This brought back so many warm memories. I watched this show whenever I visited my grand folk's farm back in the 60s. It never came on in my area. So us kids would grab blankets and home made fudge and camp out right in front of the old black and white tv.
The program is riddled with factual errors. The Titanic was not launched into space. It was not known as the S.S. Titanic. It was the R.M.S. (Royal Mail Ship) Titanic. Although the Titanic may have been attempting to reach New York on Tuesday evening rather than Wednesday morning, it was not attempting to set a speed record for transatlantic travel. The Titanic was not traveling to New York directly from Southampton. It stopped at Cherbourg and then at Queenstown before continuing on to New York. Bruce Ismay was not a member of the House of Lords. The Astor character was wrong about British superiority in shipping. The White Star Line was owned by the International Mercantile Marine Trust, which was under the control of the American, J. P. Morgan.
It was Olympic's (Titanic's Sister) transatlantic crossing time that Titanic was trying to beat, according to the deposition given by First Class Passenger Elizabeth Lines. She claimed to have overheard the discussion between Bruce Ismay and Captain Smith in the D-Deck Reception Room on April 13. It wasn't uncommon as the sister ships Lusitania and Mauritania would also challenge each others crossing time.
There is one noticeable blooper: At the beginning of the show Cronkite states “…with its launching, man has taken another step forward in his conquest of space.” "Space"? Perhaps the word “launching” threw him off.
Walter alluded to Titanic being the fastest liner (erroneous), and the video gives Murdoch as 'chief mate': actually the chief officer was Wilde, Murdoch was the 1st officer.
IMDb says Hayden Rorke did four episodes of You Are There. Titanic, Pearl Harbor and two others. His Filmography implies that he was never lacking employment. I thought I saw him in some SciFi movies but I'm not seeing any listed.

This is a recreation made for a tv series, “you are there” that was popular in the 50s on CBS. They re-enacted historical events to make it look like a news report, when really everything is scripted. There were no reporters on board the real titanic, video footage would be impossible to film in the real lighting with that technology, and TV didn’t exist in 1912.
@@williamanthony9090 I can’t hear your tone through the screen so it makes it harder for me to understand if you’re being sarcastic. There are other people here who think this is real too, so it only made sense at the time.
Captain wanted camera time, so he shoved a lady passenger away...lmao ..... this is so funny because of all the inaccuracies..... & the reporter calls the captain "Captain Kirk" is hillarious...... shows how little research mainstream media did back in the 60s
Because most of the passengers that could have used them didn't think the ship would sink, and a large number of third class passengers were locked below decks and had to fight their way to the boats, which were mostly gone by that time.

I watched this the first time around. I was born in 1946😊
It may not be the most historically accurate but i still enjoyed it

The Captain's eyes are priceless!
Yeah especially while Ismay does his show.
Hayden Rorke (Dr. Bellows from "I Dream of Jeannie") plays passenger Frederick Hoyt (who survived).
Many thanks for this.

Why don't they show Ismay saving himself?

But for its day, they all did a fantastic condensed, dramatization using all the facts known then.

Hard to say. All I know it is from CBS that aired from 1953 to 1957.
