It’s somewhat unnatural how pleased I become to see you’ve posted a story. Thanks for your continued gifts Simon! And for not speaking through blue black lips 🙏🏽
They work quite well in the sweltering Costa Rican coastal rainforest, too. Though ice cubes melt within seconds and if any of our party suggested drawing their chairs closer to a roaring fire they’d be rewarded with genuine concern…thanks for this, Simon! Great fun, as always!
I been sick and the Absolute best medicine is Simon. This man puts such heart into his work that you really feel like your right there watching from this mans bed side. Sir Simon you must take a bow. You are a Master of your work and i highly doubt anyone can ever take that away from you. Some come close but just dont have the drive you do. I just went back to work. I can't wait to become a patron. You will be my first. I hope all is well.
Thanks, Simon Stanhope, for this truly scary ghost story by a Victorian literary prodigy whose life was apparently cut all-too-short at the age of 27. I listened to your matchless narration carefully and noted that the wife in this story is described as "that beautiful but sinful presence." Could it be that the doomed subject of this tale had unwittingly contracted a disastrous marriage with a demonic young woman known far away from this story's European setting as a "Churel"? According to Wikipedia, a Churel is "a mythical or legendary creature resembling a woman, which may be a demoniacal revenant said to occur in South Asia and Southeast Asia ... [and who ] is mostly described as extremely ugly and hideous but is able to shape-shift and disguise herself as a beautiful woman [ in order ] to lure men ...." ? But, no, on second thought, there's a good deal more that this story has to offer by way of a plot than that. I give up - but, even so, I thank you again, Simon, for reading it!
The thing I love about your TH-cam channel is the fact that I would probably have never have heard of some of these fantastic stories. Thank you. Please keep up the great work.
You portrayed the young surgeon and his patient so well. Thank you for an unusual and unfamiliar (to me) story. A treat better than the best chocolate. Happy holidays to you. 21:00
I delayed listening until I was sure not to be interrupted for even 30 minutes. I sat in my reclining chair and took in the story. Very nice, Mr. Stanhope. Thank you.
As one commenter suggested, you have such a unique and intentional way of speaking. I always feel I’m wherever the author and your voice send us. Well done!! Thank you Simon..
I'm deeply grateful for this haunting and beautifully narrated story. It's a rare treat to discover such a gem from the past, and your narration has done justice to Ada Buisson's intriguing work. 😍
I just wanted to say thank you so much for narrating these beautiful tales from the Edwardian and Victorian Eras. Some of my favorite stories come from these time periods. You do a lovely job! 💖English accents always make stories better. I'm from America so the only time I get to hear one is online.
Lot #978, Mr Bricknell, View of a manor house, this skelinton thing… carrying off the pore baby, Anningley Hall. (Now THAT would make a fit reading for a Christmas Eve ghost story)
A very interesting story with a most unexpected twist at the end. I was left thinking 'if only' - if only the young doctor had had the courage and compassion to sit beside his patient throughout his vigil, maybe even hold his hand to reassure him of human company, then the death might have been averted.
A fine story!! What an ending! Brilliant. Of course, excellently narrated, which is key to the story, since the book is not in my hands to read. But never mind, I couldn’t have imagined it as well as your performance.
What a powerful but strange story, and how well realized for us! Thank you! New to me are Ada Buisson, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and Belgravia magazine - for which introductions thanks as well! I look forward to your two Braddons - and am pleased to find lots of issues of Belgravia (including January 1868) scanned in the Internet Archive.
Hi, Simon. Thanks for taking time from all that chain rattling to give us story. Happy Christmas. I'm excited to hear this but I've been listening to a stave a night of A Christmas Carol
Thanks for your support Patricia. I guess from your comment that you may not have seen I put a short biography of the authors in the video description (underneath the video controls). This author is indeed no longer with us (actually true of all the authors featured on the channel), she had a short but promising career in the 1860s before her tragic early death. The Poe comparison is quite apt, I think, there are certainly echoes in this story
Just turned talking pictures on and a Ghost Story For Christmas playing M R James must be 70/80ties tv A cracking play For tv anyone else watched it or other story’s. I’ve first heard thanks to Simon

Your stories provide such comfort to me for my evenings. Love having a nice cup while listening to these on a cold winters night.

Ah the bictorians knew how to live those people. Punch and a chop, and 1000 pounds.
I love these readings. They are beautiful. I listen while alone in my bed... Wendy
Now, this one threw me. The end doesn't wrap...will listen again. Thank you, as ever.

Thank you. I enjoy these stories on a Winter evening in Britain.
Do people in other parts of the world appreciate them too?
It is SUCH a pleasure to listen to a story read by a professional actor!!!

You mean "the Mezzotint" by M. R. James. Yes, that's an excellent story to be suggested next.
Montagues finest , IMHO.
Perfect entertainment for a dark December night!
You are a gift from God. Your voice is amazing and it captivates me to no end. Thank you!
Aaaaand relax. Thank you Mr Stanhope.

Superb reading, as always. Love the story😊

Thanks for sharing.
Many thanks!
This author may not live anymore. I don't know. Thank you, Simon. Part of the writing reminds me of Poe. I hope that is the compliment intended.

Great naration, I just am not sure of the ending, can someone help? Was the mansion cursed and the thing wanted the wife as next victim. Thanks! ❤
Weird one. 🤔👍
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Creepily interesting story.
But I'm confused at the end. Was the wife the suspect?
(Spoilers): so did the wife kill the husband then?
Should have mentioned it was Lost hearts. Viz my last comment
Thanks for another great story.
