  • Step into the cowboy boots of a pioneer building a homestead in the old west. Maybe I’ve watched too many westerns like 1883 but its reinvigorated my childhood love of pioneers, cowboys, and covered wagons. Combine that with my interest in bushcraft, building survival shelters, cowboy camping and boom this channel is born. I hope to honor our forefathers and better understand their lives and struggles through living history and a bit of experimental archeology. Please like and subscribe to follow along in the adventures.
    In this episode I begin building the frame to my cabin using cedar. Cedar was often used by pioneers for cabins because the wood is naturally bug and rot resistant. The downside is that it's incredibly flammable. The brush from tree limbs I put on the fire is from a cedar tree and you can see it burns hot and fast.
    Thank you for watching and if you enjoy the video please remember to give it a thumbs up!

    I often tell my self I have an old soul and was born in to the wrong period of time and you sir are as well and I am fascinated by the way life was back then. I was born in 1993 and was raised by an older wise man and in school I had only couple close friends but we where the same way up brought with older manners and carried our self a certain way ages ahead of our generation at 15 years of age I had more friends that where 40-60 years of age if you’d put me and my closest friend in a crowd of our generations we would stick out like a pair of wise old men and I could tell that my crowd was clueless and with out direct. • @WesternPioneer
      @WesternPioneer  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! This year I want to build an ice house so that during the winter I can store up ice for all year round to keep food from spoiling. Right now I'm sorry to say I'm using a modern day cooler for the time being but I've read that during the journey out west pioneers would kill an animal, butcher it, and then put it in their barrel full of drinking water and that would keep it fresher for longer but at the risk of contaminating the water. I should try that. Honestly I don't think I've washed my hands before or after cooking so far, which was a bad call because I did get sick so I'll start doing that. My camera batteries last 8-10 hours a piece and I typically only film 4 hours worth of footage so I haven't had to worry about charging them.

    Hello, I just found your channel, I'm from New Zealand. it's so fascinating to see all the tools and equipment that I usually see in museums actually being used in real life. especially that wagon! just out of curiosity, why aren't you stripping the logs of their bark or burning the ends before you put them in the ground so that they don't rot? did they not do that for that kind of shelter? is this just a temporary shelter until you build a proper cabin?

    • @WesternPioneer
      @WesternPioneer  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much! Yeah the wagon is from 1870-1910 and I absolutely love it. To answer your question cedar trees don't rot the same way most trees do and they're often used as fence posts because of that. Looking back though I should have stripped them anyway but I think once the walls are up the walls will take the majority of the weight of the roof. Although if I'm wrong and the whole thing comes crashing down in a year it should make for a great video lol

    What's the reason for not backfilling the post-holes with dirt after the uprights are in? Seems like you ended up using log offcuts in the meantime, but I'm not sure why.

    • @WesternPioneer
      @WesternPioneer  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Eventually I filled them in properly but I believe at the time of filming this I was still playing with the hight of the "Y" notches and trying to figure out how tall I want my roof to be.

      I've bought a lot from riverjunction .com But the wool vest and coat are from sutleroffortscott .com and I would say those are very high quality pieces, they specialize in Civil War clothing so I just changed out the buttons to make them look more civilian looking. The hat was used from ebay.

      Yeah the wagon is basically a magicians hat and I keep pulling stuff out that wouldn't have fit before so it's not realistic in that sense. The problem is I keep finding more and more cool old stuff at antique stores that I want to buy and put in the videos.

    It would be more believable if you were using beef tallow or some other type of animal fat to cook with. Otherwise how are you trading with and what are your trading? You eating that beef jerky is more believable. You could open a barrel of salt pork or other meat that would be available out there at that time.
