    this was almost exactly what i was looking for, im in the process of designing my first pc (i gave myself 6 months to do research and save up), and was wondering wether i could throw in a cheap old card, to get use out of some dvi/vga screens i have laying around, to use for simple things like watching youtube, or having documents up. i was considering to just use adapters before, but i have had very bad experiences with monitors properly working with adapters, so knowing this is at least somewhat possible is great!

    Benchmark a game using the gaming card, with and without additional GFX card. Would be interested to know if there's a (likely small) performance boost in the sense that the 2nd monitor is being taken care of.

    The Ultimate question in a summarized form.
    "Yes, You can use two graphics cards for a PC (However). I would recommend that you don't mix match the graphics cards as downloading two types of display Drivers can conflict with each other. Overall, Don't get rid of your old graphics card, If you computer provides you a second PCI-E 16 Slot, Buy a new one and you still can use the old one. It will register them both.
    (But I recommend using the same brand of the graphics card such as Nvidia with Nvidia(Old) Or AMD with AMD(Old) Generation cards. )
    The reason of why using the same Brand of Cards is that it will be able to register and keep things more appropriate for the system, So the System doesn't have to work harder on producing two different Drivers. But out of the box if you really wanted too, You can put two different graphics cards into a System, But as a professional, I Recommend that you don't use a graphics card that is AMD + Nvidia Mixed cards... Because, It can and will bog down your system and disqualify you to use SLI or Crossfire capabilities.
    The PCE-I 16 Slots are as intended. As long as your Motherboard supports the capability of Multi-Card functionality its Highly likely you can run two graphics cards JUST FINE.
    So long as you have enough power and do your research on what is compatible for the motherboard itself. But be warned however.. Just because you put in two different graphics cards for the functionality of "HIgher" performance" it doesn't work that way unfortunately unless you set up your cross fire or SLI capabilties. (Also) Most SLI or Crossfire capabilities require you to have the same card as its simplified on getting the most performance out of the graphics card, But really my opinion if you do run dual graphics... Mostly it is used in recording or editing software or Streaming capabilites if one card is better than the other.

    From what I've read, Windows 10 is still relying on the primary GPU for all video processing, and just relaying that through PCIe to whatever the second card is. So, if that is true, there would be no performance increase VS using 2 ports on the same GPU. You would basically just be adding another HDMI port to the system at the expense of the second card's idling power draw, PCIe bandwidth usage, and airflow reduction in the case.
    I'm not sure that would be worth it over getting a

      @@ignyte From my experience, you don't need to set anything. Just move the game window (the actual game play, not the client like Steam client) to the monitor who's display is being powered by the gaming GPU. Since the gaming GPU is providing the graphics power to that specific display, that's what will be used for the game window. Use the weaker GPU to power the non-gaming displays. I've done this w/ integrated graphics and a small GPU. I'm about to try what the youtuber did in this vid

    • @zerocal76
      @zerocal76 ปีที่แล้ว

      This isn't to save $ on an adapter cable like the youtuber said, its really for when your main GPU is all maxed out on videos ports. Currently have a RTX 3070 using all 4 ports and need to add a 5th monitor. So I either buy a $70 USB video adapter that's going to make the GPU and CPU work more or I add a small PCI-E-powered card like the one in the video (which I already have).

      You can daisy-chain display port. Since most decent GPUs have 3 DP and 1 HDMI, that's at least 7 monitors with the ports on 1 GPU.

    Thanks for making the vid on this topic!
    I decided to try it, because of the way My PC is set up.
    I'm using a 7.1 AV receiver, and sadly, My PC doesn't have an Optical output, so the sound is running through HDMI for quality reasons.
    It always bothered Me, that Nvidia CPanel recognized it as an additional display. Nvidia Inspector defaults were set to multi display mode and even though changing it to single display mode, it never kind of felt right... Anyways, I had a few old AMD's just sitting on the shelf, and decided I'd try connecting an old R7 250X 1GB to use for HDMI Sound & extra display. Pretty simple process to experiment with. RESULT - Smoother frametimes! Tried a few games out, and surprisingly, most of them played smoother than ever before... SotTR being an exception in My case.
    I didn't confirm, if it actually changed the fps, but frametimes are WAY SMOOTHER thanks to running 2 GPU's & TBH I'm happy with this kind of setup! :)
    Hopefully it stays this way, until I get a chance to upgrade MoBo & CPU ^^.
    After 2 hours spent on getting an answer about the functionality of 2 GPU's, I consider Your video to be most helpful, so Thanks again!

    RAM - 12GB

    I don't think its cheaper to run 2 GPUs rather than buying an hdmi to displayport adapter. If the second monitor is being used only for youtube or whatever, you don't need high refresh rates. That means you could buy a cheap adapter for like $5-$8. For two GPUs you'd need a PSU that's strong enough to power both of them while heavy gaming i presume and the electricity bill will rise too. I just don't see it being that efficient and worth the trouble.

    so you did not need to plug Crossfie or SLI (Scalable Link Interface) on the two video cards it seems except the two HDMI cables to the video cards. Curiously, IBM used to call video cards adapter cards.

    • @kordy6367
      @kordy6367 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crossfire or SLI was used for a multiple GPU, 1 Monitor setup where the screen split into parts which were rendered one per GPU. The interface you are talking about is called a bridge, its purpose was to transfer data between those cards so you wouldn't need to connect the second GPU to the monitor too.

    Yes and no! I have 2 monitors on one GPU and I want to add one more display tablet to my second GPU (both the same 1080 ti) The one that I connect to the second GPU...tho it works in terms of showing me stuff on display...can't use Photoshop, Blender etc. I get OpenGL errors...

    If you have 2 gpu with crossfire capable, disable it or dual video dont work. I have 2 RX570 and crossfire wont let me have 2 video outputs

    Can we use one monitor for CAD works(CPU intensive) having a Quadro card and another one for renderings(basically graphics intensive work) having a GTX card?

    • @dinkiethesink
      @dinkiethesink  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you use virtualization, yes, but if you dont it depends if the programs allow you to choose which GPU does the work.

    would this work with any 2 gpus? wanna get a card that has vga out to play older games meant for crt (mainly net play for dolphin emulator) . my roommate already has multiple crt monitors and i can use one. i think its a cheaper route then buying a 144 refresh rate monitor. someone told me on another videohaving 2 diffrent gpus can be harmful to the pc? they didnt elaborate though so im not sure if they knew what they were talking about. i currently have a 2060 super. any help would be greatly appreciated. i dont understand computers all that well

    • @dinkiethesink
      @dinkiethesink  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes I believe that would work if u find a VGA card that has the specs needed to play the games on the CRT.

    if i want to use 8 difference screens for present. can i user 2 quadro p1000? And which CPU and mainboard (gen11) can do that? thank you!

    • @dinkiethesink
      @dinkiethesink  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that is actually a very common use for those quadros, any mainboard with two physical 16X pcie slots should be fine for this use

    Great video man, I have been looking for this. One question: I have 3 monitors for my desk, And I have been looking for 3 more monitors for my simrig setup. So all I need is two different graphics cards for it to work? I only need 4 of the monitors to have good performance, The other two is just extra for web and stuff. I have two 970s atm but I am looking for gpu upgrade when I can get one :)

    I have a AMD 6700xt that I just purchased and I replaced my 970 Nvidia but now I may reinstall my 970 Nvidia and just use that particular card to watch movies on while I'm gaming on the same PC that's running the game on the 6700xt that will keep me from having to pay a lot more money for a 6900xt
