What if a I told you a great and potentially dangerous force in Coraline was both overlooked and underfoot? Well, you KNOW I'm going to tell you just that! After more digging into the Coraline book, I've spent (probably) way too long staring at and decoding the whispery Rats' Chants. Why? Well... I think they are the key to something greater in the Other World. This is a Coraline theory that relies heavily on the book, and upon a previous theory on this channel (the one about the Other Mother and the Most Ancient Corridor Beast). I cannot get the high squeaky whispery rat voices out of my head... and now... maybe you'll be under their spell, too?

The "we were here before you fell" could be refering to the well, as there is a theory that the well was the original portal and the Beldam fell down it
Yeeesss I watched theory videos (don't remember channel) where they explained the other mother was just a normal person the found her way to the other world so that tying in with the falling line is plausible
@@belle6624 that might be the theoriser he's amazing!! Definitely recommend his vidioes
@@mollygarrigan6763 it is
Didn't the rats work for the Beldam in the book though? What if they try and plan to overthrow the Cat/Vermin because he's the one controlling both worlds. Afterall he can zap in and out and predatory wise he is higher
I saw a theory that the Beldam didn't fell, but was drowned in it for being a witch.

True Sadness your profile picture is giving me anxiety
As a massive fan of grunge music videos, it's candy to the eyes for me.
The fact that they keep stressing their body parts “we have tails we have teeth” and “we have nerves” it’s almost like they’re telling the other mother “we are real living beings even if you don’t treat us like we are.” Like the other mother always uses them as pawns and they’re saying “we can see we can feel, we are /alive/ and we won’t tolerate being treated this way anymore.”
ooo :O
Wow😳
i absolutely love the expansion of this. the rats are a huge central character and scary but beautiful representation of what its like to overcome trauma. i personally love this movie because my mom was abusive, so seeing a character i love so much, and the other world that i view as the world my mom wanted me to live in and hid from everyone else (the abusive household no one knew or talked about). i see the rats as a good thing. they come off as evil and maniacal, disgusting and disloyal, and i see to it that imagery is from the point of view of the other mother. any attempt to break free of the abuse is a bad thing to her, and a terrifying concept as a child. you want to please your parents in every way you can, even if it means letting yourself be abused, so it makes sense that to coraline, the rats seem scary, but she isnt toally avoidant of them either.
The rat revolution
I think at some point
In the video she was sayin the same, and I think yor right
'Awesome video. I once heard someone refer to the rats as 'demons', and then I began to wonder. If the chants are addressed to the (human) denizens of our world, what if the line 'before you fell' refers to the Biblical Fall of humanity, with the rats being demons who were the first to 'fall' and now intend to 'rise' from 'underneath'? If by underneath they mean the Other World, what if it is a kind of Hell? After all, the Devil cannot create but can only imitate and parody what already exists, just like the Other Mother... Gaiman is no stranger to theological connections (see Good Omens or The Sandman).
wow. that is a really good theory *mind blown*
I have actually seen a demon that looked like the rats, so that's truly creepy. 😣
Just what I was thinking!
The "we are many" part is very recognizable to me and it made me think of legion from the Bible. Very very creepy. Here's what I got from the internet.
The Christian New Testament gospels of Matthew (8:28-34), Mark and Luke describe an incident in which Jesus meets a man, or in Matthew two men, possessed by demons who, in the Mark and Luke versions, when asked what their name is, respond: "My name is Legion, for we are many."

One of Lovecraft's most famous tales is the Rats in the Walls... the rats from Coraline sound pretty similar, maybe they're part of the being that lives in the corridor as well? Since the corridor can't move that much and seems ancient and slow, almost dormant, they might be the beings who do the work for him or something like that! Like little minions of an eldritch god

Man stuff like this, makes me wish there be a Coraline sequal either book, movie, or both.
I HIGHLY DOUBT THERE WILL BE A SEQUEL
With that said I LOVE CORALINE
I always just thought that all of their chants were about humanity. We, as a species, have kind of risen to power, being the dominant force on the planet, but rats have existed for longer than us, scurrying around in the dark unseen, but in more numbers than we could ever fathom, and given how resilient they are, I think it’s safe to say that they’ll be alive well after we’ve all perished.
AbitFrank's character design looks similar to Coraline's (actually I think her hair is the only thing they have in common xD).
Yeah the entire channel has a very Coraline-esque vibe but that could be because I found her though Coraline obsessing
God your such a good narrator, your voice is perfect for these creepy videos,
Your splendid narration along with brilliantly stylised animation makes for an utterly captivating and unique experience.
Not to mention the interesting topics you cover.
Coraline is creepy to me because it feels like a reacurring dream that slowly mutates as time passes into a very unsettling nightmare.
It feels like the rats are mocking the other mother when they talk about their bodies, like they keep saying that they have eyes and nerves and whatnot, almost like they’re bragging about their independence since the other mother didn’t create them
Anyone else just realize that the first chant is also used in the "The Last Dogs" books when Max, Rocky, and Gizmo met the Rat King?
I love the “Rats, man!” Design! Thats my favorite
This all honestly sounds like a parallel to Revelation and the end times.
I like how your mind works.
@@ambergathings7160 thank you! I appreciate this :)
Your Coraline series is awesome, and I totally agree with the theory that there's a bigger lovecraftian monster the door and tunnel are part of. I always interpreted the rats' songs as being directed at Coraline though, if only because of how the timing of the first and second songs are placed in the book. The first song says 'we were here before you rose, we will be here when you fall', which I agree saying Coraline has 'risen' here doesn't make much sense, I think it's more establishing the other world as a place below the real world. It's the rats' motivation, that they see Coraline as better and higher than them either because she has the key to the doors, or just because she lives in the real world and not the creepy void of the other world. So they steal the key and wait for her in the other world, and when she arrives they tell her 'we were here before you fell, you will be here when we rise'. Meaning she's fallen now, and the main thing Coraline has done since the last song is traveling through the tunnel to the other world, and that the other world is below her world/she is no longer better than them. And they threaten to leave her here in the other world and rise themselves into the real world. Presumably to roam free and eat a bunch of people, I guess, given how much they like their teeth. Which is what the last song is about, but you already talked about that- you just didn't mention the forshadowing the first song is doing, which I always thought was cool about the rats' songs on a re-read. Also, the audiobook of Coraline is both red by Neil Gaiman and has a version of the rats' song by Steven Meritt of the Gothic Archies that is very good and creepy, probably the best version of the story including the comic and the movie version, plus Neil has the most soothing voice ever
0:17 I'm a brave brave soul.

I read this book a long time ago for credit at school and DID NOT REMEMBER how creepy the subtext was. I forgot how Lovecraftian Adjacent this story is.
It reminds me of a theory I saw where it talked about how the rats could convince Coraline to become the new "other mother" which makes it really creepy!

Could the rats have been the fur that Coraline eventually felt lining the tunnel, or what was following her? The rats could have been all over the walls, waiting to strike or rise or some such.

*How did you know o-O*
I was JUST watching about coraline!
In the video Abitfrank just touches on the idea that maybe the rats are trying to make some creature like in Stranger Things, witch is why they chant about eyes tails etc. In stranger things there were rats ‘evil rabid rats’ who were possessed by a very strong force and eventually had their bodies (along with the bodies of people), used to make a creature to give that force a body. Maybe the ‘something larger’ that Abitfrank talks about is something like this
Does anyone know if the creator/s of Stranger things were inspired or something by coraline?
It’s prob just a coincidence or whatever
Me reads book thinks it's a creepy poem the rats said.
Abitfrank- nope it be something bigger.

I think the creature that is the corridor, is ALSO the rats, both sort of serve the Other Mother, while clearly having their own agenda.
Yes. They are not a creation but a tool or ally
The effort that goes into all of these videos is so noticeable, really quality stuff!
maybe the rats are the souls of the people that the Other Mother has devoured to create the world. Hence why they would get what they deserved, and why they would have been down there since before Coraline fell.
i’m so happy u uploaded i just got home from school and it really calmed me down 🥺
please make more coraline stuff, abitfrank! all your coraline videos have beautiful animation, a little dark comedy, and excellent observations.
I think the Coraline world is connected to another book of Gaiman's, The Ocean at The End of The Lane. It goes a lot more into depth about Gaiman's worldbuilding, what lives in those worlds, and also has an interdimentional cat. ;) And it's a very good read, regardless of if it's connected!
‘But today, or night. You brave brave soul!’
Me watching at night : Haha, I’m in danger.
What if the rats made the other mother and controling her without her knowing it
My theory:
The Corridor Creature (which is what I'm calling it) is what is possessing the rats. It's their "hive mind". The Creature got annoyed at the irritating parasite inside of it and sent in some parasites of its own in order to stop her from stealing its victims, or eject her altogether. Hence why the rats were running off with the third soul - they were planning on bringing it to the Creature and luring Coraline in along with it.
Rubie Evergreen That doesn’t make sense because they eat already had a soul.
"We are old and you are young
You grow slow and they grow faster

I love how the thumbnail looked like Coraline was trying to cosplay as a fortune teller with the Other Mother’s rats..
Please tell me that I’m not alone in seeing that...
And right when I thought there was nothing scary left in the Coraline-Verse..
Abitfrank, can we just get a whole audiobook of Coraline narrated by you? If that was a thing I would SO buy it! Judging by this video your voice is perfect for it, especially with the effects on the rats' voices!
You should look into the book version of The Phantom of the Opera. It has some great chilling moments and settings.
The rats being are being possessed by the ancient spirit? Maybe they were kidnapped from the real world as tools, since they actually bleed and are not the Other Mother's button eye creations. The Other Mother could have been the ancient beings own creation, like she had to lure its prey in by convincing the children to stay in the other world as it's meal or else that ancient being would destroy the other mother as it died ((ahh yes, very spooky)). Your Coraline videos make me love both the book and the movie even more! :3

I love how her merch advertisements don't take up half of the video
More Coraline videos plz!!! I love them so much!
I woke up early for thisssss... So effin' worth it
When I heard the first verse, I was actually thinking it was referring to humanity as a whole, not just Coraline. It’s the whole “cockroaches will survive when we kill ourselves with our atomic bombs” sort of deal. The rats are singing about their longevity and how no matter what happens, they’ll still be around gnawing on the pieces.
As for the second verse, I don’t really know if it makes a connection, but rising after falling made me think of Steven Kings It: with the talk of “we all float down here”, and when you think about it, the other mother has a LOT of similarities to Pennywise, only she doesn’t seem to have any power outside her world, and her requiring her victims to agree to having their eyes replaced, to Pennywise being able to just grab and drag poor Georgie to never be seen again. Like I said, I doubt there’s any connection beyond they both tap into the same aspects of horror, but it did make me think “Fall= enter the other world, rise = float”
As for the final verse, I do think you have a point of the rats just working for the other mother until they can get power, or possibly betraying her, but I also originally thought that it was a verse about them being the spies, and a sort of “we saw everything you’ve done” sort of karmic thing as well.
By the way, I need to tell you the videos you’ve made got me to actually listen to an audiobook of the original story, and I had a thing I noticed, forgot if I mentioned it to you, or just on twitter: the cat actually gets scared once he notices he can’t sense the exits he usually uses. It’s why Coraline has to carry him, when before he refuses to even let her approach him, and when she throws him at the other mother, he panics to claw her, so when she gets home and apologizes, the cat not only lets her touch him, but actually curls up on her and purrs- I think up until that point, the cat didn’t really care that much about Coraline, and his helping her was just cause the other mother wouldn’t have liked it. At that point, I think he genuinely sees her as a friend, since she was able to keep a cool head and get them both out at a time when HE thought they were lost.
It's literally 3 am I don't know if it's a good idea to watch this but... eh
I love ur merchandise cause your colors are amazing
What's funny is that we spent a week to read the book and then watched the movie on Halloween , perfect timing English teacher :3
I only found you yesterday looking at the origins of movies/fairytales and I already love you
Abother Coraline animation theory? Thanks! And happy Halloween!
Alao hey! Mayve the rats didnt want to share and wanted to lure Coraline to the attic to eat her themselfs before the Other mother does! Maybe they also used one of her creatinons (Other Mr Bobo) to do so?
Happy Halloween 2.0!!!
I just realised coraline is light 7-8 or something around that age in the book.. that’s so scary
I also think they wanted revenge on the other little kids and that’s why they want to keep there souls with them. And needed the other mothers help. But of course wants to over throw the other mother. I don’t think the rats really want to kill coraline but want her to stay and kill the other mother.
More more please i love these video's
I feel like the rats (the book ones) are like the cat; creatures who can go between the two worlds and have free will. Also, they can't/won't talk in the real world. Maybe they only speak in the pyramids because their voices are too small to be heard when alone.
Idk its just something I came up with while drawing.
