Talking to strangers… sometimes you can find out the most interesting things. I asked a man about his POW license plate. He said he had been a POW in WW II. I asked if he minded talking about his experience. He said not at all. We sat down and he talked about how he was captured what the prison was like. The funny and heartbreaking things that happened. I value that random conversation and will forever. You never know who it is that’s beside you.

In my experience most Americans are genuine when we smile and make small talk in public. I'm an introvert, so I'm not as smiling or chatty with strangers, but once I know someone or recognize them as a regular employee at my local store, I will smile and ask how they are and I mean it. My mom is an extrovert and never met a stranger-- if she's standing in a store looking for something and another person comes down the aisle she's going to talk to them and bring up something random-- and it's usually positive conversation to make the other person smile not controversial/political or anything bad. If we don't have time to talk we will say "sorry" or "excuse me" as we pass someone-- it's a form of politeness to at least acknowledge the other person is there and that you are invading their personal space or blocking their view of the shelves as you go by. I'm always shocked in other countries when people get very close to you and don't say a word to you as if you don't exist. I'm constantly checking to make sure I haven't been pick pocketed when I travel outside the US because of that. Even in big cities in the US people make eye contact and give a little smile or nod of the head to say silently, "hey I see you, we all good" kind of thing-- here if someone doesn't acknowledge you like that you start looking around and thinking they may be getting ready to rob you... or you think there's something wrong with them like they are on drugs or mentally ill and checked out of reality. This may not apply if you're in big crowds or a busy subway, of course, but I'm talking about walking down a street or in a store with only 1 or 2 other people present. Don't be confused if someone talks openly with you in public-- we are genuinely friendly here!

4:27 I can already disagree with her. I don’t have to think about smiling or saying I’m sorry when I cut somebody off or walk in front of them at the grocery store. It just comes out because it’s genuine, not because it’s fake.

A cold is a generic name for a viral infection of unknown origin which causes inflammation. Treating with hot or cold is only to alleviate the symptoms not the actual cause. The body will fight the infection, hot treatment will result in no benefit other than to alleviate the symptoms, it may actually make it worse as to promote secondary bacterial infection and possibly spread the infection. cold treatment reduces inflammation and alleviates symptoms quickly.

Time off from work varies with time worked at a company. After you've been with a company for 10-15 or 20 years your time off for vacation could easily be 6+ weeks. Many companies now roll in sick time and vacation time and just call it PTO (Personal Time Off). Your first year at a company usually gives you 2 weeks of PTO. Then after a few years it goes up and gradually over time you get more. As for Holidays, we usually have about 10 paid holidays per year.

If possible I would keep a few vacation days available in case I might need them if I ran out of sick days or needed time off to go to a doctor's appointment that was going to be on the longer side (and, therefore, not able to make up the time). Most places you don't get much sick time or vacation time so you have to use them sparingly. Sometimes if you were sick and had used up the small handful of sick days the employer might let you use vacation time to call out sick. It really cuts into what you have left for actual vacation.

I worked in healthcare for over 12 years in the mid-nineties research discovered that the level of brain damage in people who were kept warm to 'break' the fever. Warming up escalate the fever until it breaks often causes irreversible brain damage. It's been shown that keeping the person cool and trying to keep the temp from spiking is much better for a person. It was common practice when someone has a fever in the hospital, we take their blanket and only give them a sheet and turn down the thermostat. It actually works alot better

I don't understand why some Europeans put Americans down by saying we're rude and self-absorbed, but then say in their country, people don't exchange smiles or greetings, they don't hold doors for the next person, and more. I've also seen videos of people from Korea and those who escaped North Korea say they were shocked by how friendly people in the states are.
People here are genuinely polite, and genuinely impolite, so if someone is being polite, please don't think it's fake. If you're in a southern state and someone calls you "sweetheart", "sugar", "hon" (short for honey) "darlin'", "precious"..... those are terms of endearment and people are seeing you as part of their family. I've lived in Alabama all my life and I hear these from strangers all the time.
I called for a doctor's appointment today and the receptionist said "Okay, darlin', we have an opening next Wednesday at 2:45pm". We set it up, and she said "Alright, hon, well see you then".
About a week ago, an older man was holding a door open for me as I was about to enter a store.I sped up so he didn't have to wait longer, and he said "I'm in no rush, sweetheart... don't run on account of me." I'm always quick to reply to elders with a "Yes/no Ma'am, or Sir", too, and it's as natural as smiling and saying "How are you".
Also, I've had strangers to actually tell me how they are, like when in line at the store, the person next to me or the cashier might say they're tired or hungry, but that things could be worse. I'll say they're right about things being worse and that I hope they'll get to rest when they get home. A lot of times I'll get a big smile and a "thank you", because sometimes people just need a moment to hear something positive, even from a stranger.
Both of these people were white and I'm a black woman, so though in the south, black and white and other races get along great, depending on attitude. Like I said earlier, people won't fake being nice or rude, and I know this because I've had white people just flat out be rude to me and other people of color, and I've seen black people be flat out rude to people who aren't black. I've come across rude Asian store owners, I've come across some who treat me like family, and the same with people of other ethnicities, and I have friends and relatives from different countries and ethnicities, so my country and my family are melting pots, and I love it. 🙂
Again, it depends on the individual, not the country as a whole.
When people have their tonsils out, ice cream and popsicles are eaten to soothe the throat, and just like with a sore throat from a cold or flu, the cold from these foods are supposed to keep down inflammation. If you have a sprained ankle, are you likely to be told to put ice or heat on it for the inflammation? I've always been told to use ice. Some injuries may have heat and cold alternated. Many cough drops have a cooling sensation, too.
Warm salt water as a gargle can help a sore throat as the melted salt also helps with inflammation and killing germs. Warm drinks can also soothe.

The taste and quality of fast food depends on location. Some places can be hit or miss. It really depends on the management. Well run, fast food chains like Chick-Fil-A and In-N-Out focus on having consistently good quality and providing good customer service, so it's very rare that you'd have a negative experience there. I highly doubt the standards for quality and food preparation are higher in Russia than in America..

    • @magus169
      @magus169 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Well, that's just a fact. Fast food in Russia, including McDonald's, in the times Maria spoke about, was better than in the USA. I personally heard this in Moscow from foreign tourists.
As for the quality of services, many of them were built from scratch 20-30 years ago and therefore took into account the mistakes that others had previously made. And today Moscow and other large cities are indeed very comfortable. This can even be seen in the Russians who left Russia because of the war, they lack the convenience and comfort to which they are accustomed.

    Millie is right, again:
Drinking/slurping/eating something cold numbs the lining of the throat, reducing the irritation of a sore throat.
But James is also right about drinking hot things in hot weather to feel cooler, which I don’t believe but so many people do. All over steamy South America, people eat hot soup from THERMOSES for lunch.
When I first saw it, and saw it again in several South American countries, I always thought it was crazy!

The amount of vacation and sick time you acrue over here depends on the company. Most companies give their employees 2 weeks of vacation after the first year of employment while giving them 8 days of sick that they can use immediately. My friend got hired by an engineering firm where the amount of weeks of vacation you received was based on your age. They also received 12 days of sick and 12 days of holiday pay. For an American company it was pretty generous. I would like to say that everyone you will run into will be friendly and talkative, but the reality is everyone is different and they come from different backgrounds/cultures, so your experience may vary. For my sisters, parents and I, if we ran into someone with an accent, we had to introduce ourselves and strike up a conversation. This is one thing I loved about growing near Disneyland, the world would come to visit. It was our chance to meet people from another part of the world, and travel in a sense. You may be coming to learn more about the US, but we are just as excited in learning more about you.

11:18 I’m a CPA and I see 99.9% of my clients once a year, during tax season. I know SO much about their lives, their kids, their grandkids, their new pets, etc. I couldn’t imagine just sitting there with them in front of me and not talking about their lives. It’s not because I’m fake or act like I care, like she said, it’s because I genuinely care and and it’s my human nature to engage and relate to people.

If you're from a country other than the U.S. and you've lived in Los Angeles and New York City, that's all you can claim; you haven't lived in the United States proper. There's a lot in between those cities and the insincere nature of those cities is often gone in cities and towns east and west of LA and NYC respectively.
Re colds or the flu where one has chills: hot tea wins over popsicles. But if you just have a sore throat, cool drinks or something like ice cream or popsicles is soothing.
Re fast food: I've lived in the U.S. all my life and every time I try fast food, regardless of the restaurant chain, I feel let down. It might be "less dreadful" than fast food in other countries, but that's not a ringing endorsement. I try it less and less every year. But regular restaurants are really quite good. The can be expensive, but they are tasty!
Re paid time off (vacation, sick time, etc.), that depends on the employer and State laws. Having several weeks of personal time off is normal for many people.

I don't know if they still do this in hospitals, but it used to be that when someone got their tonsels out; the staff would give things like ice cream to eat because they said it was intended to soothe and reduce any inflamation from the surgery...Actually for me; when it comes to the differences between colds, sinus problems, and sore throats... I do both hot and cold... HOT steam is best for sinuses and colds to keep the sinuses moist and to loosen stuffiness... but for sore throats I do lukewarm for gargling and cold drinks and foods, (i.e. popsicles and cold drinks), for sore throats...When it comes to vacation time; it actually depends on the job and companies themselves as to how much you get; some companies give you more time the longer you work for them... Also SOME companies honor more holidays actually giving the people official days off even if they are religious.... like Good Friday...Actually what she meant is that if you have to take more time off than the holidays you had saved up; but you DO still have sick days then it WILL come out of your sick days... That is difficult to do in some companies because all your days for whatever reason; could be pooled together...
When it comes to handicapped facilities... AMERICANS tend to think that there are NOT enough, NOR are they enforced... If you were to actually look at handicapped parking spaces... the spaces in between that are marked with diagonal lines are NOT parking spaces themselves, but if parking is a bit crowded; then people who are NOT handicapped will park on those lined spaces and will NOT care that this is for people who have mobilitiy issues; to have more space to comfortably get out of their cars... Personally when it comes to times in the year when you KNOW it is going to be crowded; I drag my husband along so he can drive around and find a space while I'm in the store, and I just text him when I am done and back outside...
LOL, sorry one more and that's it; I promise... LOL.. There is also a MAJOR difference between writing an address on paper in the US verses in a European country... In Poland they don't always understand that written, FULL American addresses NEED you to write the name of the state you live in... they don't understand that in the US; in those 50 states; you have a total of over 19,000 cities alone. This does not include towns and villages, nor does it include US TERRITORIES like Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands... AND many of those city names are used in multiple states...Two examples would be the name of Canton and the name of Salem... Canton is a city in 21 states, and Salem is a city in 38 states in the US; so you absolutely NEED to say the name of the state for example if you are sending an official letter... ALSO when writing the street address; this is the US way; 24 Park Place Apt. (or #); B25E, Hartford, CT. 06106, USA...This is Poland; ul. Księdza Jerzego Popiełuszki 28m/27, 20-400 Lublin, Poland. Also notice that in the US; the zip code, (postal code), comes AFTER the city and state but BEFORE the country... In Poland the zip code comes BEFORE BOTH the city and country... Oh and the apartment number in a Polish address is part of the fraction you see... 28m being the building number and the 27 being the actual apartment number... Confusing isn't it?!?!? 😁

If coming down with a cold, I have done warm and cold depending on how I feel. The main thing for me is to keep it clear. Water, popsicle, lemonade, tea, OJ, apple juice etc. I steer clear of milk products, cheese, creamer etc. I was told that milk coats your throat and bacteria can grow more. Maybe that's not true but my Dr is saying only clear item. Coffee is ok if no cream etc.

From the U.S., I speculate that the differences in sick and vacation time is due to the fact that our central (federal) government (Washington DC) does not regulate everything down to the state and local level. That may be negative or positive. There is no federal law requiring every private employer (or even many of the state or local governments) to give paid or unpaid holidays or vacations) I work in retail, where in the same building, we have office staff who work 9a-5p Mon-Friday, with all major holidays paid and off. While on the sales floor, we have staff who work differring shifts each day and week, some with their 'weekends' being two non consecutive days off, and working all holidays (albeit with double hourly pay). I can't imagine telling an American worker they have a month of sick time...I'm not saying it isn't a good thing, but we all know not all 'sick' days are 'sick'. I'm from a different generation, where you went to work unless you were almost dead, and they sent you home. If they sent me home, I didn't feel guilty, when I called out sick, I did. Not the best system, I agree..but what I know.

Going to the store wearing pajamas: most folks here in the states think down on this, that it's trashy (and mostly confined to people under 30, especially women), but it's considered rude to tell a person if you have a negative opinion of what they're wearing. It's also a bit regional - in the South, women care a lot more about how their looks are perceived, so I've seen many more pajama-and-slipper wearers in the Northeast than in my adopted home of Atlanta.

5:29 she's totally describing "Minnesota Nice" - I smile at pretty much everyone I pass & the niceties usually come out of my mouth automatically too. I even told people that they couldn't see it, but I was smiling at them under my mask. It's just a normal part of daily life in Northeastern Minnesota!
6:23 popsicles soothe a sore throat with the cold. Similar results from hard candy, lollypops, etc. You are basically lubricating the sore throat.
A sinus cold & a sore throat are slightly different ailments as far as what will soothe symptoms. Sinus pressure gets relief from steamy foods like soup, tea, etc or a hot shower. Sore throat can be soothed with hot soup, tea or cold popsicles - sometimes hot bothers the sore throat & cold helps more. It's probably more personal preference than scientific. Most kids in the US get chicken noodle soup & Sprite/7up or ginger ale when they are sick - they magically fix any childhood ailments 😉
10:03 again, talking to random strangers is a Minnesota thing too. 😂 Depending on what store you are in, you've probably been trained to interact with customers as you work.
12:23 we just need to make the roads so they hold up to winter here in Northeastern Minnesota!
12:54 Culver's is much better than McDonald's! Fast food isn't really the best quality of food compared to other types restaurants in the US.
15:28 she's lucky to have a week (or any) sick days in the US! Corporate revenue is much more important than employee vacation or sick time. I worked for a large Airline & we literally couldn't be even a few minutes late more than 3 times a year or we could be fired. We had to work on holidays as well - even with a union - as only people with high seniority got the day off since there were a certain number of excused slots & holidays are big travel days. There was nothing to help if your kids were sick. There was no paid employee sick time & you usually had to trade shifts with someone if you had an appointment. We got 2 weeks of vacation, but it was given out on seniority basis, so you usually couldn't pick weeks together. Thankfully, the US government enacted a program called Family Medical Leave that if you or a close relative was sick, you could take up to 90 days off (in a rolling year) unpaid without being penalized from your employer - but you had to fill out paperwork & call in every time you needed to be off. You have to work for a company for a year or so before you qualify for it.
My dad was a teacher & in 20+ years, he never took a sick day - until he fell off the roof one winter & was in the hospital. He rarely used a sick day after that either. He owned a home business - so he worked his full time job & his home job every day (except Sunday - usually).

  • @yugioht42
    @yugioht42 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Standard is six days a week with one day off. Companies usually offer 2 weeks of vacation time per year but you can add onto that each year you work. A typical 40 hour work week minus the mandatory weather day which no company holds against people. Holidays most companies close and usually the week leading to new years that is free to workers as the company gears up for another year. But the amount of hours you work is federally regulated so not to burn people out. You have a certain amount of overtime, you can’t work beyond certain hours, and it’s just a big list of things companies can’t do. It’s to protect workers rights and make sure people can work safely.

The thing she was saying about talking to the cashier holding up the line - It's not like the cashier is just standing there talking to you. While the cashier talks to you they are scanning items or on the computer or whatnot - they are multitasking not just talking - so it doesn't really affect the wait time. Not sure what's going on where she shops.
I wonder if she even ever gave something cold on a sore throat a try. It soothes the inflammation/swelling. It kind of sounded like she just thought it was nonsense and never actually tried it.

Russia doesn’t have Macdonald’s anymore. The company pulled out as soon as the Ukrainian war broke out. The only location was near red square in Moscow that I knew. It was actually odd as a big symbol of the American way of life was right in the heart of a communist country aka the Soviet union. Anthony Bourdain only visited Russia himself because he had Vladimir who is another big name in Europe showing him around which their government liked. Andrew Zimmern visited Russia via a business visa for two weeks staying in St. Petersburg and Moscow. It’s extremely difficult to get any type of visa to Russian held territories.
