Flash lookin M&T joint you made there Scott...the carpentry side and joinery sides of the trades certainly do lend to each other. One is a true trade, the other a true craft and art form. P6 is the way...Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance...can be applied to so many facets of life!!!!!

Nice dude. I know hand cut joinery is a bit of sideline thing for you but I can't tell you how much of a difference it made to me building a proper solid work bench with a vice. Using hand tools becomes a pure joy once you've got that sorted.

Keep up the good work, you, Finish Carpentry TV, and Insider Carpentry are my favorite carpentry TH-camrs. I love how humble you are, and how you share your learning experiences with us.
With the joinery work, I would be inclined to just use power tools made for the purpose. I'm latecomer to carpentry, having come from a telecoms background, and my solution for lack of skill is simply to get a tool to compensate. I decided my hinge installs were too crap using chisels, so I got a trim router and figured out how to use that to get them perfect, and I mean perfect. Maybe I'm lazy, but I think machines produce the most consistent and precise results.

    • @ScottBrownCarpentry

I'm with you on that. I certainly have the same approach on the job. In this case I look at it like I am practicing my golf swing lol. But when it comes to making some furniture I think I'll do it the most efficient way.

Don't know if I spelt correctly but sure you can find them on here easily enough. Sometimes even just things I have forgotten comes to light when they show you alternative ways to do a cut or joint etc. Congratulations on the play button ( girlfriend one looks better) you need to put those skills to build a over the top frame/ plaque for hers. Mortise and tenon how ever complex it´s like a sport or art or mastery of anything, repeat, repeat, repeat and after them 10k hours put into mastering the craft you can to it really great.
I feel like the modern market systems have robbed us of that, there is rarely any people in the crafts that have managed to do something for that long now that they could call themselves the real master.

    Hey man,
When I done my apprenticeship in Scotland you are trained in college as a carpenter & a joiner, regardless of wether you do site or bench work, the first block release we had in college we done a variety of basic wood joints, corner half laps, half laps, dove tail half laps and mortise & tenon joints. They do this to test your basic skills with hand tools and attention to detail.
Did you have to do these in training?
I’ve never had to make another mortice and tenon joint on site, but I used to thoroughly enjoy the bench work in college. Can’t say I’d like to do it full time though.
    Cheers
