Going to college to socialize is very much a business major mindset. Not saying it's not important for a lot of people, but engineers or math/science majors are mostly just trying to keep their heads down and get through whatever difficult ass topic they're doing at the moment
Even for mental health or the medical field your focus is getting an understanding of the material, and then your internships. With these degrees you are super in-demand. Just develop the best fundamentals you can. Then show you have some experience.
@haruhirogrimgar6047 there's always going to be some degree of networking that can help you get a leg-up, but it seems like most people assume "networking" means getting drunk with a rich kid so you can get a summer job with his dad, which works really well for all these MBA kids running around. But for a lot of people "networking" means you volunteered to do some research as an undergrad so you can prove you have Matlab experience, which isn't really what people imagine when they think "yeah bro, go to college and network and party"
It's funny that they said college is just for networking when most people have to juggle a job, their studies, and sometimes being a parent as well. There's no time for networking with that much on your plate.

Obsidian, Bethesda, Blizzard. Microsoft is an umbrella for has-been studios. China-controlled AAA and indie devs are our future.
Unfortunately you may be right. The only Microsoft project i have any faith in at the moment is InXile's "Clockwork Revolution". Primarily because Brian Fargo has experienced firsthand what it's like to bow down to the "investors" previously when the entirety of Interplay was eaten away and destroyed before his very eyes. if his studio also falls into the modern gaming hole then all is truly lost for all western game studios and everything east of Poland will become the new gaming hegemons.
@ At least there’s a spark of hope. In 5-10 years, it’ll be either be gacha shovelware from Chinese puppet devs and indie passion projects which take up 95% of the market, then the rare European RPG every 1-3 years that is the best RPG until the next one comes out. A hellscape, to be sure.

I don't get where this mindset of "how did you not know college was about networking" comes from. If a bunch of people that went to college went there because they believed it would get them a job, I'm interested in knowing how they came to that belief. If the colleges themselves are advertising that you can get a job if you get a degree, and their parents are telling them that, and news media is telling them that, I find it hard to blame the people going to college for believing that. I basically think a lot of people were lied to about the benefits of going to college, and so I think it's counterproductive to shit on them. Now, even if you do think people were lied to, that doesn't mean you have to support national student loan forgiveness.
It is also still such a weird take. College grads on average are WAY more successful than people without a degree. They earn a million dollars more over their lifespan on average. They are way more likely to find a full-time job (rather than juggle multiple part time). And they are more likely to get a job that offers benefits. Like, the idea there is this HUGE number of people with college degrees stuck at a Starbucks making minimum wage just isn't a thing.
@@haruhirogrimgar6047probably because the amount of people on Twitter and tiktok crying about how they can't find a job after college are astroturfing the false narrative that college is a waste of time
@@haruhirogrimgar6047 Well those might be one of those statistics colleges use to convince people to go to college. I'm kind of anti-college so I wanna point out that even if college grads have improved life outcomes, that doesn't demonstrate a causal link. For example: smart people were smart even before they went to college. And even if it is causal, it can still be worth trying to identify the people that college _doesn't_ work for, and try to minimize the harm to those individuals. Or point out that there may be better options. And then it's also worth considering the long term trends. e.g., if everyone has a college degree, suddenly the college degree doesn't mean that much anymore. So whatever produced those college grad success statistics may no longer be the case.
