I JUST NOW realised what "running into hurricanes" could mean in that song. At first I was like "why the hell would u 'run into a hurricane' if u wish to be well and healed? wouldn't that be kinda contradictionary??" And yea maybe it COULD mean that even tho she tries to get better and ignore the anxiety in her she always ends up thinking about those bad emotions no matter what she does, so she's almost like 'trapped' in the chaos. HOWEVER I realised it could even more likely be a metaphor for the "eye of the storm", the peace within the chaos. She acknowledges that in order to find peace, to find comfort within herself she must run towards the storm. She must face her fears to overcome them. Much like in therapy, where you have to dig and dig to your trauma and all the shit u've gone through to find a way to heal, to move on and let go; which is what the album is all about!!!
finally someone appreciating and reacting to Forgiveness the same way as i do!! there's no way i can express how phenomenal this song is, lyrically and sonically. pure insanity!!
I totally agree! I reacted to her album on my channel just last night. Discovering this album felt very therapeutic to me. If you want to check out my reaction- I would appreciate it! Regardless.. She is nothing short of spectacular. Also going to be checking out her first album Sawayama very soon!
I’m not even going to lieeee the singles had me worried but listening to the album w/ headphones in order was such an experience I’m hoping it gets nominated for AOTY bcccc 😍😍 it’s audible crack i swear
As someone who has been battling health and trauma issues for the last decade and has made some massive progress really but is still struggling/feeling trapped this album tore my heart out in the best possible way, its immediately become my go to "bad day" album to bring my fight back. Fantastic reaction love your input and earnest response.
Just wanna say your reaction is making me cry…. Just like the album itself. Im in my early twenties and ive been thinking so so much about my inner child the last years and omg… this album is being literally therapy for me and makes me so happy seeing people loving it as much as i did
It’s amazing to see how passionate you are about the music, even bursting with emotion at songs you’ve listened to many times! You also gave me a stronger appreciation for the cohesive story and progression of the album, before watching I feel like I was more thinking of the individual songs not so much as a whole. :) Oh and you’re so right, all these songs are gonna be amaazing live.
I think shes saying she'll be frankenstein because that was the name of the doctor that made the monster. So if shes frankenstein she can fix the monster.
Absolutely love this album. Masterpiece from start to finish. I also have an album recommendation it’s called ‘Magdalene’ by fka twigs and it’s stunning💙
Finally someone from the UK reacting to this bc I know there’s UK genres (like garage, Matt tong) in there that I won’t fully pick up! And you talking about your parents’ financial struggles really got to me 😭😭😭😭😭 every time rina or anyone talks about their parents sacrifices and seeing their parents’ imperfect, traumatizing parenting as just a product of them having other real pressures on them living under capitalism it GETS TO ME SO BAD. Also not sure if you’ve heard this before but you look a lot like Tom Holland 😄
I really think you’d love Tamino! No one ever really reacts to him, he’s got such a great low voice while being able to hit haunting high notes. He’s completely authentic and unique and I’d love to see what you think of his debut album, this year he’s coming out with his newest album with just a few singles left!
My interpretation of Frankenstein is that it’s directed at someone she’s in a relationship with, like how we all build expectations of finding the right person to “fix” or “complete” us. Like she’s finally found someone who cares for her but her trauma still doesn’t let her feel like a whole person so, instead of coming to her relationship thinking of herself as a complete person, she thinks she’s a pile of pieces her partner has to put back together.
imaging is talking about being gaslight by someone & feeling like she’s losing touch what’s really true or what’s just being feed to her as the truth. my fav from the album. i teared up one the 1st listen, lol.
Love how Rina is making me meet great people without even knowing. You're so likeable!! (; And this album simply ate. Imagine having Holy - Your Age - Imagining not only in your album, but in your entire discography. Imo, the best segment in the project, for sure.
Imagining hit home. I have OCD, so that's something I deal with sometimes and it completely destroys you. Like, you kind of know it's not a real situation; it's your head playing with you, creating fake situations, but still, the anxiety takes control of you. Thank God I'm medicated lol
Also, the bit about "I don't know if Mercury's in retrograde" in Imagining is 10000% a reference to Mercury by Bloc Party. She said at the gig on Wednesday that she wanted Frankenstein to have a Bloc Party vibe, so she asked Matt Tong to play drums for it (honestly iconic). I think it's safe to say she's a big fan of Bloc Party, especially since Kele Okereke is another openly queer person of colour in the rock-adjacent music scene, too. I'd LOOOOVE to see a Kele/Rina collab happen...
Hurricanes actually also has massive Bloc Party vibes too, I think she may have been revisiting A Weekend In The City when she was writing this album (it also happens to be one of my favourite albums 😁)
48:02 Im not sure how you reached that conclusion, but it's actually from the perspective of a mother/father finally accepting thier gay son and his partner (john).
Heyyy I just wanted to come here and ask if you would react to Joshua Bassetts Ep called “sad songs in a hotel room” it comes out September 23rd so in exactly a week. It’s only 6 songs long. He wanted to release it before his album. I wanted to give a little back story to it bc it’s important. So he just played his first ever 3 live shows and he played every song from the ep except the title track so that it the first song on the ep and the only one we haven’t heard. 2. So to start the song LA he played it early last year for a virtual concert and put that on TH-cam but never officially released it. To keep it vague this song was just written in a time when he was going through a lot yk in every aspect of his life kind of at the beginning of all that drama and just when so much happened. It’s just more about mental health. 2. The song smoke slow was a single released last month (that’s all I’ll say😭) 3. Used to it, this song we hadn’t heard anything about it but he played it at his live shows but let’s not focus too much on that aspect of the song and more so what he was going through in the song. ( I don’t wanna speculate but it does seem to be about Olivia Rodrigo. I don’t know for certain and I hate saying that bc speculation is what got him into this mess but at the same time I want ppl to understand) 3. Lifeline, this song he teased in may and played at the live shows. It’s a song to his mom when he was dying in the hospital last January yk all that awful timing and the drama happening while he was dying. But yeah he wrote it for his mom about his hospitalization and honestly it’s HEAVY. I also prefer the live version. It’s so good live. 4. All in due time he also teased on tik tok in may (he also teased smoke slow) but basically this song is about his mental health during last year when things were super rough for him. Now I’m just going to quote a few things he said about the ep☺️ "It's really one of my favorite projects, actually, it is my favorite project I've ever put out to date, and I stand behind every song. Each one means something completely different." Joshua describes his upcoming EP "Sad Songs In A Hotel Room" as a "stepping stone" to his first album. “Sad Songs In A Hotel Room comes from a transient period of my life, when I was constantly moving from hotel to Airbnb to a friend’s place, while also juggling some intense personal growth and change” “Each of the songs in this EP tell a different part of the story from that time; each with a different perspective. In some ways, these songs feel like a bridge from one chapter of my life to the next, and I felt an urgency to put them out as I finish my debut album.” Among all his past projects, from a Disney+ series to a multitude of singles, Joshua Bassett says his upcoming release is his favorite one yet. star did not detail the specific inspiration behind each track, although he noted that the songs are "authentic, honest" and something fans haven't seen from him before. He said some songs were written as far back as two years ago, while others were composed six months ago. HOWEVER: if you do decide to react to to this ep it’s very important you know full context and everything so to start he did 2 GQ interviews last year one in June and the other in December. In those interviews he talks about several things he was going through that is important to know to know before listening. If you wanted I’d also suggest reacting or at least listening to his Ep from last December called crisis/secret/set me free. The songs touch on the drama with Olivia Rodrigo, their relationship, his SA and his hospitalization. Also he did an interview With Zach sang where he went even more in depth about so many different things. It’s a great watch and I highly recommend. This Ep is going to touch on so many different parts of his life that in order to understand you have to know what’s gone on. ( let’s not mention any names tho I beg.)
you're one of the only reactors i've watched that acknowledge the queer and generational issues presented in this album. a lot of people just don't get it. thank you
