    Couldn't agree more. I feel like no matter how long we've been in the hobby, we can always learn from others. I love picking up tips from others on TH-cam. Some I just find interesting, some I actually try. This is a great "community" for those of us that don't have people in our lives that are also in the hobby. I find it really fun to be a part of this!

    I was saying these exact things in one of my lives the other day. I have some tanks that need 0 maintenance, some are more finicky, all run slightly different, and all my friends in the hobby have different methods too.

    Scotty,
    Great videos you put out man. I just recently became a subscriber of your channel. This video was really good and informative. I also decided to try again on something that happened to me a few years ago. I tried to start a AF cichlid tank as my first tank and it went horribly wrong I didn’t know what I was doing. I mixed MBUNA with peacocks and I had blood parrots also. It was a mess I added fish to rapidly and my tank ended up crashing and killing everything in it except my green severum. The tank crashed so hard that my fish got this white velvet type fungus on them and it spread quickly and wiped my tank out in a few days. I was so upset I cried and literally was going to break my tank down and never do fish again. I did some research for a few weeks and decided that I am going to keep CA SA fish. Well fast forward to now. I just started up my MBUNA tank and it is working and going really smoothly. I did my research and know what fish are really aggressive and what MBUNA look like. I have the perfect rock environment for them in my 100 gal tank. It’s a 4 ft tank but tall perfect for them.

      @@jeremymoore450 thank you for your comments I took have lost an entire tank and it was well established. I had an over head sump that broke so I replaced the container and evidently the new container was toxic it killed my entire tank over night.

    Well said Scotty, hats off to you, you have seen through the fog of fishtube, used your common sense and took action for the best possible health of your fish, regardless of populism !
    I wash all my media in tap water as well, it takes a couple hours the clorine/cloramine to have ANY effect of benifical bacteria whatsoever. Minutes after I wash my media it's straight back in the tank with fresh tank water and a dose of Prime, never have a problem, not enough time passes for one to occur.
    Great video, great channel !
    Exactly don't be affraid to try ! Don't be affraid to fail, I lost Discus for the same reasons you did, I just didn't want to give up .

    I wash my filters in tap water, not because I saw somebody say you can, but because Jason at Prime Time said limited exposure to tap water to rinse is fine, which has an effect but negligible and won't crash a cycle - and well, he's got a PhD in this stuff and knows a lot more than 99% of the people who say "I do it and it's fine" without any context or explanation. My filters get cleaner than rinsing in tank water, and I get more time between maintenance - knock on wood, no cycle crash so far.

    • @cut419ram
      @cut419ram 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I agree with this, with the exception of if the filter is new and still building a bioload on it, I suggest just don't clean it at all and let it build that bioload. Espcially if you're doing a new tank cycling. Otherwise, if the tank and filter is mature, go for it.

    • @jamesmakesvideos
      @jamesmakesvideos 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @cut419ram for sure! I don't touch a new filter for a month or two unless I see a decent loss in flow. Most of my tanks have two filters and I'll alternate which one gets cleaned each time, too.

    59yr old Grumpy Scotman.
    Who can remember when fish keeping was as Simple as having a Undergravel filter in 8ft tank(2 Filters plates 4ft) with a power head on each up lift.
    With nothing more than gravel as the filter media and the plant growth was that good some actual flowered and fish bred happily without Adding additives of any kind.
    Washing filter under tap water!! OK if you have another filter running in the tank.
    As for substrate,,
    Think of the species of fish you are keeping.
    Some actually like sand because they are sift feeders.
    I could go on but this Not water change Nonsense Needs too stop.
    Fresh water contains Minerals essential for Growth.
    Happy fish keeping.
    Sir.

    I think if you did your top offs with RO or distilled water rather than tap water the TDS wouldn’t be as high as when you tested. I’m curious if that was the problem

    • @razinfishes1918
      @razinfishes1918  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      @@brantonlightcap branton yes it was absolutely the problem. Between topping off with tap water and my tank mostly have no lids so a lot of evaporation and then all the other stuff in the water i.e. mulm fish waster bio matter all contributed to the high TDS. So I learned I better do water changes on my planted tanks. Even though my parameters are good and fish all seem very healthy

    • @DiscusNT
      @DiscusNT 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      You will never adress high TDS with any manner of topoff. You need to remove the saturated water and replace it. ❤

    • @brantonlightcap
      @brantonlightcap 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @ not saying it would but it doesn’t help. TDS unless you’re doing RO and remineralizing means nothing anyways

    There is a goofy nerdy sport called HEMA: Historical European Martial Arts. Some HEMA Tubers are elitists as well ☝️ They are not open to different techniques that actually work. They cry and complain, those are not in the treatises 😡 And that kicking doesn’t work, even wearing leg protectors 🤦 There r always elite insane TH-camrs 🤷
