Back when we understood it was a comedy and not to be taken seriously, and was also to give teenage boys nude women to look at when porn wasn't as easy to come by. Or come to, as the case may be.
Good thing Betty ultimately fell for Louis after the reveal in the..um…”moonwalk” scene, otherwise Louis could have been doing serious time in prison for rape.
@@alwrigI love the idea of a cheerleader finding out that a nerd is a better lay than her boyfriend. I'm sure the filmmakers could have made their boning consensual without losing the raunchiness. Let it still be two horny people who want to fuck, but minus the deception.
The technology in this movie was incredible for the time. Unfortunately I cant see this type of movie ever being made today. My brother and I (he was 11 and I was 10) had to sneak up and watch this.
I'm surprised they actually liked it. I was too young to have seen the Review, but I'm really shocked they saw the humanity of the characters in this movie, something the second film didn't have.
This honestly might be pound for pound the funniest movie ever made. Up there with Animal House and Blazing Saddles. Not looking at it for depth or anything else just laughs unlike most film critics. The film unfortunately could never be made today unless it was totally neutered and watered down. Half of the gags would be way toned down. I mean I understand the Lewis sleeping with Betty Child's scene under false pretenses would need to be cut out and is closer to a modern day porn film scenario. Lol. The 80s in general just seemed like a lot more fun and less p.c.
Haha yeah. I saw it for the first time a few years ago with my cousin, he’s seen it heaps and absolutely loves it. I thought it was heaps funny but I said I don’t think you could get a away with making it today lol

I used to watch this show every time it came on. We don’t need these amazing kind of critics nowadays because all of today’s movies are redone, crap, digital bs, regurgitated nonsense with no real entertainment like we used to have decades ago.
I caught this movie on cable when I was ten or so. I have nothing against nerds, or anyone else, but I just remember this movie giving me a really bad feeling.

@@kyoijin_bois3016 Hahahahaha. It's hilarious. I am fucking weird then. It's a GREAT movie and the outrage of the snowflakes makes it even funnier knowing how offended they get about this "reprehensible" movie. One of my favourite films. It is gloriously and wonderfully politically incorrect and all the better for it.
Back when you could make raunchy jokes and people understood they were just jokes in a fictional product, not an endorsement of real life sexual violence.
Mortablunt It’s partially because comedies grew more intentionally mean-spirited in the years since and young people today are so used to seeing that they can’t tell that apart in older movies where that wasn’t really the intention.
Growing up in the 70s and 80s, it wasn't totally "fiction". But, I understand what you are saying. I remember that era being fun, no matter what angle you looked at it. The girls were just as bad as the boys.
The obvious conclusion is that Siskel and Ebert liked the Movie because they know they are also Nerds. Nothing wrong with that. Actually, if they were around today and the Movie just came out- they would be forced to give the Movie a bad Review. Even that scene where the Nerds invade the Evil Sorority that inflicted a lot of Cruelty on them, the Feminists would talk about how dare they break into a House full of Females and see some FEmales naked. The Nerds should have been arrested for seeing Naked girls and their other actions. Also, where the Keith Carradine puts on the Darth Vader Mask to have sex with the Pretty Blonde Girlfriend of the Head Evil Jock, that does not go over well at all with so called Modern Feminist Sensibilities.
Every other teen sex-comedy: "These movies hate women. Every joke is on a woman. Even when male characters suffer, it's still somehow an attack on women. Everyone involved in the production only got into cinema to attack women." Movie with an actual rape-gag: "Funny flick." Critics and constancy are like oil and water.
Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. Movies are not about what they are about, they are about how they are about it. Hence why Halloween is a classic slasher film while thousands of cheap imitations are not.
@@jedijones A good point actually, but in a way, it supports my argument. I saw ROTN when I was around 19 or so (exactly the right age for it) and found the panty-raid and "gentle rape" scenes uncomfortable. Yet, strangely, I like 'Porky's'. A contradiction? I thought so. For a while I couldn't figure it out, but then it came to me-- in 'Porky's' the joke is on the peepers; they suffer comedic repercussions for their actions, whereas in ROTN sexual-assault is seen as heroic. Therefore, I would say that Porkie's is the less sexist of the two. There's even a girl who's in on many of the pranks; a token character sure, but that's more than the nerds movie bothered with.
Wow, they actually liked this film? I thought they'd tear it to shreds regarding how sexist and uncomfortable the jokes were (especially by today's standards). Disappointed.
Yeah, I think both of them were relatively aware of this kind of thing (compared to the general public back then), but their glossing over it reveals how much the world relied on womens’ silence back then which made them less keyed into recognizing it in movies like this. There were a lot of romantic plots then that were about “getting” girls rather than interacting with them, and I’m sure many a weary date, sister, and wife were accustomed to that just being part of the movies.
Without there being internet, social media, and cell phones, people were less uptight and carefree back then. A lot of comedy and college pranking, and just regular goofing around was considered mostly harmless fun, as long as no one was seriously hurt. Later on, with hazing, and sexual abuse of different natures, things got more out of hand and dangerous.
This is review is the reason why I hate Siskel & Ebert. They are willing to vomit criticism all over slasher films for being exploitative, and yet they are willing to look the other direction when it comes to Revenge of the Nerds. Hypocrisy pisses me off to no end.
