A lot of references to the rOtring Trio prior to this multi-pen, but there was a rOtring 600 even before that which looks nearly exactly like this with knurled grip. It's definitely less "engineered" than it was before. They definitely took a cheaper route with construction, although it still looks to be a pretty solid multi-pen. But one major disappointment for me: the "3" is "2+1"... 2 ballpoints plus 1 pencil. Why force this restriction? They should make each slot capable of housing a pencil. This way it would be possible if someone wants to install a 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm, and 0.7 mm instead of D1 ballpoint refills.
Good review. Ironically I understand why they chose not to have a blue in there as you in the German-speaking building/construction industry rarely use blue. Black and red are for marking up drawings or for note-making at meetings and the pencil is for sketching. I have to date not used the eraser in my Rotring pencils as it freaks me out how little eraser there is space for. The only pencil I think has enough eraser in it is the Faber castell grip plus. If you use a Rotring daily, you would not use its tiny eraser at the end. It would last a day max. This one goes straight onto my wishlist for Christmas :)

@@franxexcoel6170 I injected some silicone oil into the mechanism on mine and it feels great now. It feels like a fluid tripod head for videography if you’ve ever used one of those before. Buttery smooth
@@IAmNumber4000 wow. Good to know. I think it’s a defect or some misalignment on the mechanism? I can see some videos of 600 3in1 they can twist it smoothly without any effort. What do you think?
@@franxexcoel6170 I am not sure. I think the mechanism is just supposed to be like that, to increase feedback or something. Or they decided a better lubricant was too expensive or didn’t fit some other constraint of theirs. IMO they should all ship with silicone oil in the mechanism.
Ever tried a skill craft b3 aviator before? They're really popular among flight crew in the military. It's the most minimal/sleek multi pen I've ever used.
Yes and a very fragile pocket clip too, it broke in my pocket so easily just squatting down to pick up something heavy. I have an pocket clip of an old worn out Staedtler on it, a tough thing to manage to get on it.
I have an old Rotring Trio, and discovered that getting refills for it was pretty hard. Some would just fall out due to being too narrow. Others would not retract back into the pen due to the tip being slightly too wide. Even newly purchased rOtring own brand refills were not a great fit. I tried a Zebra gel D1 as a last resort and that was actually the best fit. However I wanted to try an Ohto needlepoint. It turns out you can cheat and nobody will know! Put the refill into the tube holder and then tape over it with scotch tape. The other downsides of the old Trio design are, it's very smooth and slippery due to absence of knurling, and the grip unscrews all the time. This new rOtring 600 3 in 1 looks like it will adress both of these issues with its glued on knurled grip. Thanks for the review!
I love the Rotring design but is there something available with a regular ballpen + stylus pen? Or maybe a "refill" with a stylus tip or something? I'm just getting confused looking for one and all I can find are pretty weird ones or super cheap ones. But I want a nice pen for my work but I do have to constantly switch between stylus and ballpen, yet I'm not working on a desk and don't want to take even more individual pens with me. Google definitely isn't a big help for me right now lol. Having a 3 in one with ballpen, stylus and graphite would be the absolute dream lol.
So I bought one of these back in the late 80’s and still have it so it is an original Rotring Newton. Loved this pen and have had fun with having friends over the last 30 years try and work out how to get each colour. Still has original ink cartridges and eraser. Remember paying over $130 for it back in the day but have no idea what it would be worth today. Any idea?
Can this be used as a multi pencil? In other words, can all the components be mechanical pencil? I have been using Rotring mechanical pencils for drawing for about 5 years now and I love them. I use three different lead sizes. It would be great if I could have them all in one.
More for collectors? I've got one on order because I want a more solid robust pen/pencil. I have a Skilcraft with a soft stylus at the end. The rubber fell apart and the pocket clip has bent and broke off. Having some other Rotring pencils like the Rapid Pro, I'm expecting a solid writing implement here.
Pretty close to the perfect pen! The only thing that could be better is making it a 3+1 although I'm not sure the cam mechanism could be made to work. Also, would be nice to have an eraser. Regardless, this has now replaced my Quattros in daily use, seems much more robust .
Jiminy no eraser for $50. Was excited about this but it woulnt replace my beloved edc Skilcraft B3 Aviator with no eraser. It does look solidly built though. So I imagine it would hold up to some hard use like as a construction work pen/pencil, which is what my B3 gets used for a bunch. If you could put a .07mm pencil insert in it, it might just be worth it for the extra assumed durability of the pen body and the more durable lead thickness for an all around hearty edc multipen.
In the video around 6:40 he shows the internals. The two pen refills are slid into a brass (gold looking) tube. The pencil part does not have this, so unfortunately it is not possible.
Does the 3in1 have tip wobble when writing with the pencil like the 800 does or is it completely solid like a regular 600? Also is it similar in weight to a 600/800 or does it have the heft of a rapid pro?
The tip wobbles more than Rotring 800 and much heavier. Not much engineering to any Rotring pencils TBH, like _Orenzo Nero_ nor _Zebra DelGuard_ . Only good for showing off.

Felt like I kinda got the same problem as you are. My 600 multipen can switch between the black and red D1 but cannot switch to the mechanical pencil, it got stuck in the tip area and won't rotate. I don't really know what's wrong with it because I checked it multiple times yet the problem remains unclear. So to use the mechanical pencil I have to open the mechanism and manually rotate it to the mechanical pencil, then insert it back inside the metal tube.

It still functions properly, but not well. It was never as smooth or easy to use as the original rOtring Trio (the smooth cylindrical gravity assisted model).
Now, that Trio has been with me since October, 1996 and aside from the slight difficulty of finding true rOtring D1 refills, still works like a champ!
Would look great in the camo, iron blue or even better - lava......
This 3 in 2 pen is really great! and amazing! but I still wander why that great german pen company decided to release such a good pen in Japan first! in that very hard and though japanese market! rather than on the really huge and more flexible american market! but americans could still get this very good and fine pen from some American internet special sellers! though!
I believe that their HQ is now located in Japan.
It's cool try the Aviator 3B
why can't they make it in germany
I think with the Newell acquisition this isn’t possible. Thought I believe the Japan manufacturing started before that.
Constantly living in fear of your rotring 600 3 in 1 pencil breaking is a first world nightmare.
Its 70Ł in the UK :(
Yikes. Not worth it
So cool😍
I’ve subscribed to you for like 6 times already, and youtube just keeps unsubscribing and I don’t know why 😡
That’s annoying. Maybe this is why I’m not at 5 million subs
That twist mechanism is probably a Japanese patent so Rring is paying a license fee for the technology.
Maybe. My guess was the the gravity mechanism was expensive or just prone to breaking, but I have no idea on the true answer!
50 dollars for a pen 😭
Worst mechanical pencil I have ever owned. Twist mechanism jams, because spring in mechanical pencil doesn't stay in place.
The correct pronunciation is "rot-ring", not "ro-tring" 😅
:D
I can't believe that it took 15 min. to talk about a pen
Too quick? I’ll do a true deep dive next time!
