OPENING THE GARDEN RAILROAD!! Spring 2023. Working great. Except for the huge flood...

- SPRING!! Time to get out a locomotive and see if the garden railroad still works. And inspect for damage. Well.. a mountain fell down. That's a problem. OH, and there's a HUGE FLOOD.
Step one: Leave the indoor project in the HUGE CANYON and go outside.
Step two: mow the lawn and turn on the water. After all, it's GARDEN railroading.
Step three: Rig for high water because we had over 900 inches (22 meters) of snow in the mountains and it's all melting now. Oh, and still snowing up there... No matter. the small stream just off the railroad should not be a problem. And while checking the flood walk some old narrow gauge grade.
Step four: clean up the mess where some of the mortar mountains failed. These will need to be repaired. BUT first, clean up the mess as it's blocking the tracks.
Step five: Open the inside door at the east portal of tunnel one at Schitt's Creek and remove the winter insulation.
Step Six: Open the outside dog door (guillotine door) at the west portal of tunnel one.
Step Seven. Power up the Digitrax DCC and bring out Mexicano 14. NOTE! I didn't clean the track. I have NEVER cleaned the Llagas Creek track and it's never given me any problems. It's between one and two years outside and I've never cleaned it. And it's working fine. I am going to clean it soon, but Im rethinking the whole process of track cleaning. Anyway, running just fine without cleaning.

Hi again!!!! Been mowing the lawn. For days? Or four days? Both? I loose track. NO REALLY. BOTH. Anyway I do love the landslide. Now how to keep it intact. And who else would want to preserve a landslide? We is nuts.
Wouldn’t want the mine to fly away! I could just imagine, someone coming out onto their back porch for their morning coffee, and there in the grass is a mini mine shaft!

Thank you for the recommendation of the Prospector Hotel in Ely , it was a wonderful stay and the Nevada Northern Railroad was fantastic , so glad we went. Got to meet DJ and rode the train twice, the shop tour was a great experience , thank you again and we will continue to watch your videos to get more ideas for our garden railroad.

Too bad your cement failed, there is a cement additive like white glue, but a bit different that is used to adhere new work to older cement, also you can get crack fixer in tubes for cement. The bridge is great and your mountain is coming along. Have a good day to you both.

I feel your pain with the lawn work. I don't have a railrod outside, but I do have plenty of grass. Had one weekend of 80 degree weather, and got my first cut. Then the weather turned cold and rainy for almost two weeks. Got my second cut a couple of days ago and the lawn is already looking like I never touched it!
I’m sitting here recovering after mowing about 20% of the lawn. Sigh.
I thought the erosion and "landslide" added an interesting feature and a lot of character to the railroad. Looking good!

Never boring. Yes great to be enjoying the outdoors. My hubby is currently out cutting our lawn too, which is still a bit soggy. Don’t know if you know the crazy glue and baking soda mix. It might be the solution for fixing your cracks.
We use that a lot. But not really waterproof. Big cracks can be caulked. But it’s the small ones that are the biggest problem.
Go with a EGo mower and life in the backyard will get much simpler. No matter how thick the grass let’s it just rips right through it.

I'm living vicariously through you when it comes to MRR'ing at the moment, but I'm learning a ton for my future outdoor layout...
Since doing that, I’ve never had a significant electrical issue. A couple of shorts cost buy some odd ball thing. But never loss of conductivity.
Dear Dale and Karyn, amazing to once again see the garden railroad in action. Pity that, that particular batch of cement got affected by the weather. Cool idea to use the offshoot as ballast!

Great to see a 'Run'. IMHO, #14 has a small mechanical problem, causing it to jerk. You might want to check side & piston rod clearances.
It has a lot of gear lash and going down grade it binds. Under load, up grade, even running light on level it’s okay. Down grade is a problem.
Love love love, your videos! You should look into Ego lawn mowers they are battery and much lighter than gas.... I love my Ego so much I am buying another one cause we have 2 acres to mow in Oregon. Next one is a ride along mower... looking forward to more videos TC.

Hi. Could be… but it “seems” it’s water getting in from above and into and under the mortar. I’m guessing caulking and thick cement with cloth and wire. And added color in the mortar so if it fails or the paint flakes it will look okay. And adhesive in the mix and still use gorilla glue.

There is always a prototype. The San Clemente line between Orange County and San Diego is currently closed due to a rock slide caused by all the rain this year.
I’ve been watching the cliffs there fall into the ocean. Wow.

Lots of work to be done. You will figure it out. Great idea about using the erosion for ballest. Cant wait to see the next step in fixing the garden railway outdoor side. The 2 of you make a great team.

It appears to me that your outdoor scenery is experiencing what actually causes pot holes in the street and rock falls in the mountains, a little water get into a tiny crack, expands and makes the crack bigger, etc. Solving that problem should be an interesting challenge. ;-)
Agreed. If you look close you will see some orange stains in places as I pull it loose. I sprayed orange dye on there a few months ago. Then when I pull it loose I can see where the dye ended up. There are ribbons of orange all throughout the mortar where it failed. So the waterproofing isn’t working. Because of cracks. I’m thinking of filling any gaps or obvious large cracks with caulk. And cloth and wire throughout. So if it does crack (not if but when) the cracks can’t open as easily. And as always, expect problems and keep the fix simple.

Just my opinion only but why not use pink foam board outside also you can do anything can do in concrete. Before I went battery op. here in Oregon I used the no-oxide trick on the track after the spirit clean. I'm sure you thought of all the same things. More time to run trains good job though.

I found Scotch Brite works really good it cleans but does not scratch up the rails

@@ToyManTelevision You can get the self stick round ones that is how I built one for HO some time ago used a old locomotive frame and traction motor sat a battery on it to run the motor and move the locomotive made a wood disc and glued in a hole the scrubbing motor shaft it worked ok not enough battery power for G scale you could do the same and use a 7 amp hour lead acid battery to power it with a resister to make the traction truck run slow . would I bet do well just gotta find a broken locomotive for parts
You can run DCC anywhere, although I wouldn't, but its obviously possible, I would be more prone to trying Dead Rail myself!
If I didn’t love getting locomotives.. but the cost is high no matter what. And wireless is really expensive. DCC is too. Both a process to install. But DCC is usually cheaper and easier.
Question: Is that a bridge at 14:00 into the video? It looks like the track (ties) are suspended in space without support. Suggestion use a wooden Howe Truss which can easily span that distance. Also add proper bridge abutments and wing walls. Also, recommend taking a course on concrete materials.
Yes. That will be a bridge. Not sure what type yet. Howe is plan A. Abutments are in but as of now no bridge. We are trying several different ways of doing the cement cliffs. Not following the normal rules. But I’m looking for a better way to do outdoor railroads. If it doesn’t work well it doesn’t. But so far I’m thinking it’s going to be a great way to do scenery on any outdoor railroad.

My track is currently LGB and I didn't clean it for more than two years. I do find that once it finally needed a clean, it needs a clean more often. 🤷♂️
I do love my LGB cleaning locomotive though as it makes the task super easy,... but it's not suitable for all track types.
Now.... back to killing weeds I go....
Hi!! I had one of those LGB track cleaners. Someone stole it. Sigh. But I’m planning to clean with mineral spirits and follow up with motor armature grease. I saw a video from the UK. (Go figure) that that’s the best way. But I think the idea of smooth rail is a great plan. No scratches. Few places for dirt to adhere. And conducting “grease”.
Oh and yes. It really loud. It has a Phoenix sound card. With a NiCad battery. When the battery is dead the volume control doesn’t work! So I need to run it for about 30 minutes before I can turn it down. So… just like the real thing… ear plugs.
+ToyMan *Is a proper bridge retrofit an option for the track that currently deadends at the tunnel mouth?* The San Pablo and Tulare (now kept in land-bank status by the Union Pacific) built low wooden trestles over creeks and irrigation ditches.
MIX YOUR PAINT IN YOUR CONCRETE AND IT WILL ADD STRENGTH TO YOUR SCENERY.

Was the volume of your engines sound its normal volume? Or did you amplify it for the video? My question is simply wasn’t that loud enough to bother neighbors?
Do they make trains that are rechargeable battery powered? Then you wouldn't need to be concerned with electrical connections corroding.

Hello, wondering video S always, the tracked used, is it Llagas 250 nickel right? Have you ever used is 215? The 250 is hard to get now and he doesn't seem to offer his aluminum or brass versions anymore. I am doing dead rail so really it is just a question of durability and your track looks and works great! Thanks for a great inspiring video
Yup on 250. And 215. I use the 215 inside on the logging railroad. LGB stuff hates it. The flanges hit the spikes and really bad on turnouts. That’s why I use 250 everywhere else. I talked to mike about rail. They buy wire and have it rolled into rail. But the US suppler has closed and they now need to buy in Mexico. Minimum order $20,000. So they bought nickel silver. Aluminum is extruded so totally different and readily available.
Why not go battery powered and radio control or blunami? Pretty easy to do in large scale as there is plenty of room in the tender and locomotive. I was wondering what the temperature is required for the heat gun to work on the foam board I have a 1000 degree on the hot side heat gun and I was wondering if it would work?
Gee I’m sure it will. No idea what the max temp on ours is. But pretty harm hot. Hot enough that if I hold it in one place it melts and burns the styrene. So I need to keep it moving. Anyway at low temp it does nothing. Anyway 1000° is really hot.

Speaking of railroads, where is the organization that allows one to driv and engine... for a price? Your flaking coment becomes very realistic rockfall - add color, maybe acrylic? Maybe you can dye or color the cement, spread it in thin sheets and then smash it up to make rockfall with color. Such a shame your patch of scenery went bad. In my travels across the US I not that not all rock striations are in level layers. Many of the gigantic formations are tilted and the lines of deposits are offset. owing to vertical shifting. That is a huge project, Will you make a skirt of stone or ?? to hide the pilings that support the outdoor track?
Hi. Several places let you run. The Nevada Northern is best known and while it’s expensive they are the most affordable that we know of. Steam or diesel. I think about $1200? Chumbres and Toltec does as well. Theirs is a three day process and I think about $5000? If the failed mortar were more stable I’d just color it and call that good! But as it’s still coming loose… anyway still might. And I’m just leaving it open underneath. Easy maintenance.

There is no danger of diesel-electrics are going to be phased out or prevented from running on mainline rails systems. I hope you are able to successfully resolve the cracking problems with your outside layout. It is a bit discouraging after so much diligent work. The canyon trestle is epic. Nicely done.
Hi Dale , I've been watching you channel for a while now up until this stage have never made a comment.
I strongly suggest that you never use any abrasive material EG Brite boy or abrasive track cleaning block at any time on your track, this does damage your track .
Yea I know there are some TH-cam channels that think its ok to use a Briteboy on their track ,this is complete BS and typical of misinformation that comes out.
There is one particular fan boy channel no names no pack drill you may know that channel operates on their TH-cam channel in the basement with his buddies huddle around him .
Unfortunately he recommends using this product ,and these practices are out of date and shouldn't be use "Rock n Roll".
I have been using a product called CRC 2-26 its a electrical contact spray I use on my layout in an unsealed garage which does get a lot of dust and dirt for over twenty years, this product is used in the electronic industry.
Just spray it on the wheels run the loco up and back , yes you will see some film on the track but that's ok you can wipe it off or leave it ,not to mention how much time you will save cleaning just let the loco do the work for you
When you have finished your running session just apply more again do a run around and just leave it or you can also apply spay to a paper towel on a wood block and go over the track.
I was recommend this product buy a a group of guys who where operating DCC exhibition layout and I've never looked back.
Highly recommend this product and yes it works on DCC , hope this is of some help

Looks like you got your work cut out for you this summer !!! On a more sadder note, Did you know that Malcolm Furlow passed away this March of "Long COVID" saw this news in the March issue of Model Railroader. He was the reason I got into Narrow Gauge Modeling long before I ever heard of Bob Brown and The Narrow Gauge Gazette !!! A lot of people didn't like his style of modeling but I always liked how he went against the grain and did things his own way and how he saw things, R.I.P Malcolm you'll be missed.
I hated the way he was treated by so many of the narrow gauge people. Nice guy! Good modeler for what it’s worth. But the crap he got for writing articles and putting himself out there. And that was before the internet. No clue why… some BS I guess.
