I don't use a clicker anymore because it's inconvenient to carry around, especially since I use a wheelchair and holding a leash plus treating is a lot on its own, so I mark with yes

I actually struggle more teaching the stationary behaviors then the moving ones, so this is an awesome way to look at it 🥰

My vote is that you shaped This to do the button WITH a clicker. :) Thanks for the explanation of how and when you choose your reinforcements, especially "moments in time" and "actions". Appreciate you spending so much time doing it. I do remember listening to one of your podcasts where you explained about using a clicker with dolphins at the apex of their jumps. That was a super example. Watching for the exact moment...must remember!!!

Thank you for this video. I especially liked when the dolphin trainers used the word “Good” instead of “Yes.” My question: I’ve used “Yes” for over a year, but I want to change to “Good” because it’s faster and easier. How do I accomplish this without confusing my dog?

Found this by coincidence today, but it was a question I was going to search up. I am totally dysfunctional with most types of multi-tasking. While following the perch training could see the benefits of a clicker but know I would never be able to watch, click, reward etc. without completely detailing the session. Thankfully Bronco, my 9 mo border collie mix- a-mutt is WAY smarter than me and is doing well with the training using YES. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. I might give the clicker a try on a behavior not so necessary on a daily basis now that I understand it.

Watching for the secord time after going through the transcript. Always get something new out of it. Shout out to the production team -- love the overall high quality, the animations, all the items that add humor and interest. My husband loves watching these too. Thanks to all! 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪

A great piece of advice coming from your experience, especially the part about the clicker isolating moments in time instead of behaviours of motion (except for the experienced trainers out there of course). It will help me choose my tools wisely for my upcoming sessions.

I think you are the most amazing trainer. I'm not quite sure how to take a video and make notes for every stage of this tap. In regards to like this one with a clicker. please help! Again. I am so thankful for you! Someday I will say to you. My little girl is so responsive to me. And we have a great bond!

I knew when you first quoted Zig Zigler that this was going to be great! The pace that you are putting these things out is pretty amazing. This was a great one! I would love to hear a podcast or two about putting a behavior on cue. My recall cue is holding up great, but my puppy's enthusiasm for crate games seemed to go down when I put it on a cue, and I'm not sure that I really understand the mechanics of getting an uncued behavior on a cue. Love the teaching! Cheers!

And here I thought I knew how to use a clicker. Thanks for schooling me on that. It all makes so much more sense when used the way you describe. I laughed out loud when you were describing the boarder collie getting in frisk position. That's one of my favorite moments in dog training, when I get to watch my dogs think. The only thing better is when they think really hard and they do what I was hoping for. It's pure joy.

I tried to introduce clicker training into my on lead walk around local lake today, clicking and saying my marker word ‘yes’ when Zulli looked at me, then rewarding as she came to RZ. Gradually I was able to omit the word and just click. I had for a short time used OK but soon changes, as OK was a word frequently used in general conversation. Now for the same reason I would not use Susan’s new word ‘Good’ as I’m always talking to my dog, and calling her a good girl! 😂

Question about reinforcement chucking and permissions. I play IYC as a means to establish permission as a foundational element of our relationship. When I throw food I use the "search" cue to provide permission to eat thrown food. When you utilize food chucking is it an abundance of "search" cues as well, or are there circumstances where the dog can be rewarded with food but not 'granted' permission. I use chucking for calm behavior in xpen primarily right now, but I keep wondering if my dog's persistent choice to eat random items off the ground is the confusion I'm making by allowing him to eat food chucked food. How much food can a trainer chuck if a dog can't eat chucked food? :-)

Great podcast. I recently went from using a verbal marker to a clicker for training and I'm getting much better results (I always knew I was the issue NOT my dog🤦‍♀). But, could you help me understand why using a target stick isn't luring? Or is it just that you choose not to FOOD lure?

What should I use when my two reactive dogs pass each other with no reaction? From one of them? From the other? From neither? Should I only reward the one that us stationary or both? (Luna walks past Sophie. Sophie will either ignore, slight snarl, or bark. I'd like to reward Sophie when she doesn't react at all. We are working on redirecting Sophie's focus when Luna is near.)

I was taught years ago that the very first thing to do, before teaching any behaviours with a clicker, was to condition the dog that a click means "reward:. So ... simply click/reward, click/reward, click/reward. Is this correct? Or can I just go straight to training a simple behaviour as Susan does in the video (after practising isolating without the dog, of course!)

I have trained one of our puppies to sit in a crooked way. It was very persistent behaviour.
Now I think I wasn't ready for a clicker yet back then.

  • @pricejames500

I would say you don't use a clicker for your puppy to hit the button. I'm saying this because there is a noise when the puppy hits the like button. 😊

Dear Susan, I've watched most of your videos on training methodology and I could not find any information on the "keep going" signal. Do you have one? When do you use it? How do you use it? When do you think it is useful and when is it not useful? I have searched the Internet and found some material but they are not really practical. For example if I want to build duration, should I use the KGS or not, because the dog might get used to it and be dependent on it? Shall I rather shape it without? If it is a very complex task (like a canine freestyle routine of several minutes without any reinforcement) would you use a KGS? And also I was wondering what a "click" for your really means in dog training. For example when you train a dog duration of sit pretty you never use clicker? Because my problem is that the click sound means you've done well, task is finished. So the dog will probably move out of position. I would love an episode about how you do this. Thank you!

Yes, I'd probably use the clicker for the button. If that didn't step her to the goal, then I'd try something else. 🤔
    Thanks again!

Thank you for another great episode Susan! ❤️ Your podcasts is what I look forward to every week!
Do your daily walks have a certain structure or goal? How do you go about transitioning to off leash walks once your dog’s recall is reliable?
Also in your first episode you mentioned that you might interview other trainers or something like that. I don’t know if you have changed your podcast plans since then, but one guy I think would be really cool to interview is the Joseph Carter the Mink Man. 😉 m.th-cam.com/users/josephdcarter
I only know him from TH-cam but he is super cool, training his dogs, breeding and training mink, and even a lizard for natural pest control in his area. Positive reinforcement all the way as far as I can tell.
