
      And even though Coraline dose become enchanted with the Beldame's illusion she does still question it at points even without the concerns of Other Wybie and is still the one to ultimately reject it without anyone telling her explicitly she is in danger.
      That being said. Anyone that says Wybie dosent serve a purpose to the movie or that dosent enrich are just being book snobs "MoViEe BAD!!!!!"
