Very sad that Kagan died so young. He had so much more to offer.

+CookingJames1 it made me laugh too :) The feeling I get is that they were having an argument at that time. If you watch the other video I uploaded from this recital (Shostakovich sonata), you'll see there seems to be some friction between them after the first movement, and at the end when Richter strangely offers his hand, as if by way of conciliation. They were good friends though.

because it's fucking Vivace even if non troppo and everyone else plays it like it's Adagio. it makes no sense

This is likely a more accurate tempo than the usual too ponderous speeds. In the first movement playing vivace non troppo keeps the middle section sostenuto from dragging. The second movement is played with the grace of an orchestral Brahms adagio and the piu andante can come alive so the return of the A-flat chorale is a little profound. The third, marked confusingly enough as allegro molto moderato, has to scurry along to enliven the tranquillo section.
This is a recording of the century of a small often overlooked gem. Listen for a bit to the violinist respecting the opening mezzo voce…almost no vibrato and a light slow bow. I believe there is a lot to learn about performing Brahms here.

Perfect tempo! Sounds wonderful, good tempo and "flow" of the music.
      I love it!

I don't know what is "too fast" about it, it's still moderate but at least doesn't fall apart
