Haha Didn't know that. I haven't thought about Rich Hall in I don't know how long. I think I remember seeing that he moved to England and has had quite a successful career over there.@@brianwolters7560
Because it was such an obscure reference, even then? I looked for information about the show, and found that it went off the air in 1993, over 30 years ago. It was New York based and local. This skit was performed in 1985.
The parody was so good, it wasn't that much different from an actual episode of the real Joe Franklin Show. (RIP Joe.) EDIT: And Alan Arkin and Doug Henning.
I would have thought the same thing but by 1979, WOR where Joe Franklin was produced and aired was going out to the *whole* country via cable. I am shocked to learn this from another comment here.
I just noticed: the cameras in 8H were periodically upgraded over the years and there are seasons where the lagging video production quality is extra obvious because things the following seasons become amazingly sharper.
Martin Short was on a plane flight I was on, several years ago. I talked to him when we got off the plane, and told him Doug had been a personal friend of mine. I said I enjoyed Martin's impersonation of Doug, but that Doug was truly a sincere, inspired, loving person. "I love Doug Henning!" was Martin's reply. When I continued to praise Doug, Martin again emphasized "I love Doug Henning". Martin had an appealing air of blissfulness about him, not unlike that of Doug Henning.
If you watched the show regularly, you came to respect Joe. He's easy to ridicule, but, nonetheless, a good man and worthy of respect. There was no one in show biz who disliked him. Almost everyone agreed to be on his show...Bing Crosby, Fay Wray, Andy Devine and hundreds, no thousands, who never had a better gig than Joe's show. In the same league as Skip E. Lowe. Funny, flawed, but well regarded by his guests.
Joe Franklin was a cornball but he was a decent guy who always tried to promote his guests. He always had grade A guests along with some ridiculous unknowns.
i'm laughing so much, tears running down my face. This was so hilarious, 40 years ago, and just as hilarious today.
Martin Short as Doug Henning always cracked me up
Magic is illusion! And illusions are magical!
@@danielboom72 Haha Exactly!!!
It was interesting that in the same season, Doug Henning was also played by Rich Hall.

I loved Joe Franklin late at night as a little kid in the 80s
Amazing that the majority of the country hadn’t a clue who Crystal parodied
Hysterical
I had no idea this was based on a real show. I'm from the midwest and found out years later.

Is Daphne Clayton a actual celebrity I could only find this skit when I googled her name
Channel 9
I remember Joe Franklin! Every time I hear that music! 😅😅😅
may you RIP Joe Fanklyn i love you man
anton the indie producer.
This was the best season of SNL. Martin Short, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest!
I loved the SNL episode when George Carlin was a guest on “The Joe Franklin Show” as a fireman.
That was absolutely the best Joe Franklin skit.
THAT is epic!!
Joe was a nostalgia guy that Billy nailed lol Guest gets Alan's facial expressions
Apparently, Franklin wasn't so pleased with the impression.
NObody outside of NYC of this period would have ANY idea what the hell this is.

@@badger500 Didn't realize that. Thanks
In 85 had no idea what this was but immediately loved it - when I pulled up the actual Joe Franklin show I couldn’t believe how accurate this was
I walked in to my office kitchen an saw a box of Streit’s matzos so I had to come here.
I just noticed: the cameras in 8H were periodically upgraded over the years and there are seasons where the lagging video production quality is extra obvious because things the following seasons become amazingly sharper.
De gustibus and all that, but - one of the funniest skits ever!🕊
Martin Short as Doug Henning.
It is! You are right!

I think this episode of SNL had Rich Hall also impersonating Doug Henning during the news.
Martin Short!
Streits Matzoh - for the unleavened experience of a lifetime…
Gilbert and Frank brought me here.
Listening to Drew Friedman talk about Joe suing him on the podcast was great.
If you watched the show regularly, you came to respect Joe.

He was a NY City broadcasting legend since the earliest days of radio.
But SO MANY of the guests were pure cringe.
Over 300,000 according to the interview he gave on Space Ghost Coast to Coast.
That's basically why I'm here now 😆
I believe this sketch was written with admiration of the actual show - can’t remember what the source was but it may have been on Conans podcast
I liked the episode of this with Jackie Rogers Jr.
WOR suddenly turned up on my cable in California in late 70s..
And I watched Franklin show in disbelief..WTF is this? Mode.
Wow, I grew up in NJ where WOR is based and never imagined it was going out to the rest of the country! (let alone way back in the late 70s)
Hilarious. Dead on Alan Arkin.
his wig is coming off in the back too 😂
Is it that Kathleen Turner?
Yes. Wasn't she in every movie ever made in the 80s?
Thank you ~ I was wondering who that was!
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
How do you feel about Ben Turpin? Classic
In another episode he asked "What do you think of Eddie Cantor?" 😊
So funny!
Those who are familiar with the Joe Franklin Show know this sketch... is really that much of an exaggeration of the show.
Joe Franklin was a cornball but he was a decent guy who always tried to promote his guests. He always had grade A guests along with some ridiculous unknowns.
Took me a few to realize that's Kathleen Turner
Uncle Floyd did Joe better...
Office too clean and organized!
Fn classic lol
The bit in the song about "It's nineteen eighty threeeee.....!" only contributed to the low-budget ridiculousness since it was 1984.
Bye Bye Hair
SNL rip off Uncle Floyd with this skit even back in the 80's Lone Michaels was a no talent.
Unfortunately Uncle Floyd ripped off Joe Franklin! Don't get me wrong I loved it!😊😊😊
