I was diagnosed with copd stage 4 over 5 years ago. After my last exacerbation it has gone backwards after a good time of stability…
I supplement myself very well and do cardio and strength fitness twice a week.
I quit smoking 7 years ago. Also have asthma and have had lung cancer.
It isn’t easy, but will have to go on. No oxygen yet. I don’t want it. Walking is very hard, but with my mobile scooter I go out with my pointer and spaniel/husky and have a lot of fun with them. Thats what keeps me going ❤

I'm 69 and I've had COPD for 9 years. I recently had a chest infection and as a result I have taken up weight-lifting again. Yes, weight lifting. At 69. With COPD. I take my dog for 3 long walks every day, don't smoke, have a very healthy diet and do quite a lot of hoovering. All of these things help.

I was diagnosed with copd when I was 38 ,I’m 62 now and because of Covid my lungs took a hit , for the first time in my life I have been on oxygen, but I still fight the good fight, I go to lung rehab and I walk a mile every other day with my oxygen… I am slowly getting better … by the grace of God …

Over 10 years ago my wife was involved in a nearly fatal car accident. As a result she lost 40% of her left lung capacity. She also was diagnosed asthmatic as a child and hospitalized several times growing up. As an adult she used an inhaler daily and also had a "next step" inhaler incase the main one wasn't enough. She has had trouble walking up more than one flight of stairs or walking more than a few minutes. Well, I began Keto to reduce my chronic pain from an autoimmune disease, and after she saw how it improved my health she began Keto to lose weight. Well she did lose 50 lbs in 4 months, but better than that, she is off all her medications and has no need for her inhaler. Since her car accident she has had annual lung function test and every year it was going down. Well this year she had her test and when she saw her respirologist he was amazed and confused that her lung function had IMPROVED by 16%. She is now walking several miles a day with me and is so happy shopping for new clothes.

Dr Berry, this video could be life changing to me…I was diagnosed w stage 3 copd 2.5 years ago. I started PT right away. I quit after a year… I didn’t realize how important this is to my body, until I listened to this. I’ve been home doing nothing, honestly. I am on oxygen when exerting. Staying home doing nothing has made me weak. Walking from bedroom to kitchen makes me breathless. I NEED TO RETURN TO PT, if they’ll have me. By not moving Im making my lungs weaker, like you said, then I do less than nothing. Thank you! I hope I call today to start up the first of the year again. It’s very hard for me to go mentally. I don’t leave the house. I’ve Never smoked and I’m 62. Thank you. I’ll call right now.

It's difficult I hear you. I have COPD stage 4, BUT I CANT HAVE OXYGEN AS IM A CO2 RETAINER. ( carbon dioxide). So imagine you can't breathe AND can't have oxygen. I have been doing exercises in my little pool. Just gentle upper body stretching and walking around the pool. It is working, have energy when I get out, feel motivated. Also taking, D3, GREEN TEA with ground ginger, PURE HONEY and a quarter tspn of died thyme. It's brilliant anti inflammation, so your not struggling for breath. Also, vitamin B1, zinc and 1tspn of peanut butter a day. Look up peanut butter on lung health. Amazing antioxidants, I was so surprised by all the goodness in it. Get the real deal. Just 💯 peanut 🥜. Go for it, I refuse to give up. I'm 59yr. Louise Australia 🇦🇺 😊😊

What about viruses? I starte coughing more than four years ago after contracting a virus. probably not COVID. None of the drugs that my physicians prescribed did anything. Using a whistle like breathing exerciser did help and so did two teaspoons of honey in my two cups of morning tea. I hope that once the weather is better I can stop drinking the honey until the weather gets cold and damp again in the fall.

Yes. Believe you can fight it! I was diagnosed [brutally] at age 24 with huge upper lobe bullae in both lungs with many smaller throughout the lower lobes [not anti-trypsin deficient either] and I turn 55 this year. That's over 30 years..Sure it's getting pretty hard these days but I'm still not on oxygen. Best tips: Ditch the cigs if you do smoke. Walk as much as possible if you can - even if it hurts. And learn to use your diaphragm..breath in to the count of 4 and out to the count of 8 [or 2 in 4 out - whatever you can manage but always double the amount in exhalation. Use that auxiliary breathing muscle and try to get into the habit of breathing into your abdomen and out with your diaphragm..] Meditate and forget the 3-5 year prognosis. Hope this helps someone. Peace.

Information well received. I've never smoked nor used "recreational drugs". I'm a lifetime bodybuilder who once weighed 312 pounds and bench pressed 540 pounds. And yet, I've been diagnosed with copd. Asthma nearly killed me as a child. During my youth and middle age I'd licked the condition. But now that I'm in my late 60s it's returned. Not a welcomed homecoming. Nevertheless I still strive to workout almost daily and at 69, with copd, I can incline bench press 415. Never give up! Never surrender!

At 16 I had asthma, bronchitis, lung spasms and a lung infection all from 2nd hand smoke. My doctor was going to call it emphysema too but I found a way to get better. Any of the drugs made me way to hyper and still sick so I just quit and got completely away from smoke, even things that remotely smelled like smoke. I started riding a bike. 5 years later, I worked up to joining a bike racing team, biking 50 to 100 miles a day, swimming 1 mile a day and walking 15 a day. I was still short of breath but constantly pushed it to the limit all day every day -never a day off! I was invited to join the US Olympic team. Knowing my lungs I refused, I had already won something much better. Going from living in an oxygen tent looking at death to scoring 68 on the lung function test. Now happily looking toward 60 and sometimes doctors tell me my lungs are normal to slight obstruction maybe! Fight every day for yourself. Clean country air, simple real food, increase heart rate and expand those lungs!

Dr Berg, I had bouts of shortness of breath as a boy. This evolved into bronchitis, later termed chronic bronchitis and by my mid twenties chronic asthmatic bronchitis. I fought the problem by running or swimming regularly. Nevertheless it worsened by the time I was in my mid thirties and then it was termed asthma. Almost hopeless I turned to Hatha Yoga and found after a year that practising 45 minutes of yoga daily let me live a near normal life.
Things again started worsening by the time I was 70 even hatha yoga supplemented by inhalers didn't permit normal breathing. In despair I consulted a specialist pulmonologist. He put me through a lung function test and the results showed that I had COPD. The doctor prescribed newer more advanced inhalers.
However I was now fed up with this constantly evolving problem. I started exploring Pranayama, specifically the type termed Anuloma - Viloma. It improved matters and I was able to stop all inhalers, my hatha yoga and concentrate on pranayama alone for fifteen minutes a day. It worked and at 76 I am able to maintain normal activity without inhalers. I am not however cycle fast or run as I quickly get breathless. But normal sedentary lifestyle including negotiating a few flights of steps is no problem

I started feeling a lot better, however, my emphysema symptoms are getting worse. I’m definitely going to exercise take the omega-3’s and change my diet. Hopefully this helps with my symptoms. Thanks for the video.👍🏻

Hi love your video. I have COPD I stopped smoking in 2006 before I was diagnosed. I after I managed to stop smoking I couldn't breath properly and I couldn't stand the smell of cigarettes . I don't know how people with COPD can smoke. When I smell smoke it starts me coughing and can't get my breath. I feel for people who know they should stop but can't, I remember what that was like. I was enabled to stop smoking by using the vapes, also giving up this habit starts in the head . You have to think about your heart snd what you are doing to it and your lungs . Try to think of those organs as your best friends and how badly you are treating them. That helped me really want to stop that awful habit.

Not these videos that last twenty minutes explaining their research or their education or their hopes and dreams of fixing someone all to tell you to take a supplement they’re selling. Just keep it simple. People want to know the answer not the 2hour video that comes to their conclusion. Thanks for you and those in your community for keeping it simple and to the point.

First off, thanks for the great work Dr. Berry.
Same story like below. I was almost a full grain fed baby, because full grain was seen as the healthiest thing, one could do,
which got me lots of digestive issues early on in my life. On top of that, with 2 years, i was a vegetarian for a year.
With the age of 4, i started to have more and more bronchitis developing, from a constant rhinitis from dust milb allergy.
There had to be lots of them, since the more than 100 year old house had lots of fungi as well, which let's them thrive and multiply.
I had mostly allergy symptoms in that specific house.
With 11 years i finally got real medicine for my asthma bronchiale, which already established at the age of 5, after attempting to treat the symptoms with
(hold onto your seats) Homeopathy (a big, corrupt and manipulative pseudo pharmacy brunch very popular in germany and austria).
They made my mother feel like, now she has a certain kind of knowledge and education.
Did not take a lot of and not very regular steroids because they really messed with my stomach after a while. I used the inhaler to open airways on average 2 - 3 times a day.
I never would have thought or dreamt of a relief from asthma, but there it was already 2 weeks into a ketogenic diet. And it goes on, only interrupted by a too long
intermittent fast of more than 2 days, which obviously put my body in too much of a stress.

(I know this is long but I just wanted to put everything I could think of here in case someone had questions.)
I got on Wellbutrin (bupropion, instant release, 150mg/2x a day) 2 months ago and I haven't smoked a cigarette in 6 weeks and 3 days and it hasn't even been a struggle. I smoked for 35 years and smoked over 2 packs a day and was smoking Marlboro Reds for this last year. I was also addicted to soda and I haven't drank any of that either. Haven't wanted to. I did 2 weeks at 200mg and that wasn't enough so one more week of 300mg and then I just quit and haven't looked back. I can find a cigarette in my house and just throw it away. The first week of side effects wasn't fun and the constant adrenaline I could do without and I can't wait to get off of it (in 3 months, longer if I need to) but to not smoke, to not NEED to smoke is so incredible that I am dealing with the side effects happily.
A lot of people have their depression and depression-based anxiety cured with Wellbutrin (sometimes in a week, sometimes in 6 weeks). It may do that for me at a lower dose but 300mg is what I need to not smoke but again, it also is a bit intense on the adrenaline. Some people can't stand the adrenaline boost and it causes anxiety that they can't bear (again, some people it cures their anxiety) but I just concluded that none of these side effects were worse than the hundreds of dollars a month I was wasting and the isolation from society and seeing my dad on oxygen 24 hours a day now with COPD. Also, the Wellbutrin does something to where I know I have anxiety, I know I don't necessarily like the way I feel, but I am ok with that lol. There is a will power there that just makes me move forward.
The insomnia can be a problem but I've used Taurine, Theanine, and Kava Kava (each separately) and they all worked (nothing really did that first week and after that nothing else worked for me except these 3 things). Good luck! (Oh I had also tried the timed release version last year and it didn't work yet for some that is the only one that works.)

      @Great Day. Hiya!
Sometimes COVID can leave you like that for awhile, we call it Long COVID. It saps your core strength and sends weird signals to your heart, like you feel you're over doing it or working too hard and lacking energy . Take it easy, this will pass in days, weeks or months - blame COVID. In the meantime, walk as much as you feel you can but never push yourself. Even go for afternoon naps, if you can, I don't like sleeping in the day. Eventually, as if by magic, you will suddenly be better from the COVID, and the long COVID too. Then you can start walking and exercising more. And, as always, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
Once Long COVID has left you, you can start exercising a bit more each day until you're walking well, then your breathing will improve. I am assuming you don't have COPD if your lung function/ spirometry test is perfect.

I smoked for 37 years. Then, 10 years ago, I quit smoking and a week later, underwent triple bypass (with NO cardiac event). A few weeks after the bypass surgery, I had a PFT and was surprised to learn that my lungs were within 2-percent of a lifelong non-smoker. I still sustained damage to my lungs that I can feel on a daily basis, but I use inhalers to keep my breathing evened out. I also go to the gym 3-4 days a week with a focus on cardio and weights. I'm pushing 70 now and most days I feel fine. For those times I get short of breath, a quick puff on an albuterol inhaler fixes it pretty quick. I just remember back to Willie Nelson, who smoked most of his life. He decided in his 60s to quit smoking and start running, and he's still touring today in his 90s. One trick I learned that helps a lot: Roll up a section of bath towel and do a forced blow into it until your lungs are empty, then blow some more. Once you start coughing, pause, take a few deep breaths, and repeat. This seems to help open the airways up without a need for inhalers.

(I'll cautiously figure out how to drink without smoking at a later date. lol) Been trying non-smoking substitutes when I have a strong craving. One that's working pretty well is a snack of pistachios and a beverage. Trying to keep it healthy, so usually a Perrier, as the fancy bottle and the fizz make it feel like a treat. Sometimes, though, I go with coffee, tea, or (don't laugh) Monster Rehab Peach Energy Tea. Pistachios are hands-on with the shells, and that seems to help. Sometimes I do some sets of hand barbells. Good luck. The first week I was actually pretending to smoke un-lit cigs as I had some left in the last pack I hope I ever buy. lol Anyway, I told myself if I can make it two weeks, I can make it a month, and then I'd be a non-smoker. I have had asthma and chronic bronchitis since a child. It gradually got less severe over the years. Haven't taken meds since a teenager. In my old age it seems to be getting worse. When I am active and eating well it all but disappears.

I smoked weed from the age of 14 to age 31, and smoked for 8 years too. I was diagnosed with COPD in 2016 and had the Lung Compacity of a 100 year old man. The day I found out I quit smoking, and stopped smoking weed. 1 month ago I had Pulmonary Function Test. The doctor said I don't have COPD, and that stopping was the best thing I could have done. Why and how was I cured? Did they repair themselves. I no longer need Spiriva, or Symbicort medications for my lungs nor an inhaler.

E-cigarettes are just as bad as tobacco, they have a highly addictive ingredient to keep you hooked. You want to stop smoking, gum, patches or anything else with nicotine isn’t going to do it. Find a way, beg borrow or sell things or whatever. But Chantix will do it, talk to your insurance. Take it for two weeks with the intent of quitting, then stop buying cigarettes. I smoked for 46 yrs, one day I decided I was going to quit. After two weeks I smoked the last one at night and woke up the next morning. I never had anxiety, anxiousness panic or anything. It’s been 3 yrs, 7 months 14 days 12hrs and 8 minutes. There’s an app called
Quit it, download it and use it.

I am 71. I had been a heavy smoker for many years. I quit in 2009. My pulmonologist has prescribed so many inhalers, all types, supplemental oxygen, & nebulizer treatments, and none of them help at all, and it’s getting worse. I was hiking a lot up until 3 years ago, when it just became too hard & scary. Any walking in my 720 sq ft condo, 2 story wipes me out too. I get exhausted & can’t breathe just from taking a shower. I also was diagnosed with lung cancer almost 6 yrs ago, but am in remission now. My scans always showed severe emphysema. I know everyone says exercise, but I’m really confused. My doctor suggested I sell my condo because of the stairs, but I can’t even walk to the kitchen from the livingroom without feeling like I’m going to die. Why did he tell me to sell my condo? As if I could.

Of oxygen and oxygen stats on 10 liters is between 87-92 sitting....if I walk it drops to the 70's. They say I have 6 months to live...what do you think?

They are going is take a slice out of me so I don't even know how long it will take me to recover. Will I get strong again or are things going down Hill from here. I stopped smokin along time ago. I just had a severe exacerbation of my COPD when a friend came in my house wearing a lot of horrible smelling cologne. I ended up in ER with a sat of 84%, panic attack and chest pain. I have found now that just about any odors like that make me instantly sick which then leads to trouble breathing... I don't know what to do about that and it's hard to tell people to NOT wear cologne and hair sprays, etc around me.... Any ideas for me there? Thanks.

I've been in the same spot as you.. My wife just doesn't get it.. I've been trying to get her to understand that anything with a perfume or a chemical odor sets me off. Laundry soap, dish soap, deodorant , foot powder , shampoo, conditioner. Incense.. And as messed up as it sounds ; perfumed toilet paper ... You're going to have to put your own safety first, if people can't understand, or just won't stop wearing it around you.. Then they are not worried about you or your well being.. Put yourself ( First), no one else is going to.👍

So there's me thinking my COPD is manageable but I really need these videos - I've been walking a lot but the cold weather has proved a challenge it's only 3°C but it still feels kinda cold and it's windy and humid. I am praying for warmer weather it's, March 1 tomorrow.

My lung function improved after taking a supplement.containing functional mushrooms for the last 4 months.I was quite surprised so I researched functional mushrooms and found that Cordyceps can actually repair lung tissue and boost your energy amongst other benefits. Reishi is another mushroom that helps breathing. I'm 71. Because I had increased energy I exercised more. My stress levels went down too. I can recommend taking functional mushrooms as a way of improving your health in many ways.
