I heard part of an episode and the production sounds a lot like the old Don and Mike days. Don did a TON of time and weather checks though. Now that so much time has passed, I wondering Don and Mike would consider a reuion, even if just for one show. Would they even still have that same chemistry?
It’s so sad how they all would end up so strained and distant from each other personally today…right now, on the show it’s all about the end and friends forever, but now…so odd.
It's a shame that there has been a falling out among the members of the show. It happens with age, though. In this case, I totally understand Don needing to leave the show behind when he did. Personally, I'm surprised he stayed on for the 3 years he did. The fact that Don never had them relabel the Frieda sound effect is telling how much he really missed her and how ingrained she was into the show. I believe that if Frieda had not passed away, he and Mike may still be doing the full show to do this day. Don and Mike may not have been best friends, but they were a strong radio team.
I altered my work schedule to allow listening to The Don and Mike Show! Don, Mike, Buzz, and Mike were absolutely superior to Howard Stern. RIP Frieda who was an amazing part of the show as well. I will also hold the show deep in my heart.
Obviously D&M burned out on working together. They were never really off radio friends. It was better in the later years once the got out of their Zoo antics. CBS dumped the format to all sports.Mike has gone on to be the lead on his podcast & be more of the personality. Give it a listen as it’s similar but with Robb and Oscar from Big O and M which was on 106.7 too. Don as expected has jumped around gig to gig the last 17 years. What ever became of Don’s kid?
Honestly, Mike's show is...kind of meh. You can really feel that Don was the driving force of the original show. Mike is great when he's not the guy in charge of the direction of a show. It just feels...not great. In contrast, the few things I've heard of Don, even when it's not the same format, feel way more like the original show.
@RabidDogma Don was basically the producer of the show. He was the one that outlined the show and directed the pace. Mike was always the color commentator. Great duo, but not great apart. During the time I listened, The Don and Mike show was very much The Don show with Mike. I wonder where they would be today if Frieda had not passed away when she did. Would they still be doing the show on radio? Would JFK had flipped formats? Would there be a Don and Mike podcast network where the Don and Mike Show, but other members of the show got to do their side shows as well? Who knows? Either way, I respect that Don needed to leave the show and am surprised he was able to stay for the 3 years he stayed. Hearing the story about the Frieda button being next to him during those years really got to me.
Don and Mike got me through so many tough times with their humor.
They were absolute magic.
